View Full Version : Guild Wars - create the official ZA GW site?

While I was starting with GW today and also looking over the official GW website, I noticed that there is no 'official' ZA website for GW. I was thinking, maybe the GW playing WrG members could pitch together and create one, with info about GW, current news, a forum, screenshot galleries etc.
Before I elaborate my ideas any further, I'd like to know who would be interested in participating in such a project.
Anyone? ;)

Sounds nice. Though i am meaning to ask, how long do we exactly think we shall be playing GW? I am keen in following up with the Factions expansion, so if my latency issues stay good expect me to hang around for a while.

Heck, i've only been busy on the game for a week, gonna finish this first before moving onto Factions, which is probably still going too be a while seeing as i still wanna try the PvP after the PvE stage, pitty though, would have liked too have been part of the new "hype" . :D

I keep trying to jump and/ or dive in GW - DAMN this keyboard! Mind you, I then try running around collecting weapons in BF 2... Explains a lot, really...

So would anyone be interested in running such a project? I mean I could do it alone, but experience tells me that you need at least a couple dedicated people to keep such a thing running.

RN, please elaborate what you have in mind. It is difficult to commit to something if one doesn't have an idea what that something is

OK; what I have in mind is the following:
There are a lot of fansites listed on guildwars.com, some of them are country-specific. There is no such thing in ZA, so with the growing player base here I thought it would be good to have such a thing.
The site would of course sport the usual features: news (you get the press releases from NCSoft), some info about the game, community features, forums... I do hope that if we do this, we can cook up some original content, which is targeted specifically on South African Players. That could be newbie guides to the game and the classes, competitions, guild listings and such things. My goal would be to reach at least the status of 'official fansite' (for more info on that, see this site (http://www.guildwars.com/community/fansites/program/)).
I would also like to try and get some sponsoring from places like BTGames or Digitalplanet, which could be either related to the site cost (domain etc.), or to providing prizes for competitions. But in order to do that, there's gotta be something to show for first...
Technically it should be in the bag. We have enough peeps who can cook up webspace, even locally. We can also get hold of a domain for next to nothing (guildwars.co.za is gone, but guild-wars.co.za is available, so is guildwars.org.za). I am not going to spend money on a forum license when there are good forum systems out there for free (unless we find a sponsor ;) ). The site itself can be easily managed with a CMS such as Drupal (I am running my own site on that). NCSoft is also providing a fansite kit with Logos, images, concept art etc, I already downloaded most of that stuff.
The nature of the site dictates that you can't do it alone. It will take quite some time initially to get it up and running, then the maintenance will also chew a bit if you want to keep the site attractive. You can't rely on the attractivity of a forum alone. I would want the site to be attractive for new players as well as for veterans. We will need people who are acquainted with the technical side, such as setting up the system, creating a design etc., as well a speople who take care of the content, post the news, moderate the forums etc. I've tried to do all that in the past, and it's no fun doing it as a one-man show...
Any more questions? ;)

Slappy, I was thinking of the following due to prior experience, but am open to other suggestions:
Server: I have a Linux dedicated server with full Apache/PHP5/MYSQL5-Support.
Site: use a CMS like Drupal.
Forum: probably SimpleMachines (www.simplemachines.org) - the best free forum I know.

I have created a (temporary) forum in which we can get together and discuss all the details. Anyone who is interested in participating, please register at http://forum.ah-web.org. I will post all the details there in the course of the day.

is this like the semi-official SA GW site now? you want to advertise it at myadsl so other GW players get a peep into it?

This is just a meeting point for the people who want to build the site, so we can keep it out of this forum. I'll advertise it on MyADSL to see if we can find some more peeps who would like to contribute...
The goal of course is to make it the forum for the semi-official SA GW site :p
