Just popped out to Incredible (:hurl:) and bought the retail copy of this - wanted to try it forever, but wasn't willing to waste the bandwidth downloading it. So, I get home and eagerly pop it into my CD tray and see "...Connecting to Steam...." AAAAARRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Downloading the updates is taking forever (even on a 512 line)!
That aside, anyone else tried it?
Ah! I see other RO threads! Apologies! Didn't see them at first!

That is the main problem I have with Steam. You buy a game that is also sold through Steam, you get Steam, even if you buy the retail version at a shop. At least EA Link is strictly optional...

Ag, apart from the downloads taking awhile, I find steam works very well. I've bought a couple of games through it and have had no issues.
How much did the RO set you back at incredible ripoff?

R299! Must say, though, having spent the last night and day playing it, I like it. Very different, I think, to the BF series. No HUD, no name tags etc, but fun. If it had a ranking system like BF2 and BF2142 I'd be seriously hooked. Nice thing is that playing on Int servers with a ping of 280-300 there's minimal lag, and the plonkers playing there tend to have the reflexes of an arthritic buffalo. They don't have the paranoia of a BF player.... Pity the local server is rarely populated.

Man, buying it directly through steam is half price. You'd be looking at ~R140, but then you're looking at the cost of the download too... unless someone was willing to pass their .gcf file along. ;)

If I knew what a .gcf file was you could have it! In fact, tell me what/ where it is and you can have it!

Heh, it's the file that the game is stored in in steam - it's in your Valve\Steam\SteamApps folder. It's NOT the unlocked game - for eg, if you passed it along to me, I would still need to purchase the game and unlock it before I could play. You would basically be saving me the download.
There may be more than one .gcf involved tho - not entirely sure.
Usually the .gcf is named something along the lines of the game's name - and it may be several hundred megs to a gig or larger in size.

It's all Greek to me! I'll get Shamus to find it and copy it off me hard-drive and we'll pass it along to you ASAP!

Hi N3ddy. Glad you liked our server last night. This is the best FPS out there. No, crosshairs, shoulder mounter rockets or laser blasters. Just you, a bolt action or smg, a couple of nades and a bayonet! Oh and occasionally a tank ;)
Enjoy :D

and the plonkers playing there tend to have the reflexes of an arthritic buffalo hehe N3ddy I think one of those 'plonkers' came looking for you. :roffel:
Sounds like a good game. I just really HATE the steam thing. It feels like handing over your PC to alien control or something.

Yesssss..... I was a bit worried about that.... No, actually he's a member of a British clan which is run along similar lines to the Geeks, with a "fun first" approach to gaming. They have their own server and it was far more competitive than the others I'd played on. They were very friendly and nice (Is he still listening?)

Yep I went to visit their website. Seems like its run on the noBS approach.

Played a lot with them this past week, and they're very cool. Mostly older guys who laugh a lot and don't take it seriously. Use Ventrilo, works a treat and minimal lag. Trying to get Shamus to play again, but he keeps swearing and looking for his Titan gun....
