Howdy Kami :

1. What movies are you trying to play? The X360 will only play regular DVDs in PAL or Region Free format. It wont play DiVX movies or NTSC. For that you will have to find a workaround via Media Player 11 or Media Center from your PC.

2. The X360 drive is only usable to store images from your memory stick, download content from Xbox Live and your save games. I think you can also rip music CD's to it but its best if you simply play your music from your PC and connect your X360 to it via Media Center.

I think there are threads here already which do describe how to setup your PC with media center and connect it to your X360.

Hope this helps. :)

Howdy Kamakazi, grat's on getting a 360, more importantly, what's your gamer tag and what games are you playing ;) (Better say Gears of War and Burnout :p)

As far as playing movies go, you can stream them from your PC only if they're in .wmv format, so either covert them manually using super (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html#Dnload) or on the fly using TVersity (Need a pretty Hefty PC though)

Then you need Media Player 11 which will apparently act as your server/media connector, although personally I've never done it myself.

You wont need media player, but you will need Window Media Connect. Tiny app that you download and install on the PC to authorize the XBOX to stream media. The XBOX will give you the link to the app. It is really easy, I had mine up and running in 5 minutes.

Hey Kami, welcome to the land of 360 goodness :D

What Slappy and Doobi say are both relevant but here is a quick run down.

If you have xp on your pc you can us windows media connect to stream music and pics from your pc.
Mediaplayer 11 apparently lets you play Movies via a xp machine, I have not tried this though.
By default the 360 can NOT stream movies from a xp pc.

To stream movies off your pc you would need Windows media centre edition (unless Mediaplayer 11 does work). Do as doobi said about converting other formats to wmv.

The HDD for the 360 is used for Converting cd's to mp3 on your 360, saved games, putting pics on. Also For downloading content from LIVE, like demos/ arcade games/ updates (for games and the 360) also movies if you stay in america.

Hope this helps. :)

Thats odd, cause I dont remember upgrading to Media player 11. And mine streams just fine. I wander if it didnt come through with an automatic update. Must check that when I get home

So Slappy you using XP and you stream movies to your 360?

I heard they were going to do an update for the 360 so it could stream from XP as well, maybe they did :D

i think my xp just has mp11, it has those shared "music/video/picture" folders.. which the xbox can see

I tried the media connector software but it borked, and my MP11 is acting all funny like. Will try reinstall as soon as I can tear myself away from Zuma to sit at teh PC for 5 minutes ;)
