Don't go wide unless it's the screen you watch DVD's through.

maybe get 1 of each for the best of both worlds!

if you want bigger 19" wide is better, nice for movies, most games suoprt a wide screen mode i think so go for that, im sure its more expensive right ?

If you ever want a new gen console, wide is better. Then you can use it on the same wide screen!

wide is better... but be aware that BF2 will look "weird" even if you force the res on the game to run at 16:9 or 16:10.

only games with widescreen in mind work best.

but for the long run i would go for the widescreen. ;)

sss
11th July 2006, 09:09 AM
i cant see why would would actually be better... it has less pixels doesnt it?
well i plan on getting a plasma tv.. so any console stuff will go there and dvd's

You can force BF2 to run in widescreen by modifying the properties on the icon (not from within the game), 16:9 is VERY good but does take a bit of getting used to. Apparently you can also change your FoV, I haven't tried this yet.

What resolutions do the LCD's run at?

Remember when they had the BF2 launch at the Military Museum? There was a guy from BT playing on that large screen LCD or plasma. That looked cool.

Nice to know that BF2 will handle the changed in aspect ratio.

I think Wall set up his machine to handle the fun full eye candy mode and the ability to have his 1337 specs. Perhaps some of this arcane wisdom should be shared on the War Geekia?

1440x900

as far as i can remember the plasma during the BF2 launch was running @ 854x484 which is the native res of the plasma screen. still looked impressive from a distance though.

NB tried to force the 1440x900 res on his wide screen monitor but he said he still got the image stretched.

I run BF2 in 1440x900 and it seems fine to me. (One of the patches last year broke funny resolution support for me and it looked so bad that I played very little until they fixed it again.)

My BF2 icon says:
"C:\games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900

Games that do not support widescreen fortunately seems to be getting rarer.

Double negation is the sign of a pessamistic mind.
How about. Games that support widescreen seem to be getting popular.

The widespread availability and popularity of Widescreens will mean that more games will support widescreen resultions.

I do not think there is much difference between analog and DVI. Both work pretty much the same. Except for TG's, which is obviously DVI (aka digital). :D

one advantage i notice from having a monitor with both inputs is that i can connect more than one device to it.

my PC uses the DVI and the X360 the analogue whenever i am kicked out of the living room. :p

Try www.widescreengamingforum.com and search for BF2 it will tell u how to set up for 16:9.

I've got BF2 running at 1900x1200 with only slight stretching on the hud (minimap is slightly oval), the landscape is shown correctly, had to turn some of the detail down so my graphics card didn't yelp too much.

well i just got my 19" Widescreen Mecer LCD and i have to admit its a heck of a difference in games that support it, Titan Quest, Ground Control 2, UT2004, GRAW and even the Darkstar One demo have native WS support which just looks great!

and thats not even counting that i can play with my X360 full screen too!

i got myself the Mecer TW999 which has 5ms response time, digital and anagolue inputs, 1440x900 resolution and integrated speakers. Good deal i would say for almost the same price i got my old 4:3 19" LCD! :sharp:

sss

ok.. so its either gonna be 19" wide.. or 50" wide!!!

just can't make up my mind to do such an irrational thing!

On the dropdown list of graphics modes, I do not get 1440x900, the best I get is 1280x800. That is despite my desktop running at 1440x900. I am on the latest patch with the bonuspack and everything.

It is a laptop, so maybe my graphics driver is not informing UT that 1440x900 is possible.

Ruslan74

Please. How do you run UT2004 in 1440x900 resolution?

here you go! :)

You may find that you can select your resolution and adjust the FOV to your preference (up to 100) via the ingame menu. If your desired resolution is not available, or if you want an FOV above 100 (recommended for 16:9 displays), keep reading. Otherwise, you can skip this section.

Go to <gameDir>\system. Open ut2004.ini. Find these lines:

FullscreenViewportX=xxxx
FullscreenViewportY=xxx

Change them to set your resolution.

Now open user.ini. Find these lines:

DesiredFOV=90.000000
DefaultFOV=90.000000

Change the values to set your FOV to your preference. I recommend 100 for 16:10 displays, and 105 for 16:9 displays. Unlike UT2003, the game will not revert high FOV values back to 100.

It works like a charm and actually gives you a slight edge coz you can see more in the sides. ;)

@gkm - you are welcome. :)

@SSS - is the 50" plasma REALLY HD? 1024x768 aint really a 16:9 resolution.

sss
20th July 2006, 01:02 PM
i know.. its an odd one... but its a lot more pixels that the standard ones!

my 7900gt came with this cable thats got 3 rca connectors.. red/green/blue plugs!

Ruslan74
20th July 2006, 01:20 PM
@SSS - yes, thats to connect your GFX card to a HD set. Why dont you go for a LCD TV? They mostly start off with the basic 720p HD standard which is more than adequate and not as pricey as the 50" plasmas?

sss
20th July 2006, 01:34 PM
fortunately the plasma has all the stuff i want... the res.. the 3 yr warranty.. the d sub and hdmi connectors .. the "natural" plasma look.

the lcd's are much smaller.. they have the res.. but most of them so far have cons that i've seen in the display... and the 1 yr warranty is poo aswell!

i would rather go lcd... but there isn't a good one i have seen yet!

Ruslan74
20th July 2006, 03:13 PM
i see, so what the plasma does it down-scales a HD source into the native plasma res then. not too shabby but not true HD, just a software gimmick.

but heck, who can go wrong with a 50" screen! :D

just be wary of your cats scratching it when they see some big rodens on discovery channel. :p
