How many peeps have Guild Wars or are thinking of getting it?

I, for one, am thinking of getting it.

If there's enough interest, we should set up a guild - perhaps someone with local hosting has the resources to host a voip server - either teamspeak or ventrillo for us? I'm not sure how much bandwidth would be required for adequate usage.

- I've downloaded each one to check it out - see which is better.

A couple of me friends play GW... We could join with them... Alternately, a good idea for a next clan game is Quake Wars? Hmm?

Ruslan74

GW is cool, we could setup a Guild for fun. I mostly use Skype with other fellow GW players but we have looked into trying out Teamspeak as well.

It could be a feasible alternative until Quake Wars and GRAW comes out.

GW rocks! The colours I got to dress my monk - Thaine Hraskar - in are a bit, um, pastel-like and make him look a bit, um, light in his sandals, but otherwise it's easy to get into and hard to leave. Like the idea of a WrG Guild.

be aware that there is a +300MB preloading for the Factions preview to happen on the 24th of Feb, so if on the character menu you have a lightning icon with figures moving across its an update.

let it run or else the game will be too laggy until it finishes.

Will probably get GW in the next few weeks. But Factions will have to wait a little longer.

I have been using Teamspeak in the past, it's very reliable and offers a good quality even with low-bandwidth codecs. Will take a look at the current version. If my server wasn't overseas I would host a TS server on it, but this way we are talking lags of several seconds...

The R55 is just for the pre-order pack that gives you two unique items. Factions itself will be the normal price. I see BT games advertize it for R255.

They will be linked to an account, so cannot be given away. If they are lost etc, they can also be recreated with a command in the chat window. They are not better than stuff that can be picked up as well, just have a slightly different look.

"Guild Wars Factions is a stand-alone product. Those who own Guild Wars are not required to purchase Guild Wars Factions in order to continue playing on their game account, and those who purchase Guild Wars Factions may play without purchasing Guild Wars. However, there is a strong level of interconnection between the two games that makes having them both an exceptional experience."

Will you maybe be shipping it early, so that I can actually have it on the 28th? (Just dreaming here.) The game will be of no use until the 28th in any case, since that areas on the servers will only open on that day.

-FX-
16th March 2006, 12:18 PM
Oh yeah that's right, it's pretty much useless until it Factions actually begins. And yeah, many of the times, during "global launches" BT has the titles ready.

EG: I live in EL, and if the game is being released on a specific date officially, BT will courier the game to me the day before so that I actually physically receive it on the day it is supposed to be launched. Granted, it's not like that alllll the time but it was like that for Doom 3, Half-Life 2, and other major titles. Let's just hope that it's the same for Factions as well ;)

Will you maybe be shipping it early, so that I can actually have it on the 28th?

How does one know what quests you still have to do etc. I haven't played for soo long that I've forgotten which I've done and haven't AND does GW remember which quests you have completed?

Ruslan74
17th March 2006, 11:16 AM
GW wont allow you go take on vital quests in the game more than once.

AFAIK the current main quest at Frost Gate is the 6th one and there are a total of 24 main quests ( thanks gkm ).

it might be worthwile to take on a few of the simples quests in Ascalon as you can easily rack up 2k of exp within 1 hour... did that with the ambassador related quests and the asylum 4 days ago.

17th March 2006, 11:19 AM
As you can see I am VERY RUSTY.... thanks

gus
17th March 2006, 12:12 PM
To avoid confusion, one should actually distinguish between missions and quests. Missions are the story in the game and one can do them as many times as one like, but only get the experience for them once per character. Each one also has a bonus component. Frost Gate is the sixth mission. There are 24 of them in total.

Then there are quests, like talking to the ambassador. They are all optional, but are a good source of experience points, items and skills. One can do them only once.

Pressing L gives a list of quests, while missions are shown as shields on the world map.

rainy
17th March 2006, 12:19 PM
Dang, this game is huge. I only played the first mission as of yet, (tried the second one but failed) and about 3 or 4 quests post-searing. Seems GW will keep me busy for a long time still...

If I am around, I will be happy to help with Frost Gate. Put "Gus The Wall" on your friends list and you will see if I am online, then just wisper me.

Yes, I also had a couple of sad BF2 rounds last night that ended in 200+ vs 0 results. Pressing z as one spawns in the vague hope of not getting killed instantly at the last flag is not nice when it happens a lot in a row. I think the one time I had a score of something like 25 that was the second highest on my side. Well, at least I had some better rounds as well.

Yes, I have done it a couple of times. When we have a couple of people in the guild at say level 15 or so, we can maybe make a guild outing from it. No point in doing it with to low levels, then it takes forever. The first time I did it I did not know any better, so did it at something like level 12 with hench. I think I died at least 30 times during the quest, probably more. I was stuck permanently as -60% DP for most of it.

gkm has done it all AFAIK. ;)

Thanks. :) In my dreams. But I think I am fairly close. :D Really looking forward to Factions.

Ruslan74

i would gladly jump into the 4k quest as it would take me to lvl 16... i suppose its best to see who's online when and give it a try.

i browsed through the route to Sorrows Furnace over the holidays and being at lvl 15 had fun trying to survive the lvl 22-24 monsters with NPCs... lol... it looked like the Alamo at times... :p

-FX-
22nd March 2006, 10:13 AM
Well at level 17 (and a ½ ;) ) I can almost make it through with henchmen. If looking at the map, I get within about 1 cm of the objective, but there are just far to many guys at that last area and I get swamped. Will definitely need something to draw them out a little bit as the henchmen tend to run in and get themselves killed. :(

Ruslan74
22nd March 2006, 10:26 AM
a tip i found while playing, while pressing SHIFT you can cast a spell on a different enemy that you are currently attacking. Nice since the enemy mesmers/healers are usually behind a wall of ravaging warriors most of the time...

@gkm - where does one find weapon crafting materials by the way? i read you can add specific elemental damage like fire or cold.

gus
22nd March 2006, 10:41 AM
You can add mods to some weapons to change their attack type. For example, you can add fiery mods to swords. I do not think you can modify staves and wands. See:
http://www.gwonline.net/page.php?p=125

Mods are obtained by salvaging weapons that have them with an expert salvage kit. In this same veins, runes are salvaged from dropped armor that have them with expert salvage kits as well. ID the stuff first to see if it has something you want.

BTW, as far as I know, if you are attacking an enemy with your weapon and then cast on somebody else, you keep on attacking the first one. I do that often with my mesmer. Pick somebody to attack so that the hench also goes for him, then quickly cycle through the rest of the enemies, making them sorry I am around with some nasty spells, before finishing of the first guy. By then, all the other enemies are hurting and are easy pickings. As long as you do not press space again while having another enemy selected, you keep on hitting the first one. I have never had to press shift to do this.

Ruslan74
22nd March 2006, 10:46 AM
oh ok, just read it across some GW forum... :p

as for the mods for weapons, which items do i need to expert salvage? i have that kit but when salvaging purple armor i get runes, can these runes be applied on more than just clothing?

-FX-
22nd March 2006, 10:50 AM
BTW, as far as I know, if you are attacking an enemy with your weapon and then cast on somebody else, you keep on attacking the first one. I do that often with my mesmer.
Thats right, I do the same.

do not think you can modify staves and wands.
You can. I have several "head" modifications for my staff in my bag and I've successfully used one on my current staff. You can "expert salvage" the staff to get the modification back if you want to attach it to another staff.

gus
22nd March 2006, 11:26 AM
Runes are for armor. Mods are for weapons. You need to expert salvage blue/purple/gold weapons for their mods. It is random which mod you get if there are more than one and whether you get one at all. You cannot salvage green, collector and quest reward items for modifiers as far as I know.

@FX, Sorry, I just meant that one cannot have elemental mods on wands/staves. Also, one does not always get the mod back. Sometimes one just get planks/iron etc.

Daamn. Level 9 pre-sear? I struggled my ass off to get to level 8 pre-sear, and I've done every single damn quest in pre-sear that I could find, EXCEPT for across the wall.

Wow, I do not know what to say. You know the name of the game is GuildWars, rather that sim-"cloth factory" or something like that? :D Level 9 is impressively high for pre-sear. Come join us. Other than that I have been doing well, solo FoW and UW runs for fun.
I believe I have been spotted running folks to ToA from LA as well.....

hey so can some one please help me out wif this one not sure if i posted it before and just missed the answer

so salavge kits are like 100g for 25 uses and you can get like 4 or 5 gold the material gained from a sword or what ever so the math doesn't look to good

cause it costs you 4g to salvage an item and you could get a plank which is valued at 3g

only thing i see good about it is that you dont have to run back to town every 2 min so on one oldside town vist you can collect all the items droped salvage them and stack up

there is a question there some where but i think if anyone know what i talking about they will have the answer i need

but i guess for highly salavgeable item i should use the expert kit and any other junk use the normal kit

sidetrack

some guy was buying char carving for 20 gold over the weekend in pikeman

and stax of it tooo what is he going to sell them for later

p.s where can i get a sack or 2 from my storage is all full up wif crap

I think one of the two merchants in Ascalon City sells bags to expand your inventory. I think the merchant in Nolani Academy is the first one to sell the runes you can use to double the size of the bags.

TG

No, you can get runes quite early - I think after you've done a couple of Ascalon city quests, the runes become available.

Virtually every merchant in post-searing Ascalon has bags for sale, and many of them also sell Runes of Holding.

Hallo all

i have a quick little question...

can i modify any weapon or armour with runes or does one get a type of socketed item??? Can I just stick any rune onto any weapon/armour?and finally if so, how??????

thanx you for ur wisdom wise ones :D

TG
5th April 2006, 08:28 PM
I think runes can only be applied to armour - not entirely sure tho.

Just double click the rune, and click the item you want to apply it to.

rainy
5th April 2006, 08:34 PM
Most runes however don't stack. It makes no sense to apply the same rune to more than one piece of armor. Also, you can't apply more than one rune to any piece of armor.

Paragon
5th April 2006, 08:37 PM
o, i c...

how do i go about improving my weapons and armour then or must i pick up really good items? Is there no way to start with a base and then build on that?

TG
5th April 2006, 08:41 PM
Well, craft the best armour you can afford (and have materials for), and then apply various runes to it. Bear in mind that most of the major runes have some kind of penalty, like you'll get +25 energy, but take a -50 health, or something along those lines. Just check them before you apply.

Also, if you replace any armour that already has runes, use an expert salvage on your old armour to retrieve the rune.

Purple, gold and some blue weapons also have upgrades you can salvage with an expert salvage kit and then apply to other weapons of the same kind to build up better weapons.

See this page for info on weapon upgrades:
http://www.gwonline.net/page.php?p=125

(Info above about runes is all correct. Runes are for armor only.)

I just purchased a full set of Drakescale armor at Lions Arch and applied one rune to each piece. I only chose Minor runes however, don't want to take the health penalties...

gus
6th April 2006, 06:56 AM
I often use one superior rune for the primary attribute of my character and then a major vigor to compensate for most of the health lost.

Ruslan74
6th April 2006, 07:17 AM
same with my other characters, get a +2 rune and compensate with a minor Vigor or major Vigor rune. ;)

Hmm... I got the Gladiator Armour, gives me a nice Energy boost. Still dont know if it was the right choice though. How much bucks do you need for a REALLY good set of armour??

gus
6th April 2006, 08:58 AM
7.5K (1.5K x 5) is what most or all of the Droknar's sets cost. That is the maximum armor one can buy in the game. One gets prettier armor that cost more, but not better.

Where can one find this Droknar's armour you speak of!

gus
7th April 2006, 09:18 AM
At Droknar's Forge. :-)

After you ascend, you do one more mission and then your are at Droknar's. Or you can get somebody to run you from Beacon's Perch. I think the going rate for runs from Beacon's Perch is about 3K.

Map:
http://www.gwonline.net/page.php?p=127

Droknar's is straight down from Beacon's Perch.

gus

Yes, slappy, I think you are close enough to droknars that there is no point in spending 3K now.

The most expensive and beautifull armor inthe game is also found in the Sothern Shiverpeaks region. They go for 15k a piece plus the materials to craft them......

15k * 4 = 60k
60k + materials = (alot of)k

Then there is also the Fissure of Woe armor, which is more expensive....(?)

gus
7th April 2006, 12:23 PM
Yes, one has to budget about 1500K for a set of FoW armor in terms of materials and crafting costs.

Note, none of these are any better than 1.5K Droknar's armor. Just fancier graphics and more bragging rights.

I got this Guild Wars Factions Pre-Order Edition on Friday. I am supposed to be able to play Factions a whole 24 hours earlier than the rest of the world plus I get some cool in game weapons.

Anyone else get it?

Just make sure you pick up everything that drops for you and sell it. No matter if it is white etc. A hundred drops at 30 gold each is 3K, which can play for two pieces of Droks armor and it is easy to get a hundred drops over a couple of missions and quests. Drops also get better in value as you progress, which helps a bit. Also, do not buy new armor in every city just for a small increase in AL.

To affort 15K armor one needs some farming or a lucky drop, But for normal Drok's 1.5K armor, the normal drops in the game is enough to pay for it.

To get FoW armor one needs a WHOLE lot of luck and a awesome drop or 4,

My armor for my warrior, necro and ele must have cost me in the region of 8 or 9 mill gold.

But it is SOOO worth it.

PS. I did do a whole LOAD of farming to afford them. But in all i think it took me 2 weeks per set.

If you are interested i can sho you how to farm stuff, my current fav run is running my monk to Mineral springs and killing all the ice imps there, they drop a lil sword that looks like a firy dragon sword but with a blue flame, Those are still around 20k a piece if you have patience in selling them.
