360 games are about the same, but if you shop around you can get some good ones for about R400. Can't speak for the PS3, but Wii should also be around R400, hopefully.

doobiwan

No pre-order yet I'm afraid.

I'm on the verge of ordering from DVD Crave. Aus is the only place with PAL stock, and a console + Wii Play (remote) and shipping + 20% for tax comes in at around R3800.

But my good sense is telling me just to hang tight till I can get locally

R3800... ouch. Wait for a bit dude, let SA get its stock. I recall buying the GC when it was just launched in SA for R2400 only to see it sell for R999 6 months later. Ouch.

Yeah I know.

I've still got this whole crisis of conscience with the 360 and the Wii. So I'm happy if things take a bit longer, I'm just waiting for the day MS announces a Wiimote for the 360. ;)

Did you read the recent news on BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6161261.stm)? Seems the novelty is wearing off...

In an age of high-definition gaming with photo-realistic character models and intricately-realised buildings and models, it is a real throwback to put a Wii disk into the machine and see the cute, colourful graphics with crudely drawn figures and decidedly retro look to the interface.

The Wii is certainly no visual powerhouse and the limitations of the images are shown up even further when played on a HD television.

But for the vast majority of gamers with standard definition TVs, the Wii's limitations graphically can be overlooked if the games themselves are fun and involving.

The different sports are a mixed bag of entertainment - all are fun in their own way but some are clearly more involving than others.

Gone are the days when you would have to learn a series of complex button combinations to pull off that sliced volley, home run or chip shot; instead the Wiimote can be used as a virtual bat or boxing glove.

Gamers are advised to fasten the safety strap to their wrist and it is advice worth following - during hectic sessions the Wiimote can easily slip out of your hand.

And it is worth making sure you have plenty of room in which to play: my wife and I literally came to blows when boxing and I managed to swipe a lamp shade during one frenetic tennis match.

The sport games are more mini-games than fully-featured titles. There is a disappointingly limited range of options for each sport - just one course for golf, no variation in the bowling or baseball games and only a few rounds of action in the boxing.

The success of the games stands and falls on the ability to truly control the on-screen action with the Wiimote and in this regard the Wii is a mixed success.

There is a learning curve with all new games and control systems but I had the distinct impression that often the action on the screen was only loosely connected to how I used the controller.

For a game bundled with the console, Wii Sports does a great job of introducing people to the concept of using the new controller without ever really pushing the envelope.

Certainly it will prove to be an entertaining party game - and it has the distinction of being the first videogame I have ever managed to persuade my wife to play.

She was impressed with the simplicity of the controller but often frustrated that a swipe of the remote did not always translate into a stunning backhand or long, straight drive.

But she was playing games. And if Nintendo can persuade my wife to play games then winning over the world's non-gamers should be straightforward.

Looks like it works for some but not for others. ;)

Yeah, I got this from Remote in Aus:

No Wiis were around the city centre friday night, but i managed to find a Wii site showing when all the demos were around Brisbane. They have been happening since early Nov! I went to a major shopping centre a few kms north of us called Chermside. Big place kinda like the Pav. There were Wii demos in many of the electronic stores. The one in EB Games was free so i had a go on Zelda. Played a fishing game in Zelda, so it has the casting, reeling it in (nunchuck has a motion sensor too?!). buttons on each controller too, bit confusing at first but soon got the hang of it. Must admit i felt like a bit of a fool at this stage, waving my arms around in the air likea fruitloop in the middle of the store. Then asked the assistant if i could see the Zelda gmae itself, went to a demo section did the sword tutorial, and went out and swished the sword around on a few fools, and then switched to the bow whioch you use the right hand controller to aim with on screen. The gameplay is very cool, lots of options for jumping around, but the big letdown for me was the graphics, serious PS1 stuff, even wrse than some PS1 games like final fantasy VII :P Dont get me wrong it was alright, just not the high end i was expecting to compete agianst PS3 and Xbox 360. But i guess eye candy is a short lived joy, once you get into a game you tend to forget about those things, and if the game play with the controllers is good, that will be all through the game adding to the fun. I saw some guys at one of the other demos doing dual fishing. Didnt look too long at that as it didnt look too exciting, i was hoping for tennis or something. Im sure i will see some more in a few months, its early days yet. Did hear one father say to his son after they saw me tinkering around on zelda that they would get one.
