Read the pasta right here. (http://www.ea.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/editorial.jsp?src=communityupdate_070506)
Apparently this work-in-progress adds options for the servers to run without vehicles and adds a FREE map to the game. :woot:
Has EA gone MAD? Giving us something for FREE.

SGS will not install a beta methinks.
The "Road to Jalalabad" map is sponsored by Comcast and is not provided by EA - so no ... not free from EA.
his initial phase of testing will only include a small number of servers whose focus is to ensure stability in a live environment.I'm pretty sure that SGS is not one of the initial servers.
Other servers will include the new "Road to Jalalabad" map, sponsored by Comcast, which will allow US and MEC forces to engage in a new urban warfare environment!Weeeeeeeeeeee ! Sounds like a custom built for infantry only map.

Hehe, good point toke..
'Sponsored by Comcast'... OMG... Cheap sleazy EA...
'Wake Island' - Sponsored by the hardworking original BF1942/Dice team...
:grr:
Still, more bugs can only be a good thing! (for FiB ;))

Some stuff regarding the 'Infantry Only' mode
Hi Guys,
Please review the no vehicle option details below. Hopefully this helps people understand and enjoy this feature a bit more.
No vehicles – We removed vehicles to change up the manner in which the game it played. This places more focus on how players strategize their movements and also reinforces player skill (i.e. accuracy, etc).
Damage decrease – Prolonged gunfights that allow players to make decisions under fire.
Commander without Artillery or Vehicles
Longer spawn time – The long respawn also creates an incentive to change up the manner in which the game is played. There is a greater consequence on death. We also saw the need to slow the pace of the game down somewhat in order to increase the intensity.
Longer Revive Time – This helps to compensate for the long spawn time. With 30 seconds of revive time, there is a greater chance to be revived. This is also beneficial since there is a greater need to revive players. The extra time also allows for medics to give some thought as to when to revive a player. Medics can allow dangers to pass then revive a player rather than being required to rush into danger.
Reduce health pack replenish – This is a rebalance of the medic class to prevent exploits created by the reduction in damage.
RIBs & Parachutes left in game – Some maps require water transport or parachutes to work.
TOW missile left in place

So by my (very rough and probably completely inaccurate) calculations, in my 273:21:24 hours of playtime, I have died 10834 times, and have therefore spent roughly 45 hours watching the respawn countdown screen. If the respawn time was 30 seconds, that would make it around 90 hours watching the respawn countdown.

Hello everyone! Based on player feedback and bug reporting we are moving forward with our second 1.4 Beta version. This version has additional bug fixes and the following changes to the “Road to Jalalabad” map and the “No Vehicles” server option.
Road to Jalalabad
- Tickets adjustements
- Removal of 1 US tank to help address balance issues.
No Vehicles Option
- Added a new Server Browser Filter option for No Vehicles
- Return Health to default BF2 level
- Return Medic pack and Revive values to Default BF2
- Default spawn times to Default BF2 setting.
- No Vehicles is now a ranked server option!
We kept:
- Keep the current sprint bar setting (I.e. 2x sprint)
- Keep the current Vehicle exclusion list (i.e. we are not introducing light jeeps etc, just keeping the boats on Carrier levels).
We will be working with the Battlefield server providers to have Phase 2 servers hosted. Client files will be hosted in the same locations as the first 1.4 Beta. Please note that once you download the new 1.4 Beta you must:
- Delete your previous 1.4 Beta folders
- Follow these steps to back up your 1.3 install
> Go to “C:\Program Files\EA GAMES”
> Right click the “Battlefield 2” folder and choose “Copy”
> Right click anywhere away from this folder and choose “Paste”
> Once the copy has completed, you will have two folders named “Battlefield 2” and “Copy of Battlefield 2”
> Install the patch 1.4 beta, then start the game as normal
When you wish to switch back to the release version of BF2, use the following steps:
- Go to “C:\Program Files\EA GAMES”
- Right click the “Battlefield 2” folder and choose “Rename”
- Rename the folder to something like “Battlefield 2 Beta”
- Right click the “Copy of Battlefield 2” folder
- Rename the folder the “Battlefield 2”
- Start the game as normal.
Please make sure to take the proper steps to safeguard your 1.3 BF2 install and join us in making this the best patch possible.
-The Battlefield Team.

Looks to me like they want to increase the points earned in a round once more. For us to complete the game and buy the new release. Load of crap. I dont see anything of current issues being fixed. Just a whole load of new opportunities for tons of bugs. By the time the next version is released we will be up to patch 10.9 . bloody rediculous. They keep on changing the game and every time they do it they bugger it up. Yes infantry only is cool, but do remember you will only do well in infintry only if you do well in clode compbat. you might rack up kills but you wount kill astranomical amounts of poeple unless you rule the close combat scenario.

What's really nice about all of it is the choice you get.
Some people like to swan around in tanks exploiting the engineer game mechanism. Others like to fly things. But there are some who enjoy running around shooting stuffs.
The infantry only option gives this choice to people so that they can run around without worrying that the single player who can fly is about to bomb them back into the stone-age.
Remember that they will be changing the minimums required to get a game on.
Patch 1.4 does not make the game infantry only - if gives that as an option for all maps. So perhaps the complaints/suggestions should be directed to the admins.
A comment on bugs - there are relatively few bugs in BF2. I think we have the red tag and the server crash bugs - and that's it. And both are intermittent making them harder to trap. The rest of the nonsense that happens is due to exploits on part of most (if not all) players, or the need to merge real life physics and a game environment.
Quick disclaimer on bugs - because this is a PC game and the very nature of PCs and their owners means that there are an enormously large number of 'unique' configurations of hardware and software sets. This does mean that there may be a set of 'bugs' that applies to your machine and to very few other people in the world.
I think that EA/DICE have learnt from the process every time they have released a new patch. And I am sure that there will be future patches - if to do nothing more than add new features or to bring about tighter integration between BF and SF.
BF2142 is not going to be the answer to everyones' dreams. What really appeals to a large number of people about BF2 is its contemporary setting and that people can relate to what is going on. 2142 is SciFi. You will not be able to say that humans of the future cannot leap 2m in the air (maybe they are super strong, maybe they have powered boots as standard kit). What this space 3 months from now - we'll still have smacktards whoring the powered battle suits, or whatever gets your goat.

Actually, I think alb is right - there are few-ish bugs, apart from red tag/server crash, most of it can be attributed to lag... Very often, you think you hit them in the head, but they're already behind you according to the server or something...
I don't hate patches, I just wish they'd fix more things in each one :D
