Syriana

This is a bit older, but nonetheless worth it. Based on a book written by a former CIA operative, it deals with the Oil industry and everything surrounding it. Very complex, as there are basically 3 story threads to follow, but it is worth it. Sad ending. I wanted to buy the DVD but it has vanished from the shops all of a sudden, so I'll have to see where to order it.

I have a copy and it really is a very interesting story. Beautifully made and i think that's as close to the truth as we're ever going to get.

Agreed, but i don't think it's made for the average movie goer.
If you think of it as a showcase, or rather a Snapshot of what goes on behind the scenes, i think this film is a drop in the ocean compared to everything that really happens, i don't think they tried to do to much, the subject material allows for SO much more!
If they left out the personal lives of everyone involved, i think that might have condensed the film to the extent where you'd think it's an average movie - but Syriana was Tangible, it was real. And i think that's why i loved it.

Still, if you're looking for quick kicks, stay away from Syriana, though it's beautifully made with the architectural as well as natural landscapes, it is still semi slow moving, with all the various integrated characters and plots, and only one angle is aimed at action, and the director doesn't even exploit that... suppose it would've defeated the object.

It's kinda sad though...

I loved this movie. The fact that it's not for the average audience made it interesting. I can't watch a movie like that every day, but occassionally it works, and this one really worked. I want to try and get my hands on the book this is based on.

Rainy - If you enjoy that kind of thing, i highly recommend "The Company" by Robert Littell.
Littell is a former Newsweek journalist, with some experience in Spy novels, but nothing to the Company's magnitude. It start from the inception of the CIA and goes on right through to the recent past/present. It follows a number of spies over this time (i think four) but contrary to popular belief - two of these characters are NOT fictional. Pity is, you never know which two...

The read is a mixture between Die Hard and Syriana (if you will), purely because it is action packed and tense one moment (Very lekker splinter-cell like introduction), and then you can't escape the doldrums of bureaucracy the next. But it is quite a marvelous book, if you like that kind of thing.
