Get a low latency WIRED connection, ie ADSL.

What TG said. :slide:
Also, there are people playing on a wireless connection, that do not suffer high latency.
Depends on the ISP you're using and where they connect to teklom and how many users are using the service and .... a whole lot of stuffs.
But ... it's fairly common knowledge that IBurst is not really suited for First Person Shooter Online games.
At the moment, any ADSL shaped account will be fine for playing on the SGS / IS local servers, but for international servers you'll need an unshaped SAIX (Telkom) based account.
If you are running IBURST, phone them and ask them if there's anything they can do for you, I've heard that they can give you a different configuration if you so request.
@Axel : Give us some more information about how you're currently connecting as well mkay .... pffffffffft.

ok, has anybody got any meaningful tips for ADSL though?
I have a 512 ADSL line. The techies tell me I have less "acceptable" errors than most lines (this is a good thing) and yet my ping averages about 50 odd...ok, I know that's not terrible but I've often seen guys running around with pings of 20 something or even 13.
I suspect it may have something to do with packet size and some of the other myriad settings for the local machine. Apparently windoze optimises the PC for connections using dial up...so you can't do more than 3 downloads at a time (through traditional means, not with download managers of course) and the packet size is relatively small. The reason being that if packet size is small there is less chance of it getting corrupted and if it is it doesn't take long to re-send it....each packet also adds overhead to the entire process so its a fine line thing...the packet must be just the right size for your connection.
I did use a program called Cable and ADSL Optimizer. This seemed to work well for regular surfing, email etc but hasn't made any change to my ping in BF2 though....I am guessing this is because a ping is done with a standard size packet and so setting packet size wouldn't change that....its also possibly because BF2 might handle a lot of this for you. I dunno....I'm hardly an expert on this. I consider a novice an expet compared to me. But I would be interested in hearing more thoughts on the subject.

@Pios ... ... useless utterances! :grr: Bloodie braggerz!
What?
Not even the mighty PIOS can play on the SA servers?
Pffffft.
How can this be true?
Anyways ...
Do a tracert to the server you are playing on.
I bet you that the hop that adds 10 ms lag to your connection is the hop right before the BF2 server is reached.
i.e. SAIX have lagged you.
I'll do mine tonight. Now I'm curious as well.
HOW: Open up a command prompt and type: tracert BF2ServerIPAddress
Yes .. you need to replace BF2ServerIPAddress with the actual BF2 server ip address mkay.

Just to check. I start up command prompt and type:
tracert the actual BF2 server ip address mkay
It doesn't work though?

Hey i did what stokie said and got very weird and varying results and im not quite sure what to make of it all
first tries gave results around 15-19  but then i got quite a few timeouts  and results of about 90 :(
the results where all eratic and because none of them were actually "stable" so to speak i dunno what to make of it... could an IT boff tell me whats cracking?
i attached a screenie of it with the post

It means that your network is unstable. Hows about not doing the test while the torrents are downloading?

Ping is the response time for the two connections and the delay added in by all the other transit switches in the network. To reduce your ping you need to either
A. get closer to the source server
B. reduce the overall traffic on the network
C. upgrade the network
D. increase the system perfomance of the server
Sadly, much of this is out of our hands unless you are Dick Branson or Billy-Bob Yates.
So, You can only stop any other app that migth be using some bandwidth, use wired connections and play later at night when the traffic over the rest of the net is a tad lower.
