an interesting article on the whole shebang can be found here. (http://www.techspot.com/articles/blu-ray_vs_hddvd/)

Snippet :

"Blu-ray Disc (BD) is one of the next-generation optical disc formats currently being proposed. It is designed for high-definition video and high-density data storage. The technology was developed by a group of companies working under the name Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). The main supporter of this technology is Sony. As you can tell by now, the main competitor to Blu-ray technology is HD DVD, which is backed chiefly by Toshiba.

HD DVD has been recognized as the only format of approved next-generation technology by the DVD Forum, which is a group of 230 companies who develop and define DVD formats. Members of this forum include every big name in music, movies and the computer industries, while Toshiba is the organization maintaining the forum. The vote to name HD DVD as the successor of DVD technology was 8 to 6, and many of the companies within the forum are backing Blu-ray technology.

Smells like a Betamax story waiting to emerge....

Did you notice that last line about the thinner layer needed on the disc to reduce refraction. I will kindly interpret this for you.

If you scratched the disc your BF2 game came on you will get away with it.

If you scratch the Blue Ray disc your BF3 will ship on you will be screwed. It will not read in the drive and EA till want the price equivalent of a new game to send a replacement disk.

A scratch is currently defined by the marks your cat left on the disk as it launched itself from desk after you threw your BF2 box at it, oh BTW your box also clobbered the disk.

In the future a scratch will be the almost invisible marks that your finger left on the disk after you tried to remove the dog hair from(you finally got the cat) from the disk surface. :D

I think I'll wait.

I remember the beating a record could take before it was unplayabe.
I also remember leaving my mon's abba record in the sun and the resulting pounding from that simple little mistake.
Aaaah ... the good times :p!
