But then again, if you're making say GTA4 and you need to put up a billboard in the middle of town, that's going to have an Ad anyway, why not?

I agree, marketing is like cancer, once those tossers get a foot in they will try every other tatic to ram their product down your throat. Next thing gameplay becomes secondry. Look what it did for the web!
