Allrighty, so everytime i go near a divx file on my pc this stupid codec window pops up and asks me to register.

Every now and then a little HP window pops up and asks me to register my printer.

Occasionaly the admins on the network try to run some bs apps on my pc remotely!

When my pc starts up some other apps start up and check for web updates.

All this crap is highly annoying so i quickly mashed up this little app to kill them all.
What it does is monitors all processes running, if a new unknown process starts to run, a window pops up and asks you if you want to

-Kill that app
-Kill it always ( adds it to a kill always list)
-Add (Always allow to run)
-Ok ( let it run, maybe it was a quicky but if it continues the prompt again)

It stores the info in an access database so you can go modify any of the processes you've added.
Hardly polished , but it works well for me.

I added this to my system startup and it runs 24/7.

If it doesnt work then you might need

Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8

Obviously first time you run it, its going to bring up A LOT of prompts, cause it will want to know what to do with all those processes running that its never seen before.

let me see if I have this right, you created an app that pops up all the time to kill apps that pop up all the time!?

I can understand the killing of the divx popup (it has a popup? Never noticed before) - either find an alternative, or register it. :p

As for the other stuff that runs on startup.. why not just remove it from running at startup?

yeah, but there are those dumb things that aren't on startup, and the codec kit i have installed is for another codec type 3ivx i think it was, had to use it at work for some reason

things like

googletoolbarnotifier ( not in any startup nor in my browser)

the quicktime updater that pops up every 3 weeks.

its not like everyones gonna need this , but i certainly have a use for it

and it doesnt pop up everytime, if you set a process to kill always, it will just kill it

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Same path but in HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Or, if you don't wanna mess with the registry, there's this nifty lil util called msconfig. Just start->run->type msconfig->ok

Nice idea though. Could be handy with those annoying trojans.

Yes, somehow I do not like this sniper war between processes on my machine. :D I also prefer just to uninstall stuff or remove them from startup.

dunno about you guys but no registry editing gonna solve that problem.

i saw the appy working on his machine and must say it looks extremely useful, especially when some admin trying to annoy u remotely

Oh yeah - simple way to stop the admins messing with your machine.. disable the remote registry service. ;)

i actually dunno how they do it, but being on a domain they kind of always have an admin account to the pc

And then you had to go and put it on rapidshare, which always tells me I'm already downloading a file.

blah :p

i know, i tried to get my own file and rapidshare gave me over 30 minutes of hassles

It's got to do with Active Directory, bro, and the fact that your permissions are set globally, not locally. Clever that, stops peeps disabling certain required administrative accounts needed for security updates & other random MS patches that do more harm than good.

I'd love to be able to lock down my client's PC's - Though shalt not install, thou shalt only watch movies compatible with the codecs I have installed...

Do I get a ban for reviving this thread, TG?
