View Full Version : The History of Nicks

Flangenimblick
12th November 2006, 10:13 AM
Here you can put down the history of nicks you have used for games you have played and explain the reason (if there is any) behind said nick: i.e.

>> Sgt. Spiffy - My very first gaming nick, used for games such as StarCraft, Quake 1+2, Duke Nukem 3D and Wolfenstein 3D. :blowaway:
> Reason: Not realy sure, but I think it was a combination of tributes to my two fav movies at the time (GI Joe {my fav character Sgt. Slaughter} and Major Payne)

>> Psycho - A short-lived Quake 2 nick, only used when I went insane with the grenade launcher... :yipes:
> Reason: see above you noob!

>> shaka_za - Obviously nicked from Shaka Zulu wit ZA thrown in.
> Reason: A last resort nick used in frustration with Gamespy after I couldn't find a good "Munchies" ver...I still use it actually. :badnana:

>> Blue_Flame: Used in Gamespy for same reason as above.
> Reason: It sounded cool

>> Munchies - Ah..Munchies...a fine name...used for most of my games...a name feared by 13 year olds everywhere...*evil laughter*
> Reason: A had a slight obsession with weed at one point (I have never and will never smoke it), it was the whole concept that a plant could cause so much controversy all over the world that fascinated me. I am still enthralled by that subject but now when ppl ask me "Why Munchies?", I usually refer them to my love of food and snacks! lol :sharp:

I know there are others I've used, and I will add them as I remember them. For now, however, I think it would be interesting to see the bizarre (and not so bizarre) reasons behind some of the War Geeks nicks!

Lets see. in my BC years "school" i called myself Warlock.
REASON: Because i was a nob, i wore black and i thought it was cool.

I went with Scyth for a while, seeing as it was phenetyically (MY spelling sux) similar to my own name. (Starcraft)

Called myself Sojourner for the last couple of years. (any and everygame i played)

Finally i have settled on Nehsher It means Eagle or A Large Raptor/vulture. But metaphorically it refers also to a prophet (one of those fire from heaven kind :) ) Started using it in guildwars.

Ive got some!
In order of first to last:
first time i played online: Cameon
Reason: typo of my name
Camm
Reason: another name redo, it also didnt last long
3Y3W17N355
Reason: ill edit this post as soon as i remember...
Shortlittleman
Reason: my main account wasnt working at that time (thanks again tg for the help), im short (and proud of it, short people FTW) and midjetman was taken

Onyx
13th November 2006, 11:18 AM
I've been using TRINITY for ages.
REASON: loved The Matrix movies....
but...
made this one: ONYX
REASON: 'O' is the first letter of my real name and an onyx is a "multi-layered semi-precious stone" which probably describes me quite well.

Gaming Nicks I've used:

Maverick - my first online gaming nick, I used it in UT2003/2004.
Cmdr.A.Slavik - After the C&C character. Only for LAN games.
rainynight65 - after a song from my fav group, and very unique - it is never taken :D

Drusky

Mine is pretty self-explanatory! :woot:

FeralBanana

Back in the D...

Kirtar (or commander Kirtar etc etc etc variations on a theme): From Magic: The Gathering and thought it sounded cool...

Then FruityBanana: Have no idea where it came from, but I like the redundant tautology :p

That then became FeralBanana because I thought it sounded funnier and became a weird form of contradiction etc...

I've also used Harbinger_Of_Cheese, but I have no idea why or where it came from

At LANS it changes frequently (from my schools teachers: KENNY!!!!! to other odd things "Likeable Lemur" ;))

Err.. Don't think I use anything else, but when Feral's taken I sometimes use RabidSatsuma (like with my email address) though thats usually because i signed up previously and just couldnt remember my password ;)

Albereth
13th November 2006, 03:58 PM
Many moons ago I had 'Babes' as my nick. I think it was in one of those early helicopter games set in Viet Nam. It was never online but I think that the whole Top Gun thing had had an influence - so it was cool to have a nick even if only you saw it. The reason for that name was, well you know when you ask someone to help you choose and that's what they come up with? Well, I thought it was cool to be called babes by a hottie who wasn't my girlfriend and who I probably ought to have asked out a bit more seriously than I ever did but I digress.

Other than that it has only been Albereth - and that hails from the 80's. Meaning behind it? None really. I had created a bunch of characters for an AD&D tournament, one of whom was called Albereth. Needed a nick at some stage and hadn't needed to think too hard.

Scarlock
13th November 2006, 05:02 PM
Weeeell, my first nick was Orion.
It was a "oh sh1t, what do I call myself" nick when I first started playing DM Quake and Warcraft 2 on LAN, back in the mid 90's

I then started mudding on Mortal Realms, and chose "Scarlock" after the legendary wood elf champion of the Athel Loren - Warhammer fantasy tabletop style.
(I am now a 10x re-incarnate on the mortal realms breakaway mud, Storms of Time... 2000 hours logged in just one year:eek: )

Aparently, the only real world referance to "Scarlock" is a bright red day lilly cultivar.... go figure :p

JAWS_Firefox
13th November 2006, 05:16 PM
Firefox. Has always been Firefox. I had to add the Jaws_ prefix because Firefox had already been registered when I started playing BF2.

Jaws (Johannesburg Area Wargames Society) hails from the days when we did a lot of AD&D and figure wargaming: Ancients, Renaisance and Napoleonics, mainly.

Firefox started when CB radios just came out in SA. (TenFour, good buddy - sheez, how corny that sounds now  ) I was in high school with NO income but some friends had them and I spoke on them a few times. I needed a nick and had just read Firefox (by Allistair McLean??) which later became a movie with Clint Eastwood.

1st: Joker - Self-explanatory. Maybe not, should be but then I digress.
2nd: Kickboy - Going through tough time marriage-wise and then separation. Also self-explanatory.
Now: Shamus9717 - Shamus is from my Irish heritage and close to real name. 9717 - part of my first CNE PiD. Couldn't come up with anything more scrote than that when Shamus had already been grabbed on BF2.

lol close to mine.

Alluvium, is basically mud, but any of you with some geographical smarts.

will know that it is the mud on the side of river banks, which contain little shinny diamonds. Sooooooo my name summed up

it sound strange and cool and (at least i think pretty stylish) - much like me
but it means mud, so its really somthing crazy under it all... much like me
its Latin, and i can speak teh Latin.
um and you find diamonds in alluvium if you look for them ie im crazy strange and full of [-]Chocolate[/-] all manner of odd shiny things(mainly loose change that i eat but yeah)

and so far it is the most unique nick ever, there is never anyone registered anywhere withthis nick, it is MINE... if you on a website and there is an Alluvium... it is me :D

um yeah i think i put way too much thought into it.

Mairiiv
14th November 2006, 03:09 PM
Myne started with Pheonix the Nightmare Prince or any combination of that depending on what could be managed by the gameand then it happened, I started running into my name, on other user(how dare they).

I tryed a couple of other nicks not one lasting long before I came accross it being used and I needed to use/get another.

That is when I said enough....and I thought up a name that would be unique, Mairiiv, the meaning I havn't really though about it even though I've been asked a couple of times(maybe should really put some thought into it). It's a name that came from the same place you would get a lot of the names from Fantasy Books/Games...That Gray Matter up there ^^^. I've consequently thanks to GW needed to think up a couple of nicks, none of which has any real meaning and probably won't stick longer than that character's game lifetime.....

Edit: Btw. Mairiiv has been going for 10+ years without another Mairiiv....

MrVoorhees

I've had 3 main nicks over the years:

creepynerd: Basically came up with this while thinking: "How about a nick that describes myself?" and came up with this completely obvious answer.

Major Payne: Started using this when I decided to play as disruptively as i could just to annoy Munchies at LANs and the Internet Cafe. Stopped using it when I found out theres a movie by the same name.

MrVoorhees: Decided to use this because of my love of cheesy slasher films. (Freddy vs. Jason rocked, no matter what anyone says!) Also because of my affinity for bladed weapons (I collect swords and related stabby devices) and my penchant for using a knife whenever one is available ingame. Just ask Munchies!

SuperBlinky
22nd November 2006, 02:43 PM
I've always liked the Nickname Killian DarkWater (After a character in Fallout 1, still the best RPG series EVER!) - and i still use it on the various RPGs i still play, or variations on my own name, depending on the genre of the RPG (or game, not just RPGs)

I use Senor Blinky probably because i'm a huge scrubs fan... In one episode of scrubs, Carla's brother 'Marco' was playing pacman and uttered the phrase, "Ah, Senor Blinky!" I guess the way he sid it and the context was just extremely funny - like i try to be.

When studying I went as Quixilver, or Quix for short for LAN games. Remember Descent? :hooray:

I used to also play MUD games (Serious fun text-based RPGs) using the nick Vortex (The stormtwister), and when I joined the demo group 'Atomic Warlocks' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demogroup) as a coder I went with it as my handle.

Other random names I've used over time:
Valor Woodlaw
Mason Stonehenge (Explains my Skype address)
(Female characters)
Magica
Vortexia :D

 A few years ago quite a few years ago my brother and his friend use to send me around to do all there work and stuff "yeah i was a slave". Then one day they watched a movie called "Black circle boys" One of the guys in the movie was like me and they called him "fairy". They started calling me fairy. Then to there surprise the now called fairy grew up and got bigger now they could't use me as a slave no more so they said i grew up now i'm not fairy anymore I'm "die veer" In english "the veer" it actually escalated to "fear" but for a handle i'll just use veer. its nice and easy. lol
