Basic premise - virus wipes out 90% of humankind. 1% are immune, the other 9% turn into beasts that eat the remaining 1%.
Will Smith is last survivor in New York.
I thought his performance was stellar but not quite as good as Tom Hanks in Castaway. But then Tom Hanks didn't have things trying to eat him every night.
Story line is pretty basic but there are a few points that are left unexplored. Prime amongst these is the view that the Darkseekers have completely devolved but they start demonstrating higher levels of intelligence. I suppose that you are supposed to be left with something to think about.
If there is a message it is an interesting one particularly as the Golden Compass is also around. Should you be vacinated?

:sharp: I haven't watched a good horror like this in a long time.
Very well done! I thought.
:( Not at all a "pick me up" type movie.

I thought it was done very well.
No super heroic scenes ... alot of tense moments and breathtaking scenes.
Alot of the movie's emotional aspects were unlike alot of the ones you find in typical hero-gets-the-girl-in-the-end type of movies.
the ending to me was also done quite well. Although many would disagree. It's a good watch.

Watched this last night.
Pretty good movie, I did have higher expectations for it, but by no means was I disappointed. I like the choice made on how to tell the back story, I have seen it done in a few other movies as well, but heck if it works why change it.
Will did a good job in this and really played the part well, even how attached he was to Sam. (no I'm not saying anything that will spoil the movie, watch it and find out for yourself ;) )

For me it was just bits thrown together. A bit of science, a bit of action, a bit of crying, a bit of he is going crazy so ja it was okay. The sound was WAY to loud thou! Gunshots sounds like cannons.

yes WeeWee
Every movie that has a Sam in it has a love story...
Like Ghost and also in Lord of the Rings, between Frodo and Sam

....and in I Am Sam. Different kinds of love tho. Wee Wee shoulda asked about romance not luurve.

I read the book over the December period.
From the trailer it looks like the film is merely based on ideas set forth in the book, but i'm still keen on going to see it.

hehe, I'm actually reading the book right now (here at work... on my phone...teehee) downloaded it last night, and the book's pretty cool. I also enjoyed the movie quite a lot, some of the CG was a bit iffy to me, but Big Willy was pretty cool in his portrayel of a lonely lonely man slowly going crazy.
Apparently this is like the 4th movie based on the book though, would be interesting to see how other directors interpreted it...

Not to be the nerd in the fairytale... but the correct strongbad quote is:
" Why don't you go outside and play or something ... NERD "
What? dont judge me.

i still have to go watch the movie, man, i'm gonna be peeved if i miss it on the big screen...
So i'll probably go visit the bright water commons today or tomorrow, school is back in session, so i don't have to bother with silly little children.

Just watched this and really enjoy it, though i have one question
No really, don't read this if you haven't seen the movie
Was killing Sam REALLY necessary?!
Couldn't they use some other device to further the plot line, or make the dog immune or something?!
Damn...

Look, it was necessary, imho.
So much is revealed in that scene before it happens, and yes, arguably it is important for character development. It's just:
I don't like it
When animals get hurt or killed, but it seems like it's becoming more of a trend, since people are so disconnected from human death

Really good movie, unlike most apocalyptic films this one is much more accessible, it feels like it could happen, which adds a bit to it.
and instead of gloomy dark ruined city that most movies go with, IAL went with bright scenes everywhere, almost all shot during the day- which made it really spookyish
also anyone catch the parrelles betwean 'Ledgend' as in Bob Marly and will smith
both died for what the believed in, and stuck with there beliefs which would be the ultimate cause of there death.
great film, awesome cinematography

Erm, blinky ,the -censored- -censored- because the movie is based on a book ... it would be silly if they just watered down the plot and left the -censored- to -censored- to the end. Plus its not the typical hero movie where the -censored- and the -censored- remain unscathed.
I think it was really well done. The bob marley theme was also very good and sincere.

Just came back from watching it. Freaked my wife a bit. And there was a woman in the theater that cried pretty loudly when the censored bit happened.
senorblinky
14th January 2008, 09:46 AM
Do you blame the poor woman for crying at the censored bit?
Man, now i feel a bit teary - however, you're right voicy, in the book the censored bit did happen, but it was dealt with quickly, in a couple of pages, it was used to develop character. But in the film, there was a visible relationship between censored and censored. I think it had to happen, and that's probably the best way for it to happen, but it still doesn't make me happy that it happened...

I must say, its the first time I needed tissues AND got a fright in the same movie. I got such a fright that I shouted out a bad word and almost fell off my chair (you know what scene I am talking about :p)

Decided to go watch it before it stops screening. Very decent, although not a classic. Will Smith is great as usual. Unfortunately the movie experience was ruined for me by a cinema full of schoolkids who apparently thought the movie was some sort of dark comedy, and laughed at pretty much anything and everything. That shall teach me to go for the main showing on a Saturday night...

My dear Rainy, i am sincerely disappointed that your expedition to the cinema was spoiled by those foul and beastly school children.
If i have any advice to offer, it would be to do what i do: Go to the dodgiest movie palace you can find, in my case it would be the Randburg Waterfron, now known as the Bright Water (very) Commons, go directly after work and in the middle of the weak.
The BWC still has fantastically big screens (better than Cresta still) and the sound hasn't gone to pot either. Plus, if you're not totally alone in the cinema, the one or two stragglers who are there won't give you problems.
Hell, i remember watching Spiderman III in its last week on the circuit. I got a seat RIGHT in the back, but i was alone, so i sat in the middle, lit up a few cigarettes and smoked to my joy, and i SCREAMED at that Peter Parker trash for being such a tard to MJ (YOU DANCE LIKE AN IDIOT YOU $%^&*) - it was probably one of my favourite cinematic experiences ever.
some movies are just better on the bigscreen, but other cinema goers really have the potential to spoil it for you.
Except when you go to watch a film like JACKASS. Then that cinema has to be packed!

I went to see a version of the Scottish play down in Braamfontein some years back. The set was designed using black bin liners and other bits of plastic. One of the witches drew a phallus in the whole hubble bubble toil and trouble part. All in all it was rubbish.
The school kids were bored and started talking and commenting through the whole thing.
The director came out at the end and shouted at every one - but what did he expect? It really was bad. And sorry for him but nobody got his interpretation.

I will certainly get plenty of flack for this but I must say that I think "I am Legend" was entertaining up to a point and that it all made me think of a Resident Evil remake starring Will Smith.
Albereth
28th January 2008, 10:53 PM
Don't worry about getting flack - you're entitled to your opinions. There always is a problem with movies that have the big reveal. Think of IT. The clown was freaky but the big hairy spider space alien was just dumb.
So yeah - when he was chasing after the dog it was tense - but the whole thing does go a bit RE at the end.
And welcome by the way

There is no guy up in the box - they are that lame - they employ two projectionists to run 10 cines (if that's even the plural ?!) So ja, it's safe to assume that as soon as you movie starts, he buggered off... HAHAHAHAHA - NOW I CAN SCREAM AT PARKER!!
