I think I'll be holding off on 2142 for now . . .

Woah !! That doesn't look good ! :(

Will hopefully be able to find a way to bypass it .... if it's true ..

One will have to skip a lot of games in the future. This is just the beginning.

Sometimes I think that flooding theses spyware guys with information is better than trying to protect yourself. Because an overload of information will make the system ineffective, as they are never able to process it all.

as they are never able to process it all ... me 's at google ...
Somebody said the same thing about google's ability to index the internet.

This is definately not playing the ball game. Release the game for free if you're going to shove adverts down our throats.

I was tentatively planning to order it but definitely not now. Not unless they pull this, it absurd.

Who says Google can process it all?

This is confirmed by the Gamespot review: (www.gamespot.com)
"On a peculiar note, even though the world is ending in 2142, it appears that advertising will still be around. Battlefield 2142 features in-game ads, though we didn't get to see them firsthand during our testing. Still, there is a printed disclaimer that comes with the game telling you that Battlefield 2142 will analyze certain "advertising data" on your machine to determine what ads to display to you. Ironically, EA says that if you don't want your data shared with its advertising partner then "do not install or play the software on any platform that is used to connect to the Internet." But that would pretty much defeat the purpose of playing Battlefield 2142, wouldn't it? Of course, you could always play single-player against the artificial intelligence, though the AI won't be mistaken for human opponents any time soon, and the single-player is still limited to 16-player maps. Still, this is an example of things to come, as we begin to see dynamic in-game ads appear in more and more games."

I am not happy about this. Some days I wonder why I buy EA games. Sigh.

It shouldn't be too long before an enterprising individual figures out how to block it or strip it from the game.

This kind of thing really pisses me off :grr:

@TG: I HOPE they come up with that soon...

I mean if you can mod games, I'm sure people playing around with that kinda stuff will be able to stop em..

I really hope so coz this is KAK...

Punkbuster might throw a spanner in the works of attempts to divert this traffic.

Start DOS attacks on the recieving address.

gus

Can probably black hole the receiving address in my router.

stoke
17th October 2006, 02:24 PM
That's not the point. EA must be taught a lesson. I am prepared to waste all of this company's bandwidth on weekends to DOS the report-back server EA is using for this.

gus
17th October 2006, 03:42 PM
Might be worth recording the packet with ethereal, edit them a bit to make them more "interesting" and then send that all weekend. :D

I hope the people is the USA complain to the FCC and FTC about this, even through that would probably not help as well.

stoke
17th October 2006, 03:46 PM
Yea .. i'll snipe the packet through a port forwarder and then write a little app to send more interesting data direct from a gay porn site.

Kewl idea !

SaintMg

Deinal of Service attack.

To implement, you make a cute little program that you give to peeps freely.
This cute little program does one thing, it connects to a server, and transmits data to a port.

Now .. if enough peeps run this, or you have the kind of connection that can run this multiple times, the server recieving the data is unable to actually recieve real data, cos it is being bombarded with carp.

Sometimes the server even falls over.

The server is being denied of being able to provide a service.
It has been attacked using the Denial of Service attack.

and so what if there is adware, priavcey is overrated, you should have nothing to hind firstly.

sencondly WOOP WOOOP advertising is unavoidable, there will always be advertising in the world, and personllay i like advertising that targets only me, because god help me it gives me a usefull idea or somthing.

i dont see you guys bitching about the fact people drink coke OR pepsi in movies, or that bilboards can be ugly (which they are)

bla bla bla, sorry but i have no issue with spyware, ect the only problem i have is

not knowing when its running, and also it using up bandwidth.

if i had a 10mbit line, i would not care about spyware

the msn spyware is not that bad, i get BMW tabs in my messanger because they figured i drive one, its better than getting alot more useless shit...

FeralBanana
17th October 2006, 08:55 PM

Actually, Alluv... I also have BMW tabs in msngr... And I don't drive

..

(and now for the punchline)

...

A BMW - Mercs are so much better. :p

(jk folks ;))

But also about what you were saying... I don't think that those sort of things are bad - as you said, if you've got nothing to hide.

Except for three things:
1) Bandwith (3 Gig Cap FFS!!)
2) When they go beyond looking at your [-]pr0n[/-] uhh, 'personal' files, and actually take note of bank details or whatevr.. (if that's possible :p)
42) Is irritating (IE, when it constantly pops up with a message "LooK! We're taking note of your files and irritating you!! Yay! We're EA!!")

Well, I have just opened the box and have found no paper saying any of the stuff mentioned in the article. There is no mention of this in the manual either?

Thankies TG!

So there's no spyware, just EA wasting more of your bandwidth. Good to know! :D
