View Full Version : Mice for Gaming

My current K/B & mouse setup is a Microsoft Optical Wireless Desktop 2.0 kit.

Is it possible that wireless mice in general are not so great for playing games, and in particular BF2?

I sometimes find that the response from the mouse is laggy - hence I get shot a lot. Maybe I'm just blaming my tools..... you know the saying.....

Any suggestions for what mouse to use if the one I have is no good?

i've been using the Logitech MX1000 for over a year now and have no issues in FPS or any other games whatsoever, yet this mouse has double the bandwidth of regular wireless mice so maybe thats a difference.

if you go with a normal cord-enabled mouse choose the MX518 from Logitech though, many players swear by its accuracy. ;)

i personaly had and used a wireless mouse for a while and near the end i HATED it SOOOO much it was the most useless thing ever!!

soooo i decided to get a new one for christmas i was at first looking to buy a g5 but then i found razer and saw the copperhead and visually i fell in love with it. I got it and now performance wise ive falen in love with it! and thank god its not wireless... ive made a oath to my self that i will never use a wireless mouse again! as i found that thier performance just leaves a lot to be desired! if ur gonna get a new mouse i suggest a mx518 as they arnt too expensive and everyone ive heard from swears by them! the reason i didnt get one is because i dont like having a mouse that my hand fits exactly on so i have to put my WHOLE hand on it and with my copperhead its quite weirdly shaped and at first uncomfortable so i dont put my whole hand on it and its much smaller than the new range of logitech mice so i like it and now i wouldnt want any other mouse but thats me.

so basicly i suggest you get the mx518 unless u dont really use the side buttons and have some more money to go for the g5 but basicly mireless mice suck and the mx518 rules!

I had a wireless setup. Sold it. Mouse is WAY too heavy. My right arm was getting more developed than the left.

Logitech G5. Uber Mouse. If mice ran a mob, this would be the Don.
Teflon feet, Weight Adjustable (cartridge system), Dual Laser tracking, On the Fly DPI adjustment (Good to speed up Tank turret swivel). Nice rubbery texture. Picked it up for 500 bucks from Rectron. (think it goes for about 750 at incredible corruption)

And if you are in the spending mood, pick yourself up a Logitech G15 keyboard. Backlit keys, LCD screen (totally programable), 54 pre programable key hot key (18X3 modes). Extra USB goodies on the top. Cable routing...blah, blah, blah.. it is damm good

firstly ... G5 allll the way .. !!!!

now that i got that out the way.. my friends have mx1000 and i find them laggy in windows... i think that is cause i have got a G5, the non stick pads on the bottom, and the adjustable weight option in the mouse, not to mention the in game mouse sensitivity cahnges make it a grrrreat mouse...

i can play on normal sens. then hope in a tank, and all i do is press the sens up button, and bang, easier tank turret control.

the G7 i would go for if you want wireless but thats like a grand,

and in closing

G5... G5 ...G5

G5 is weight adjustable.
G5 = Good.

But the Laser Engines are the same, so other than the corded vs. cordless deal it is pretty much the same mouse.

Where is that at? Is cheaper than any price I can get. Closest is R555 ex vat for g5

EDIT: The logitech corded mice come with a decent length of cord so there the biggest problem is solved namely cord drag.

Hey man, what the F.... What do you need a PC for, it looks like it's built into your keyboard

Other than the programmable keys (can you use them in BF2???) what do you use the screen for?

Sounds like a Laser mouse is definitely the way to go....

Logitec by consensus. G5 most popular, & has all the bells & whistles.

Honey, I've dropped the mouse...... & it looks like it's not working properly.....

Nerdboy: dunno, I just never warmed up to their stuff. The keyboards I used were horrible, and their mice are not friendly to my hands. I have always preferred Microsoft hardware in terms of mouse and keyboard, still using two Microsoft mice here (although the one starts giving up, and I don't know yet what to replace it with)...

And of course the Logi joysticks I had in the past were just plain shit. Saitek Cyborg ftw!

Oh NerdBoy, to answer your question.

The G15 has back lit keys....looks a bit like a prop out of a Tron movie at night. It also has a switch on it that disable the windows keys which is quite nice. Media controls, hot keys, macro recording, USB ports, cable routing (I am sure I have typed all this before) And the LCD screen, which has a few base plugins (CPU, clock, etc). But the real power comes in getting a little third party app (Called LCD something.. will update) it has plenty plugins to report anything from web images, network traffic, hdd space, you name it. And all you do is simply drag and drop onto the canvas. There is a whole forum thing going as well so guys are constantly writing new screens, etc.

I am pretty happy with it. At the mo mine had a 5 second cycle between Clock/Email, CPU Activity/RAM and my battlefield stats. Busy working on my MSN stream at the moment.

Bass

NerdBoyZa
10th February 2006, 08:55 AM
Thanks for all the input guys....

One problem I have with my MS Wireless, is that the scroll wheel is smooth, i.e. it doesn't have that "clicky" effect when you use it, with the result that when I'm changing weapons, I'm usually trying to pick the AT, and end up with a knife.... cos it scolled past the rocket launcher, which does not bode well for my health. Am I just being silly, in using the scroll for that? I find that I'm a bit stupid, and in the heat of battle I can't remember the number shortcuts anyway.

Ruslan74
10th February 2006, 09:05 AM
you can set the type of scroll speed under windows, dunno if it will affect the ingame speed though... i use keyboard keys but during a firefight the knife seems to pop up everytime when facing a DAO12 equiped enemy... go figure.

NerdBoyZa
10th February 2006, 09:11 AM
I know EXACTLY what you mean.

rainy
10th February 2006, 09:38 AM
Nerdboy, I mostly use the scroll wheel, but then again, mine got the clickies in - one click, one weapon. That's what I didn't like about the newer MS mice, the smooth wheel. Do you have one of those where the wheel also tilts? I'm really glad they lost that stuff on the new Laser Mouse, which has a normal clickwheel...

As for the shortcuts, it's actually easy. 1 is knife, 2 is pistol, 3 is rifle, 4 is explosives (grenades, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, I think it's also the defib for medic, but not sure), 5 is your specialty (c4, claymores, AT mines, resupply bag, medic bag...)... Correct me if I was wrong with any of this.

NerdBoyZa
10th February 2006, 10:27 AM
ROFL. Stoke that pretty much describes it.

Speaking of mapping keys, have any of you battled to remap some keys in BF2? I've had it where I was trying to map my crouch to 'left shift', as my PC has a Multiview box on it (multiple PCs - one K/b & mouse, in case anyone didn't know) and the 'left CTL' activates the menu. Nothing like pressing CTL to crouch, activating the Multiview menu, and watching yourself getting mowed down by some oke who thinks it's christmas, whilst you frantically try get rid of the menu by pressing 'ESC', except that you press 'ESC' one too many times and you end up on the BF2 Menu. To cut a long story short, by the time you're back, you're way DEAD.

Anyway, back to the key mapping thing.... It kept telling me keys were mapped elsewhere like under 'Sea Craft' or some such. When you go to that craft, there is no such key mapped....

Very frustrating, to the point that I've left the keys on their default settings.

/me wonders if the mouse wheel change could be mastered..hmmm
Sometimes I wonder about the stuff some guys can do. I wonder if its possible that some peeps are writing programs that allow multiple actions from one keystroke. i.e That guy that comes around the corner jumps up, lies down, rolls around, whips out his knife and stabs you to death in the foot. All the while you are just busy trying to just press the fusking 3 button or find 'R' to reload...
.... then of course I've heard about the Zboard that has mapable keys....

rainy
12th February 2006, 08:56 AM
Those gaming keyboards border on cheating... Or at least a slightly unfair advantage against those who don't have the money to spend on spiffy hardware. But then again, I guess the same goes for any mouse with more than 3 buttons and 200dpi :D

Bass
12th February 2006, 05:26 PM
Hmmm - I was also wondering about that - the ZBoard doesn't have a macro function like it sounds like the Logitech one does. It would certainly make it much "easier" if one could map a key will set off a sequence - something like run, jump, roll left, jump, roll right etc... until another key was pressed. All one would have to do then is aim and shoot while the sequence runs ...

Not sure of how fair that makes it though ... ?

SlappY
12th February 2006, 05:34 PM
Umm... you can. The G15 even has game profiles that you can then build macros off. Or you can record them on the fly. There is also an option to keep the time delays between the keys, or just execute them one after the next. But the macro functions are aimed more at the RPG genre.

NerdBoyZa

Well I remapped my '3' button function to the one side button of my mouse and the '1' button to the button directly behind it. Sooo just by shifting the thumb I can switch main weapon to knife and back. Played earlier today for a short while and its taking getting used to but it works. No more fumbling the fusking 3 button. Doesnt matter whats up just press that side button and there's the gun. I also tried the quick shift to knife and I already got 1 surprised face on ma trophy wall. :D Came round the corner there's one of the MerC boys with his DAO. As a medic I usually lose these encounters. BUT today.... quick hop into the air. Press the back button, out with the knife, 'shlick'...press front button back on the gun. One by surprised AT boy lying on the ground... me standing there like I never held a knife in ma hands in ma entire life... picture of innocence I tell you... I wish I could a seen his face... :D

I have the mx518 and the G5. Both are wired which I think is the better bet for gaming. If you LAN then you may pick up conflict. Also, wireless bits do not like metal tables.

The mx518 has more buttons and I think feels nicer. Smooth wheel. The G5 has a better resolution (2000 dpi vs 1600 dpi) - and probably only makes a difference for extreme range sniping.

G5 has gimicky weights

Both use same software if you want to programme mouse.
