Third time in 2 months my house has had a nearby lightning strike.
This time it hit my electric fence. Huge shower of sparks, and it broke one of the strands.
I had unplugged my brand new cordless phone (to replace the previous one that was taken out by lightning) - but the base unit and the power brick got fried by a surge. Lost my server's monitor, and my wife's UPS is screwed.
*sigh*
I'm getting sick of this crap.

You should move to Cape Town. Here lightning is so rare, they hide under the beds when it happens.
Sorry to hear about the damage.

And to top it all off, my ADSL is dropping every 5 minutes. Grrr!
I think water got in somewhere it wasn't supposed to - like last time. Took ages to come right.

Last time [-]I[/-] my house got struck, I accidentally left my cordless phone base unit plugged in, so that and the adsl filter got fried. Fortunately I had a spare filter.
This time, I was conscientious enough to unplug the phones as well as the ADSL line, but the base unit got fried by a power surge, and it caused the unplugged ADSL filter to fry as well.
I can't win!
*sigh*
Oh well. Off to buy a few 1000VA UPS's tomorrow.

Last time I got struck,
Hey Tg, You should really be careful how you word this because when I first read it I thought you had gotten struck...which would explain all of that strange behaviour we have experienced from you lately. ;)
Shame man, that really is a nasty one. Thankfully we do not experience much lightning down here in P.E. but I know that often when I phone my mom in Jhb, then she can't talk because of the bad storms.
Hope you get everything sorted out soon (& at half price!) so that we can have you back on the field :)

Lets see ... 20m lightning rod installed = around 3500 bucks.
Na ... far too simple a solution ...

Ouch TG !!
Also had a modem & switch taken out by the very FIRST lightning strike of a storm - I always unplug the modem when lightning starts, so that was quite painful too.
Surely insurance covers lightning strikes though ?

Discovered another casualty - my gate motor :(
It runs off battery - which went flat this morning finally - discovered that the charger had fried. Fortunately it was easy to replace, and not too expensive.
Yes, I could claim from insurance - but the hassle I can do without, and considering I would lose my bonus :p
(Yeah, I get paid not to claim)

I, blindly and optimistically, keep EVERYTHING running in storms! Hell, sitting around looking at all the lights flash inside and outside keeps us entertained! No damage yet. Proof that there's no justice in this world, eh? Power to the simpletons!

Not equals is <> on some systems and != on others. :p
