I see I'm a bit late, the thread has been derailed (ADD is the glue that binds us all)....

When I was in matric, my best friend was a guy called David Haynes (a Scotsman), 26 years old, working for Eskom (of all places).

Our mutual delight was the consumption of copious quantities of Captain Morgan's Spiced Gold. We'd clobber a bottle before we even went to the Commercial Hotel, in King William's Town, where we proceeded to deplete the bar's stocks of aforementioned beverage.

The Juke-Box received lots of our money, and Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" song was played ad-nauseum by both of us. We knew the words backwards & it became a ritual of ours. Arm-in-arm, we'd stop talking to whomever we'd been talking to & sing every single word until the song was over. We were not allowed to not sing the words, every single time. We played that song a lot every night.

On New Year's Day, at about 6 in the morning, after drinking Spiced Gold all night, we each made a nappy out of a white towel (we decided it wouldn't be true to form if we wore scants under the nappies, or any other clothing), and proceeded to direct the traffic at the busiest intersection in town. How we didn't get locked up I'll never know. Those days you'd get arrested and thrown in the slammer if the PO-lice even suspected you had been drinking. I don't think the motorists were too upset & quite a few were actually pissing themselves with laughter.

I miss the bugger, he went home to Scotland after his mother & brother were murdered on their farm in Stutterheim - I don't think he was enamoured of the local populace & decided that departure was the only course of action.

Footnote for Sunny Cash: Sunny says a true geek has to have seen all of the Star Wars episodes. David & I stocked up on the Spiced Gold & rented all of the Star Wars Movies & watched them one after the other, passing out many times - restarting the movie we had been watching when we passed out. Needless to say it took all weekend to watch them. We didn't care. If you really want to call yourself a geek, then you have to watch the Star Wars spin-off about the Ewoks...which we hired, too.
