I've been a keen board gamer (Avalon Hill etc) since I was a teen (Loooooooooong agooooooooo), and play games via e-mail on various sites. Nothing, however, has rekindled my passion for these old timers like the new 1.2 patch!!!!! No patch required with cardboard....

This is not true. Many board games have had updated rules released. Puerto Rico, one of the best rated board games, has even had a set of additional counters released. So we have had updates and expansions for board games - what is true is the fundamental game mechanics, such as rolling a dice, have not become buggy or suffered from lag.

Me monopoly board had to be upgraded after a couple of street names became so worn that we had to use the box top picture to solve arguments about which street was which.

And then ... the blerry manufacturers insisted that we buy a complete new set, and then the new set is all Southafricananised and the dog keeps falling on it's nose cos it's tail is too short.

Blerry upgrades !!!

Uh never played Warhammer/Mage knight etc then?

The whole point is the constant pillaging of your wallet to upgrade your army. . . .

Mmmmm.... Don't play miniatures, to be honest. Anyone ever played Advanced Squad Leader?

Right, I've been pretty damned patient waiting for a response!
I'm guessing that the answer is no!

Played Squad Leader. ASL just got too damn expensive. And the local distributor of the games is a bit of a gouger.

What's a "gouger" in this context?

(Only know the word when used to e.g. "gouge someone's eye out")

I'm currently buying a lot of games direct from the publishers and, with customs duties etc, it STILL works out cheaper than buying them locally! ASL is a pig, so I've moved on to the Panzer Grenadier series. Far more flexible and fun, without losing realism.

I like Boggle, does that count?

I'm kinda with you here, some of those games don't really sound like anything i've ever heard of, besides seeing Alb's collection, that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge.

However, with this, the age of blackouts, Board Games have come through like you won't believe. Most methods of entertainment these days really rely on electricity, whether its watching a series of this with the family, watching that film, playing with your Wii, trying to get your pistol badge in BF2, or moreover, just cooking a meal, or making a cup of tea.

Board games have saved me from boredom - one camping torch plus one of the many board games can easily get you through that 2 to 3 hour blackout. Or rather, help you keep the annoyance level down. Golly glee, i mean, a good round of balderdash, with some experienced rubbish talkers could last an hour, never mind some monopoly, the compulsory card games (rummy, sevens, beg your neighbour, war, snap - just one round please, vreetkaart etc.), ludo, snakes and ladders (one round, just for kicks, cause it gets lame), even chess or chinese checkers, and dambord! So many wonderful things to entertain yourself with for the fraction of the price!

DnD (Forgotten Realms) was DESIGNED for loadshedding! 1 Candle is enough to see the D20 & your piece of paper. Less outside influences to destroy the concentration!

Man I used to enjoy the games we had.. NinjaDave is a great DM.

These days I spend the day charging up the laptop battery and when the power is out at night we watch series on the laptop until it dies (about 3 episodes).. Pity the sound is sooo low.

ADnD pure PNP game - loved it in high school, had a very forgiving DM, but now there is another version out and i can';t be bothered to learn the new rules. Still, most fun ever.

Funny story, and i'm getting old, so i can't remember if i told it, back in Matric i was playing this with my DM during exam times, and i remember there was this hill i had to get up, and Like Druss the deathwalker, i killed various enemies as i tried to get up this hill. at 9 we had to go write english, with an hour allotted for creative writing, open topic.

My DM and i both got an A for that bit, because without discussing it beforehand, we were stumped for a topic, so i wrote about the battle up the hill from a first person perspective, what i saw and what i did, and my DM wrote about the SAME story in the first person perspective, what i did and what i DIDN'T see. The teacher thought it was brilliant - and i think that was also the last time i played.

I know, i know... i'll tuck it back in.

Luckily i've succeeded in being WAY too cool to ever be considered a nerd.
Plus i don't wear glasses, so people would NEVER suspect! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Saving throw vs Nerdishness.... Failed!
$abre started us out on our road to doom many moons ago, cos he can't stand rolling die and checking charts. When you consider that the rules alone for ASL are two weighty lever-arch files, he may have had a point, but there is nothing like spending time over the cardboard minions at your disposal.
As for DnD, well let's just say that DM Shamus puts up with a lot when we play....

I haven't switched on the ol' games PC in a month, I think, and not going to for a while you daft git! The Wii, on the other hand, is ALMOST as much fun as wargaming!

Blinks, I'm a in a "finding my inner cardboard child" phase at the moment I'm afraid. I shall endeavour to launch my might lvl 9 cleric back into the fray soon, though. For now, I'm waging war against the Italians in the Western Desert! Tally-ho!

That's absolutely fair my chaana, looking forward to your return.
Whenever i'm on a quest to "find my inner doos", i'll definitely check back!

Alby, what games do you have?

Far too many to list but they are mainly the Game of the Year games over the last decade or so. Mainly German.

I do have a heap of Avalon Hill games too

N3ddy

Mmmmmm.... I have about 30 Avalon Hill games and have recently bought a bunch of other titles. I'm not really into the Eurogames as much, but I haven't actually tried any so ignorance is probably the problem there.
Get much play-time out of your AH games?
