I'm on my way home from work this afternoon, just about to turn onto the highway when the left lens pops out of my glasses.
Now this is a slight problem, because I'm as blind as a bat without my glasses on. I check the frames to figure out what happened. Turns out theres this very thin nylon thread thing that holds the lens into the frame. It broke.
So I had to drive all the way from Sandton to the East Rand Mall without my glasses on. Very interesting trip, let me tell you.
I park at the back end of ERM (The Steers side we call it) and take a stroll, arms extended so that I don't bump into anything, squinting at the stores, looking for an optometrist that would be able to fix the frames. Fortunately I found one relatively quickly who replaced the thread for 20 bucks.
I return to the parking lot, only to discover that my car was gone. :(
I could have sworn that I left it right there, but since I was blind when I parked, I couldn't really remember where the hell I had put the damn car.
Fortunately, after stalking around the parking lot for about 5 minutes, I found my car, a few aisles closer to the ERM entrance than I had initially thought. :D

Man - that loose the car in the parking lot thing ... at least u've got a decent excuse.
I parked mine in Monte'z parking lot.
Watched a rugby game at cobblestones.
When I left I searched through all 4 floors of the parkin lot.
Called Netstar - they could not help me.
I searched for like 28 minutes man.
Had all the security guys there "Helping" me.
Then somebody asks when I came in.
Like - 3 hours ago i says.
They takes me to floor 0.
There's my car.
/me feels like an idiot.
But - what the heck is floor 0 ?
It's like the twighlight zone of parkings ...
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
P.S. A thread holding the lenz ... never heard of that. Showz how much I know about glasses and stuff.

I was also seriously blind, -5 on one eye and -3 or -4 on the other. Basically this means that you can't read magazine print too easily if the mag is >300mm from your nose, also quite often girls that are nice from far turn out to be far from nice.
I had Lasik eye surgery. They slice back the gel on your eye ball with a razor shaver thing, zap zap with a lazer to reshape the lense and flip the jelly lid back on. They give you a relax pill before this so that you end up laughing very easily and joking with everyone who passes by and then with the staffin the operating room.
"Hey Doc do you think I'll be able to play the piano once they've done the opp? Yes? Great, up till now I could only play the guitar."
They may have thrown the relax pill protocol out by now to reduce the lame joke pain.
It worked well, no more glasses. This is good because I'm quite an active fellow and often mountain bike right onto my face. Scuba diving is also better when you can see the fish.

My eyesight isn't quite as bad as yours used to be... I can at least barely see my hands when I have my arms outstretched. Can't for the life of me remember my prescription tho. I seem to recall a -3 somewhere for my right eye, with my left being somewhat worse.
Regarding the lasik:
I:
can't afford it right now
am chicken

Yeah it's become damn expensive was around 7K when I went, now it's double figures.
Chicken? No ways; you can run in front of enemy tanks, sprint through artillery strikes, this should be a walk in the park. And there's always the relaxmabru pill. Have no fear :) and save now, it's worth it.

Trust me, I've been thinking about it for many years, but it always gets the sphincter quivering ;)
I'm really not keen on being awake during the procedure. I'm a huge wimp like that. :D

i think my eyesight is -2.5 on both eyes.... yet i play sports without glasses and tend to use the "force" in the first 5 minutes to "feel" where the shuttlecock is... :D

Yes, I also used to play sports without vision. Developed really fast reflexes for badmington and volleyball. Could only react when I saw the ball or shuttlecock. One does seem to work out a way of guessing where the damn thing should be though. Worst was playing soccer with my mates, couldn't always see where my teamies were.
BLUR "PASS, PASS, OVER HERE!"
ME "LIKE HELL! WHO ARE YOU?"
Edit: How about that poll TG?

Now since this is my very first post on this forum I suppose I had better be kind sweet and nice. I am really sorry to hear about your glasses and your nearly stolen car. But (goes down on knees and looks upward) THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU that I dont live in Boksburg anymore ...drive on a road there...anywhere near the East Rand Mall :P

OK, so who else has had the laser surgery? I've been tempted for a while too - it's about R20k now and the med aid won't cover it. I use contacts which work OK for me, but aren't the greatest for swimming with! :D

If the medical aid does not cover it, then they also won't cover any complications resulting from it.
Tread hexxxxxxtrememly carefully here lad.

i'm keen for it
dont they call it LASSIK?
not really hectic surgery from what my dad tells me, few shots with the laser and your done.
btw his eyes were about -4 (nearsighted)
after the laser did his bit he can see better long distance than an avg human being but his nearsight suffered a bit (nuthing that over the counter reading glasses couldnt solve)
being nearsighted myself i dont think its such a bad trade to go from nearsighted to farsighted, will definitely do it one day
