From the BBC. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/5105198.stm)

Backers of its technology include Samsung, Dell and Apple, while Toshiba, with NEC, Microsoft and others, is pushing HD DVD.

In Hollywood, companies like Disney and 20th Century Fox have sided with Sony, while the followers of HD DVD include Universal.

Warner Bros and Viacom have said they will support both.

The first Blu-ray discs can store 25GB of high-quality data, but will eventually be able to store 50GB.

Toshiba's HD DVD will hold 30GB.

By comparison, a standard single-layer DVD holds just under 5GB of data

I wonder how much will these players cost in SA... running out of kidneys.

Backups.

The first Blu-ray discs can store 25GB of high-quality data, but will eventually be able to store 50GB.
But ... what is high quality data exactly ?
mesa confused. Digital is 1 or 0 is it not ?

@sss for Hi-Def Video.

DVDs are encoded at a resolution of about 640x480 (480p) for a standard 4:3 telly and higher for widescreen.
HD-DVD / Blu-Ray are encoded up to 1440x1080 / 1920x1080 (1080p), theres 6 times more data per frame for HiDef. These resolutions are supported by all the new Plasma and LCD tellys.
