View Full Version : So, what happened to the site?

Someone - meaning well - but without any technical knowledge, approved a transfer for the link to another ISP.

The ISP stupidly didn't notify anyone when they up and changed the link, and they were also not aware that we had a static IP block for the link.

It took us a few hours to figure out wtf had happened, and an additional hour or so for the ISP to pull their thumbs out their bums and give us another IP block - which, to their credit, they provided for free.

Then after configuring the new IP block on the router, the internal network was suddenly inexplicably unavailable from externally, despite the fact that only the IP block had changed.

So... we tried updating the router's firmware, which, in my infinite and sleepy wisdom, gave a link to the wrong firmware, so we ended up bricking the router. :grr:

After a bit of travelling back and forth to get the correct firmware, my brother finally got the router up and running with the latest image, which seemed to have fixed all sorts of bugs, because miraculously, things that weren't working before suddenly started working.

Then it was a matter of changing all references to the old IP address on the server to the new one, and waiting for DNS to propagate. And here we are. :p

Ironically, while modifying some of the mail server filters the other day, I was thinking to myself that the box's IP address would never change. Damn you Murphy! :p

Anyway, after being on the phone with my brother in the States for an hour and a half (his penny thankfully), I finally got to bed around 01h30, so now I'm operating on not much more than three and a half hours sleep. Joy.

Well.... I dunno about faster. I'm still iffy about that. To my mind it's a bit slower, but I'm not trusting my very groggy perceptions right now.

If something along those lines happens again, feel free to come over and hang out at our pad. It's not as colourful, but we would enjoy having you!
