Me: I am from South Africa

American: mmmhhh? ... where is Africa?
Me: It is that land-mass below Europe
I normally stopped there cause the glazed look in their eyes was not really helping the conversation further. :p

If the conversation did continue, it was normally followed by questions such as:
** Do you have cars there? or;
** Do you have wild animals walking around in your village

At the end of the day it shows that all these efforts to try and make the beauty contests more meaningful (by asking the contestants these kinds of questions) are out of place. It's a beauty contest - all the contestants are supposed to do (and probably all they actually want to do) is look cute. Asking them about education and foreign politics is just not the thing to do there - unless you want to reveal the level of intelligence most of the contestants possess.
