View Full Version : Motion sickness...

Ummmm, a bit of weird question but........

I love FPS, but can never play the darn things because I suffer from intense motion sickness after about 10 minutes of play time....
I battled my way through 10 gruelling hours of Half Life 2.... loving every second, but boy did it take its toll, I was zonked for the next 24 hours in a horrible way.

Strangely enough Counter Strike was more bearable but still got to my poor tummy.... Doom 3 killed me and anything else I've tried has been hell.

Soooo, I'm dead keen to try Battlefield 2142... but is it only FP view only... or perhaps their is another playable view....

Maybe someone has a cure for my infected ass??

Thats sucks but I know exactly what you mean. Aliens v Predators made me feel weird. BF2 doesnt but 2142 does if I play too long, especially on the Titan.

Yeah, AvP had me feeling nasty as well. :p

I believe that fiddling with your lighting can help -- like try putting a light source behind your monitor.

Google it, you might get some pointers.

TIP: Sit still ... peeps who move and duck and dive while playing have a tendancy to get sick.

lol, good tip, but the prob is.... a virtual explosion causes a virtual shockwave which cause the virtual tree/building/fellow team mate to explode on impact... a few of those and I'm gagging

Do you make sure you only play in bright light like TG says. And trying to sit further away from the monitor apparently also helps sometimes. But if you get sick within 10 minutes, not sure anything will help enough except motion sickness tablets, which is a bit extreme solution.

low frames per second can make u feel manky, well atleast it dosn't help :p
[stoke edit : ooooooooooh ... forgot about that one .. up the FPS to at least 80 Mhz .. try for 100 or 120 .. it realllllllly makes a huge difference - franks scoobie]
[darnit edit: Umm ok that would either be FPS for the framerate OR Hz for the monitor refresh rate. Most monitors will smooth out the flickering at 75hz :)]

my friend get rid of it by .....while playing, focus on the center, eyes don't try to move around to often, of course, he can't stay in that way for too long, that's why, he trained himself, he play ... feel dizzy ... vomit ... and play again dizzy then vomit ..... but surprisingly ... he now can play FPS game.
----------------------------
Errrrr no thanks...

This disorder is called vertigo.

You'll need to see a doctor to get it fixed. Alternatively, stop playing FPS games. A friend of mine stays away from FPS.
----------------------------
I'll look for a second opinion

i have this issue...

i dont feel anything when playing doom3, quake4, FEAR etc

but when play HL2...i will very pening and feel wan vomit.. esp the buggy car drive... that time i threw up :(
---------------------------
 I feel his pain.

--------------------------
When Jedi Knight II was released and I saw my brother playing it with the cool fan mods e.g. double sided light saber by Death Maul, Boba Fett etc. there was no way I was going to miss it.

So, I started playing that game everytime before I go to bed in block/sessions of 15 mins. I felt dizzy at first but eventually within 2 weeks I was playing like 1 hours sessions! Of course, there was no vomiting at all and initially, it was going to feel rather uncomfortable for the 1st few nights.

Try it and see if it works for you ... I just don't think you'll need any form of medication for this conditions.

---------------------------
I'll think I'll try this one...

I might try motion sickness tablets as a temporary cure, and hopefuly in time I'll get accustomed to it..... I hope discovery health accept my remittance claim!

Wow, I never thought of this being a serious problem with FPS games

I know that drinking a glucose rich drink before going to sea helps me. Energade is what I use but I suppose any sugar rich drink will help.

You do get sea sickness bands, that are elasticated wrist bands that have half a marble built in. You place the marble to put slight pressure on that little bump in the middle of your wrist on the underside. Its a pressure point, and reduces or removes motion sickness. Otherwise as stated before, up the refresh rate, add light, move monitor away slightly so that you can always see the "frame" of the wall behind to stabalize your vision, and dont fly the jets :D

I think the option of 15 minute sessions sounds best.

When I first started diving, I was seasick virtually every boat trip out. I then started using seasick tablets every day for the next 6-7 diving trips. That helped until I got my "sea-legs". For the last 6 years I've only gotten queazy when the sea is really rough i.e. 2-3m between wave troughs and crests.

Another suggestion insofar as the game is concerned...
I have a gamer's mouse and, when in armour, alter the DPI setting so the turret swings around faster. However, when I get out of the armour, I have to set it to a slower rate otherwise I also get queazy. Things just swing around too quickly. So maybe during the first few weeks, set your mouse to the worst setting possible. Yes, it will frustarte you because you can't swing around so quickly but that might be the price to pay initially.

Beside, it does give us a better chance of sneaking up from behind and knifing you...:p

To take some advice from the divers ... when you are in the boat, keep your eye on the horizon (it gives you a reference point to balance) and try not to smell the engine fumes ... so for BF2 ... keep your eyes on the the edge of your screen and dont smell the claymores :)

But.. but.. I need me expert explosive badge!

Smell my clays! :p

Anyways sorry to hear that but I'm afraid I'm not too sure about how to help. Except there's that one hint in the EA hint thing while the game's loading that says "If you experience motion sickness during gameplay, turn 'camera shake' off in options menu". That might help.

Then again, knowing EA, it probably won't. :p

My wife has the same problem (unfortunately). Best tip I can give to ensure the monitor is refreshing at 100Hz or more, and try to get your frame rate up there too ...

A buddy of mine was a UT2K4 addict, he suffered from the same thingy; started vomitting and walking into walls and stuff after a 2 hour session.

He got hold of sea sick pills and he is curred now

Brent

he, he I think I'll try shock therapy, I'll be at the coast in December..... so 1 * fishing boat.... my notebook... might even get to see some sharks.... all that chum!

Hmmm, but honestly.... I'm leaning towards "sea sick pills"... correct lighting, refresh rate... My domestic worker uses a petrol lawn mower so I'll give him a stern warning about potential petrol fumes..... I will never adjust my mouse settings... NEVER!:P.... I've just realized 15 minute sessions are impossible, I'm still addicted to purity baby food... so logical self restraint is not my strong point..... Lol, I guess you'll all hear exactly how I'm doing on TS....
ta for all the tips! I'm going in asap!

Seriaaaas ... I hope your friend's family is fine after the curring event? It is not nice when someone is curred :) and it is such a dangerous event, especially when mixed with BF2 :D

I know someone that had this problem, he bought a better graphics card and put a lamp shining behind the monitor. He now plays as much as he wants with NO motion sickness.

Except now that he doesn't get sick he plays too much and gets bad eye problems :(

in battle field their is an option to turn camera shake off in the options menu some where, that will help your motion sickness alot.

I'm playing on a Legend 7600GT PCIE, no expert on gfx but hell there are alot of new effects i've neva seen before. Very impressed and no issues so far. But like sss says it does actually make the game a lil harder cos you start reacting to reflections and shadows as well. Seeing the shadow of the chopper as u rotate == AWESOME.
