You must have heard of this Quake 4 Teamfortress (http://www.enemyterritory.com/) lookalike to be out this year from ID? Here are some meaty bits from a hands on report from the CGW magazine :
* Human Classes: Field ops (fire support/machine pistol), Engineer (defense and support/shotgun, mines & traps), Soldier (duh/machine gun, LAW rocket launcher), Medic (support/ assault rifle &grenade launcher) and Ranger (sniper).
* Strogg Classes: Tank (your basic stormtrooper/Bosonic Orb gun), Oppressor (heavy weapons and lightning gun), Constructor (engineer/nail gun, EMP charges), Meditek (medic/unknown weapons) and Infiltrator (sniper/rail gun).
*Just from looking at the screens, Marines have tanks, helicopters, mobile radar, anti-air guns, mechs, fast attack hover fighters and amphibious assault vehicles. They don't talk much about the Strogg, but I assume they will have similar units. Except they ARE the vehicles. I think...
* Strogg have an anti-gravity jetpack type unit.
* id is looking to bring ET to other properties, possibly Doom.
* No plans to support bots, although there are some single player training missions.
* There's some sort of XP/ranking system similar to Battlefield 2.
* As far as tech stuff goes, they are using the Doom 3 engine. But a lot of the changes to make Quake Wars more of a multiplayer friendly experience has been done in-house over at Splash Damage. Expect 32 player games.
Looks like there could be some more interesting online battles to be fought in 2006!

a recent preview of the game available from Eurogamer. (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=62456&page=1)
And a small snippet of what megatexture actually means :
"You mentioned the MegaTexture technology there and how it's being used with the Doom 3 engine. Could you give us a few more details on that?
Paul Wedgwood: During the early part of the project we realised we wanted to be able to render these huge outdoor areas and John Carmack is undoubtedly the best graphics programmer on the planet. He proposed, and then devised, the idea for the MegaTexture, which is a single unique texture that covers the entire landscape.
It's 32,000 pixels by 32,000 pixels, it creates a six gigabyte source file which we then have to compress to ensure good disk space usage but actually only ends up using 8Mb of video memory on a video card. We took this basic implementation of the technology and then started developing it further so we had it working on a 3D mesh, we introduced a single parallel light source for lighting, the ability to put other models and things on the landscape, foliage, tools like mega-gen which generates the texture, geometric texture distribution, the road tool that lets you just plop roads down along a route."
So there, at the next social gathering you could sound like an MIT graduate by mentioning it. :p
Check some of the newer screenshots here (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/681/681220p1.html) which are really mouthwatering, specially the detail on the medic. woot!
This snippet taken from the preview (http://pc.ign.com/articles/681/681217p1.html) at IGN.COM :
"But what really makes Quake Wars interesting is the additional of deployables. Almost everybody has a function of some kind that can help the whole team. For the humans, the Field Ops and Engineer classes do most of the deploying -- things like radars, defense turrets, artillery, strategic missiles, and airstrikes. The Soldier can mount his rifle or his LAW rocket launcher on certain objects and allow other players to use them -- even players from other classes. The Ranger, a stealth/sniper class, can disable or hack into enemy deployables, and even the medic can set up supply stations."

perhaps for this game there will be proper QA testing for imbalanced classes and game exploits, and free maps once in a while too. ;)

a recent hands-on preview (http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/enemy-territory-quake-wars/684163p1.html) from Gamespy is available.
Snippet :
"With the maps in Quake Wars being so much larger than the original Enemy Territory, this raised an issue that's come up in similar games: what happens when you find yourself stuck in the middle of nowhere without a vehicle? The answer: the character calls in a vehicle drop. At the moment, the procedure is a bit comical, as a supply plane flies high overhead and drops out a vehicle sans parachute, which then comes plummeting to earth and lands with a few bounces. (You'll want to move out of the way after calling for a new vehicle.) The question of how often you'll be able to call for a new vehicle has yet to be settled; it's safe to say that no one wants jeeps falling out of the sky every 10 seconds."
This had me laughing.. imagine in BF2 you call out a tank from your commander.. lol... :D

Fantastic idea! If he missed you with the supply crate he can always whack you with an Jeep/buggy :p
It'd probably work if they limit it to things like AGV's and use ballons like the Mars rover, so it just bounces of things it hits.

When Activision, id Software and Splash Damage revealed Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars at last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, a lot of people were shocked at the concept. Here was a game built on the DOOM 3 graphics engine that not only planned to support 32 players online at a time, but planned to do so in massive outdoor environments along the lines of what's been seen in the Battlefield universe.
How is this possible using an engine built for small rooms and narrow corridors? We went to Splash Damage's Richard Jolly to sort out all the details behind the look of the upcoming game.
Sounds interesting.

As long as it's generally better than BF2, Its almost a definite from me, and I reccommend the clan delves in a little. Maybe a few people play, and write a short summary of good vs bad, it vs bf2 and a deep analysis of the price of crocs in hong kong and how it affects Mexico's ceylon Tea industry.
Then maybe we can get into it, if FiB doesn't :p

Info on some of the Strogg (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/702/702968p1.html) and GDF (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/703/703148p1.html) Classes came out.
Strogg
Tank - Heavy soldier with weapon choices of hyperblaster, assault rifle and bosonic orb. Nothing fancy here, just your high powered, heavy armorered Strogg shock trooper.
Technician - The Strogg version of a medic, able to repair allies and resupply weapons. Can also 'stroggify' fallen marines into mindless killing machines.
Constructor - Somewhat similar to the technician, although this class specializes in fixing vehicles and deploying fixed turrets. Weapon choices include nail gun and mines.
Infiltrator - This is the Strogg sniper. Its weapon of choice is of course the mightly rail gun. It's also assumed the class has a 'predator' like cloaking shield.
Oppressor - A fast moving, high damage class wielding the oh-so sexy lighting gun. Can also control fixed weapons and call in orbital attacks.
GDF
Engineer - Primary support and defense class able to construct and repair a number of doodabs including fortifactions and machinery. Weapons of choice include shotgun and mines.
Medic - Guess what? He heals ya! Honest. In a pinch though he can use an assault rifle too.
Field Ops - Not to be confused with the covert ops, he (or she, I suppose) calls in artillery or air strikes and also uses an assault rifle.
Soldier - Say hello to my little friend! The soldier goes in hot and hard with a machine gun, rocket launcher and other things that go boom.
Covert Ops - The sniper class of the GDF who skulks around with a sniper rifle and smoke grenades.
Looking sweet!
