This thread is not to show 80's music...but more to understand it.I not like the 80's "high energy" stuff so.. show us what good music spawned from that era , if any...

Post sum 80's stuff and proof me wrong... :p

The Cure weren't mainstream though, they where very much alternative.

Mainstream, well there was quite a list depending on your taste.
Bryan Adams, John Cougar Mellancamp (before he dropped the Cougar), Thompson Twins, Dire Straits, Human League, Talking Heads, Men at Work, Midnight Oil, Madness, R.E.M, REO Speedwagon, A-Ha....

the list goes on and on and on.

and here is a perfect 80's choon for you:

There is good music from every era and each era had its own unique sound and look.

The thing I didn't like about the 80's (besides pulled up sleeves on suit jackets) was the birth of the boy band...NKOTB, Backstreet Boys, and that band that gave birth to Robbie Williams...blegh (not Robbie Williams, the boy band concept).

The really big thing about the 80's songs is the memeories they are attached to for those middle aged amongst us. That Rick Astley song...damn, the memories it brings back are hectic. Probably the most exciting time of my life...and I use the word exciting in all its different facets.

and in keeping with the theme, here is another link to a classic 80's song. I am not saying if I like these songs or not, just that they where phenomena in the 80's.

 Tarzan Boy! I came across that video clip a short while back.. the good ol' days.

I love 80's music: Jennifer Rush, Roxette, The Bangles, Enya, Mike and the Mechanics, Richard Marx, Belinda Carlisle, Madonna, Alphaville, Cutting Crew, Heart, Berlin, OMD, Mr Mister, Wham! .... ag, the list is endless....

A lot of the good bands also came from the 70's and carried through to the 80's like.. ABBA :woot:

Some of the good ones are still around today.

Don't forget Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, AC/DC, Cat Stevens, The Animals, Elvis, Bread, The Who, Buddy Holly.

And there are brilliant performers from earler times. Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Patti Page.

Don't forget that Rock n Roll was born in the 50's. So I think the following link is fitting:

lol, metal really saw its main rise in the 80's didn't it?

Ac/DC, Metallica, Black Sabbath, slayer, carcass, megadeth, Aerosmith, juda priest, motley crue and (cringe) twisted sister.

Hehe...unfortunately (for some) it also saw the rise of the glam rock band ;)

Twisted Sister were cool in their own way. I had 'Come out and Play' on vinyl, with the gutter pop up cover, until my mother sold me LPs after I left Germany...

The 80s also saw the uprise of more extreme metal genres, represented by Slayer, Kreator, Metallica, Exodus, Forbidden, Venom, Bathory and similar groups. That then lead to the rise of Death Metal in the late 90s...

Oh, and by the way, if you talk Power Metal, talk Metal Church, Sanctuary/Nevermore, Iced Earth (up to 'Something Wicked'), Morgana Lefay and things like that. Dragonforce are not worthy to tie the shoelaces of those groups, nevermind call themselves 'Power Metal"...
