Can't wait!
ooh ooh! Extra info from V3D:
Some comments from Pete Hines, Bethesda's PR-in-chief:
1) Yes, that's in-engine (in-engine means it's done with game assets in our rendering engine, but isn't done real-time. If it was done in real-time, that'd be gameplay footage. This isn't something, for example, that was sent to some house [e.g. Blur Studios] so they could build assets and render it out, and create something for us to release [e.g. Dawn of War 40K intro cinematic]).
2) Yes, that's The Ink Spots singing "I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire"
3) Yes, that's Ron Perlman [voiceover man extraordinaire of Fallout 1 and 2; his lines were recently recorded for the trailer].

NO WAY MENEER WINGNUT, IS JY 'n FALLOUT FAN?!
Man, dit was net die beste games ooit in die geskiedenis van die heelal!
I got the GameSpot alert yesterday and i've since watched the trailer probably 17 times. The power armor doesn't look too close to the original, but i suppose that's what it would've looked like if you were "closer".
Also, the little "BoS" insignia... wonder what those bastards are up to this time around.
I followed this since the Van Buren project originally reared it's head, where you had to escape from prison in the beginning of the game, but apparently the main character (you) had no ties to the vault dweller at all. I'm really interested to see what they're going to do with this one, as they've moved over to the east coast of the states for this production, maybe we'll see the post apocolyptic New York, Washington, Boston...
The Ink Spots also did the first Game, "Maybe" was the track title... Always reminds me of the Shawshank redemption's opening scene, where he sits in the car... That music just gives it that ideal 1930/40s feel, and I LOVE IT!
Also, Hellboy is the perfect narrator, i am extremely happy that he is attached to the fallout project again, i hope he has a larger role than narrator.
I am really looking forward to this, Pipboy FTW!

Yeah, Fallout FTW! Its been a while since anything had been said about this ageing franchise. The HD trailer looks schweet indeed! Hope its a 2008 release so they can iron out all the details in the game to its best! :)

Rus, Glad to hear you are also a Fallout man.
It's official, i'm going to pre-order the game and take a weeks leave when it comes out, i am so looking forward to this.
In a recent article, i've read some things that might excite - i'll just post the relevant bits here:
When you reach the outside world, you'll find yourself in the blasted wasteland in and around Washington D.C., a departure from the American West seen in the first two games. This is an area teeming with wild creatures and rival factions, such as the Brotherhood of Steel, which defends the remnants the capital; the Slavers who occupy Paradise Falls, a converted strip mall; and the super mutants, tough-as-nails humanoids looking to take over. This world will be slightly smaller than the one in Oblivion, but that's still big. Where you go and who you ally with will be up to you because the game will have multiple endings. And yes, there will be a definitive end to the game, at which point you can start over to explore the many other choices. And Bethesda really wants to make choices count in this game, much more than it did in Oblivion. After all, in Oblivion you could pursue every quest in the game and be all things to all people. In Fallout 3, the choices will be much more binary, and they will have far-reaching consequences.
The example that Bethesda gave of this involves Megaton, a shantytown built around the worship of an unexploded nuclear bomb. When you arrive at Megaton, you'll eventually have two choices. A stranger will reward you if you rearm the bomb, as he represents a developer that would like to wipe Megaton from the map to make room for a nice postnuclear suburb. Or you can inform the town sheriff of the plot and save the town. If you choose to go along with the stranger, Megaton will be wiped out of existence in a glorious nuclear blast; thus, all the quests and adventures associated with it are gone. However, by blowing up Megaton, you'll open up a new area in the game that you would not otherwise have access to, Tenpenny Towers. But if you decide to save Megaton, you won't experience the quests and adventures associated with Tenpenny Towers. Talk about a tough call.
Fallout has always been known for its ridiculously over-the-top violence. For instance, if you fire a shotgun at point-blank range in the original game, bodies explode in showers of gore. As Howard noted, that tongue-in-cheek splatter is part of what made Fallout so much fun. And that's something that Bethesda is working to capture in Fallout 3. Heads will explode, limbs will get sawed off by gunfire, and we even saw eyeballs fly out of their sockets then roll down an incline. This will be the case especially if you have the infamous bloody mess character perk, which boosts the odds that each death you cause becomes a spectacular one. Bloody mess is just one of the many returning character perks from earlier games, though Bethesda is adding plenty of its own as well.
The weapon, armor, and equipment system is similar to Fallout, as well as other RPGs, because you'll recover plenty of items from defeated foes or the environment. These range from conventional gear to some ludicrously overpowered stuff, like the Fat Boy, a portable nuclear bomb catapult. Weapons and armor will deteriorate with use, but you'll be able to restore them by using your character's repair skill along with duplicate versions of whatever you're repairing. In other words, you can cannibalize parts from one item to fix another, as long as they're identical. You can't strip parts from a pistol to repair an assault rifle; you have to have the same version of assault rifle. As weapons break down, their capabilities worsen. For example, the weapon's rate of fire will slow, its accuracy will decrease, and so on. Having a fully restored weapon versus one that's falling apart is like the difference between night and day. Or, you can create your own weapons from various parts.
Golly Glee

I think here (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/800/800884p1.html) is a pre-E3 glimpse of the game.
Life after the apocalypse isn't pretty. Nor is the Wasteland population particularly friendly. Radioactive free meat is hard to come by; and to a Mutant, you look like an ultra-tasty, walking, and talking, 180-pound chunk of prime rib. Combat in Fallout 3 is what I like to call "Freeze-Based-Combat". It's not precisely real-time, nor is it truly turned-based. After clicking on an enemy, the V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) comes on-screen, dividing the target into what can best described as a butcher's chart. You have a percentage chance to hit whatever zone of the body you're aiming for, each with a different possible effect. For example, if you do X amount of damage to a leg, there's a chance you could cripple or even blow it off. If you try to shoot a weapon out of someone's hands, there's a chance to disarm for opponent, or even break the item in question. I'm not 100% sure if you can run around and play in all real-time, but they didn't seem very keen on the idea of making Fallout 3 a run-and-gun, twitchy first-person-shooter.
Looking good!

Thanks for that Article Rus, i can really just eat this stuff up!
I'm not going to lie, i am a bit disappointed with the power armor, it didn't look like that to me, but overall, based on the backgrounds in the screenshots, they have pilfered so many visuals from the other two games, that i have absolutely no fear that this will be a visual masterpiece.
But another year... man, i've been waiting for 10, so i suppose one more aint gonna kill me!

In the meantime you might want to try out Bioshock in late August for the PC/X360. It has close resemblance to System Shock and should keep your single player ambitions quite busy. ;)

Oooh, got this nice update from Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/fallout3/news.html?sid=6189021
some things that are getting me really excited:
In a sprawling junkyard scene, two desert raiders have assaulted and killed a nameless man, leaving his feisty canine companion to fend for himself. The dog is none other than Fallout's Dogmeat, the swift-moving, loyal, pugnacious pooch from the original 1997 game. After disposing of the raiders yourself, you can invite Dogmeat to join you, and from then on, although you can't have any meaningful conversations with him or have him carry a ton of inventory, you can give him plenty of orders, such as having him go out to search for food, medicine, or even fallen weapons (if there are none nearby, Dogmeat will disappear for an hour or so of in-game time before returning). You can also praise or scold him--this won't affect his morale or loyalty, though it will reflect whether your character is naughty or nice
Feral ghouls are extremely swift and vicious, leaping at you with tremendous speed. We dealt with them primarily using real-time combat, using the old Fallout favorite 9mm submachine gun, which did a good job of inflicting lots of damage when fired in bursts. A few times, we watched as combat switched to the turn-based VATS mode, which lets you target various body parts on your enemies (as in the original Fallout games). In these cases, the final shots to our enemies were delivered in dramatic slow motion, sometimes even turning the ghouls' limbs and skulls into bloody pulp (though we're told that the infamous Bloody Mess perk, which causes everyone around you to die spectacularly, looks even more insane in practice).
Depressing:
According to a Bethesda representative, the primary game is shaping up to have somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 hours of gameplay, though it will offer dozens of hours of other stuff to do for players who enjoy exploring side quests and other types of content.
After playing wow for 6 months, and not even getting up to half the stuff i could do in the game, or even visited all the available areas, i'm sure 20 hours will just fly by.

Highlights:
Interplay relaunches site, rehires original Fallout dev
Perhaps more importantly, the company laid more concrete plans for development of its proposed Fallout MMORPG, code-named "Project V13." Interplay has rehired Chris Taylor*, one of the developers of the original Fallout in the mid-1990s, to be lead system designer for the game. According to its careers page, the publisher is also hiring a technical director for Project V13 to oversee all aspects of programming for the project.
It looks like we just might have a Fallout MMORPG - and if that's the case, i'm sure my WoW days are over. But i won't make that call too hasty - let's play F3 first!

It only works if your console is chipped and AFAIK only consoles March 08 and backwards are chippable. Thats until the next update is out.
Need I say that some developers are shying away COMPLETELY from the PC market due to piracy? End War is being delayed solely due to piracy on the PC side? More and more games will become STEAM only? :p

Some developers yes... luckily not all (http://draginol.joeuser.com/article/303512/Piracy_PC_Gaming)....
And I don't mind Steam, in fact I'm a big fan. One central place to update all my games from? Hell yeah, bring it on!
That being said I love my physical media, and like buying games and owning the little dvd box and manual and putting it in my display case (locakable! For my brother's laaitie... ) for all to admire... So give me a disc with the install files, activate via Steam or Impulse or whatever digital content delivery platform you prefer, and let me play the game without treating me like a potential criminal for buying your game.

By now, you've probably noticed that we're giving Fallout 3 a big ol' score, so in the interests of quelling any outcry - no, this game is not perfect. In particular, we really wish that Bethesda had worked more on the dialogue system. In this post-Mass Effect era, it's disappointing not to hear yourself talk and to have to pick your dialogue options from big blos of text. Other quibbles: NPC chatter often overlaps in a confusing tangle, the third-person view is more than a bit crap, and we were always bummed that in such an otherwise-detailed world, no one noticed the corpses of their friends who we'd just stealthily killed. The biggest annoyance, though, is not being able to fast-travel unless you're outside - commuting sucks enough in real life, so we really resent it in our games!
Not a perfect game but nonetheless...

Eurogamer's (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=270173) review is out :
Fallout 3 is such an embarrassment of riches, it's hard to know where to begin. The news is definitely good though, because whichever way you stack it up it qualifies as a landmark game. Like BioShock and Oblivion, unpicking its merits is something of a Gordian knot. But that is, of course, precisely its charm.
The bedrock, as you would hope, is the game's immensely well-realised and beautiful openworld. Arty, varied and epic, it's crafted with attention to detail, housing secrets, lies, hopeless ambition and revenge. The Capital Wasteland has a palpable sense of place, where even the more obscure backwaters hide pleasing diversions, intriguing characters and curious sub-plots.
It doesn't seem to matter which angle you take with Fallout 3 though, because there's usually something pleasing to report. It makes the fiddly micromanagement of weapons, apparel and health a relative joy with a slick, intuitive interface. It rewards and encourages progress with a transparent and logical levelling system. It delights with countless improvements to the Oblivion engine, physics and animation. Even the script and voice acting are pretty decent, and there are reams of detailed text logs to discover. At one point, you even stumble across a playable beta version of a fully-fledged text adventure.
Question marks will always linger over how much it can live up to the expectations of diehards, and people will argue about how Bethesda's storytelling stands up to Black Isle's, but this is a new game, from a different developer in a different era, and the most important thing for now is that Fallout 3 manages to improve on almost everything Oblivion did well, as well as what it didn't do so well - and how it streamlines a lot of the questing without resorting to dumbing-down. For a fair chunk of you, that's pretty much all you need to know.
They gave it a whooping 10/10 as well. Heck!
Ruslan74
28th October 2008, 07:31 AM
IGN (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/924/924165p1.html) gave it a 9.6/10 :
It's rare that a game can hit the mark in so many different and often conflicting areas. Fallout 3 offers freedom without sacrificing a focused story. It delivers fantastic combat without forgoing a deep role-playing system. The characters you meet are engaging and oftentimes hilarious without feeling out of place in this harsh world. The game has a few flaws -- most of them technical -- but it's a case where the whole is greater than the sum. It's a fantastic game with incredible atmosphere that offers fun in so many different ways that you're almost sure to get hooked. This is one of the best games you'll play this year.

Fallout 3 downloads begun on Steam a few hours hours ago. There was no pre-loading, so as you can imagine, download speeds are less than super awesome at this point (thanks, Brian). Shady programs on your PC? Never! :p
Now an update on Reclaim your Game indicates that this has turned out to be an exaggeration at best, saying the game ships with SecuROM version 7.36.0006, and notes the Bethesda Game Studios Forums have posts from many users unable to install Fallout 3, who are apparently being told by customer service reps that they need to uninstall any third-party CD-writing software to be able to run the game. There's another forum post for those who have SecuROM issues with workaround instructions and a pointer to the SecuROM Website where there's a replacement launcher for Fallout 3, as well as a replacement launcher for Far Cry 2.

Considering that Bethesda had no DRM whatsoever on Oblivion, this is a bit disappointing. I buy games in spite of DRM, and never had problems with Securom, Tages or even Starforce, but I'd still prefer it without.
Ruslan74

Just some info on the DRM for the PC version (http://bethblog.com/index.php/2008/10/30/fallout-3-uses-securom-only-for-disc-check/) :
For Fallout 3’s copy protection on PC, we use the same security model as we did for Oblivion - a simple disc check. We only use SecuRom’s disc check functionality for copy protection. We do NOT limit the number of installs. We do NOT use online authentication or any other SecuROM functionality except for a disc check when you install the game and when you launch the game. We do not install any other programs and we don’t have anything that runs in the background while you’re playing the game.
If you experience issues installing the game, try running setup.exe directly off the disc. That will resolve most compatibility issues.

Got the game , awesome Lunchbox :D My little bobhead is in my car bobbing away
Now the game .
First feeling of the game is nice , Love the conversations , nice simple start , controls are easy .. Graphics very very nice
a few things annoy me alot
I've got a 22" wide screen .. running game at all Max settings . The annoying part is ... doesn't matter what res you run , the higher the res everything just gets bigger ... atm my 10mm pistol is almost realsize on the screen .. so half my screen is gun.
3rd person view is even worse ... target point is in the middle but the dude runs off middle to the side .. I keep on wanting to get the camera behind him ... might be a setting haven't checked
Also the local and world map ... Annoying green and black , absolutly no landmarks or anything with no minimap display ... checking map every 2 min to see where you are.
Last thing ... the conversations actually distracts me of the actual looking at the person who your talking too ...
overall ... nice game .. too early to really say

Eyeball, use VATS for targeting. It helps a lot. Otherwise you will run out of ammo pretty fast. And use your trusty baseball bat/hammer/whatever to save ammo.
Have you tried the mouse wheel to set your camera view.
I agree the map thing is a pain. And I keep pressing M to get the map, then realize I have to press tab.
But overall, a great game so far for me.

Landmarks as in buildings and stuff? I usualy place markers which you can see over your compass but once you venture more often into the Wastelands some landmarks do standout.
Have spent at least +14 hours into this game and its getting more interesting as I go along. :)

What I actually ment with landmarks is : I'm used to looking at your map seeing landmarks on it , then when your running around in wasteland you work on landmarks instead of jumping to your minimap all the time

not reading anythiing from my lunchbox post - BT games didn't deliver my fallout on friday, checked the invoice and it said it was bundled with my other order of a later date, so i mailed them and asked, why in the name of all that is holy, would i order something only to get it two weeks later? are there crackheads that do this?!
So now the game is being delivered tomorrow... you know, you wait 10 YEARS for something, and now i have another 24 hours to go before i can enjoy it. Argh.

Sorry to hear that. I decided to get the game, seeing that it would make game No. 100 in my collection and I thought it fitting that it would be the lunchbox edition. However, all the suppliers here are out of stock, so I am ordering overseas. Thank goodness for the Euro savings I have stashed away...

I'm enjoying it so far. I've only just arrived at Megaton.
It took me a bit to get used to the way the game works, with the action points etc.

What I am enjoying thus far is the repair ability which allows you to disarm mines and keep them for yourself. There are abundant mine fields and you can quite easily turn the tables on pursuing enemies by giving them back their own mines. :D
Now who finds the ghouls frightening in the tunnels at times?

Ok, so seriously, those of you who've played it - is it any good?

Yip, its good. The story quests are varied but you will end up being distracted by sub-quests and exploring the desolate country side.
Big game to discover, play and enjoy. :)

Yeah it's taken me ages and I'm not very far :p Keep getting side tracked with.. 'oooh what's that' then 'aaaaaahhh f$#% f$#% f$#% f$#%' while I beat something to death with a stick.

With a stick nogal... Can't wait to get my first shotgun. I rarely like playing with a shotgun, but the sawed off and combat shotgun was like the best small arms you could have.
i think i am going to crap my pants with all the excitement welling up in me. It just BETTER RUN ON MY PC!!!!!

YOu see, my main concern is that i believe this game and Wrath of the Lich King for WoW is timed to launch relatively close to each other. And i just won't be able to cope with that.
Looks like i was right... thankfully WoW is no longer the end all and be all.
Did you guys hear Interplay kept the right to develop a Fallout MMO and we should have it before 2013? or was that 2011? Either or, that sounds pretty cool!

The Combat Shotgun is awesome for close encounters but I find the Hunting Rifle to be able to deal serious headshots to most Raiders in the game. I mostly rely on the landmines as a softener and then finish off the limping enemies with the shotgun/rifle from close. :)

ok, so my awesome lunchbox and awesome bobblehead and awesome game arrived yesterday. And yes it is all AWESOME!!!!!
Especially the game. Cleared out the vault, Springvale elementary school and Springvale (couldn't run for like an hour, trying to lug all that crap to Moira) and bought my first combat armor and shotgun shells in megaton, only to pick up a combat shotgun when i finally killed those raiders at the super-duper mart, but that's till where i played.
Oh, and PS, did you guys also look for Moira for like an HOUR?! shouldn't walk around in the dark i suppose. Now i have a nifty new house! think i am going to buy an infirmary first, just need 5 billion bottlecaps first...
I am in awe! i'm am SO stoked that F3 turned out to look and sound the way it does, and just how simple the mechanics of the whole thing is. l mean, the learning curve is like 10 minutes! (well, that's if you spend the years building up to the game reading everything, reading the manual while installing and have prior fallout experience)
so far i am enjoying it, but the sucky thing is, i'm going to the ODI tomorrow in Potch, so i will only be driving home at like 12:00 at night, so no fallout for me tomorrow - let's hope bangladesh bats first.

Got my lunchbox today. Nice edition, and a worthy No. 100 in my collection :D Will give it a squeeze tonight. Still trying to figure out what to do with the bobble head though... But Bethesda always put some effort into their CEs.
Blinky, why don't you come over to Klerksdorp after the match and kuier with me and my son? You can always drive back the next day.

Anyhow, for those who want to see it - this is what you will see when you first leave Vault 101 :D

Fallout 3 patch for the PC folks, here (http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/downloads/patches.html) :
6.6MB, v1.0.0.15 patch fixes the occasional exit and alt-tab crash.
Why would you wanna Alt-Tab within Fallout? Huh?

And in other news :
Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax Media company, announced that its hit title, Fallout® 3 has enjoyed record sales at launch, reflecting the huge consumer demand for the game. Approximately 4.7 million units of Fallout 3 were shipped worldwide last week for the Xbox 360®video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, and Games for Windows® representing retail sales in excess of $300 million.
Released on October 28 in North America at midnight store openings in over 2,000 retail outlets nationwide jammed with fans eager to get the game, Fallout 3 quickly became one of the industry’s top sellers around the world. For example, in the United Kingdom where it was not released until Friday, October 31 the rapid sales of Fallout 3 have led the game to be ranked number one among all video games, as well as being the number one game on each of its three platforms.
Shipped doesnt necessarily mean sold but its an impressive figure anyhow. :)

So PC gamers get some DLC loving (http://www.videogamer.com/news/13-11-2008-9918.html) :
Microsoft has confirmed that Fallout 3 will be the first title to offer DLC through the newly announced Games for Windows LIVE Marketplace.
Pete Hines, vice president of public relations and marketing for Bethesda Softworks commented: "Games for Windows LIVE helps us expand the Fallout 3 universe and bring the full experience directly to gamers. Through the Marketplace we now have a no-nonsense way to deliver updates and great downloadable content. It's really a complete package, and a great fit for Fallout 3."
Wonder what it is?

New info on DLC :
Bethesda Softworks, a ZeniMax Media company, today announced plans to make both its editor and downloadable content available for its award-winning game, Fallout 3 in the coming weeks. The official editor for Fallout 3, called the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), will be available for free download in December and will allow Games for Windows users to create and add their own content to the game. In addition, the first official downloadable content, Operation: Anchorage, will be available exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows in January, and more downloadable content coming in February and March.
“We’ve always seen the original world of Fallout 3 as a foundation for even more content. Some created by us, and a lot more created by users,” said Todd Howard, game director for Fallout 3. “It’s fun to create your own character, but it can be equally fun to create your own adventures. We can’t wait to see what the community does with the G.E.C.K.”
The release of the G.E.C.K. provides the community with tools that will allow players to expand the game any way they wish. Users can create, modify, and edit any data for use with Fallout 3, from building landscapes, towns, and locations to writing dialogue, creating characters, weapons, creatures, and more.
Three downloadable content packs will be coming to Xbox 360 and Games for Windows Live starting in January that will add new quests, items, and content to Fallout 3.
# Operation: Anchorage: Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.
# The Pitt: Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.
# Broken Steel: Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.
So hurry up and finish the current storyline as there will be another +20 hours of game time ahead! :D

looking forward to creating my own content.
I remember Max Payne had a level editor like that, i built matrix loading rooms for myself, could never figure out the lighting though, so Max was very dark.
Bless them for doing this!
