Yea and I'm still working on that map packs thing. 16 maps for free and the quality of the work that has gone into them is great. We just need to convince SGS to host a server running them.

I completely concur with Nerdboy. Besides, I just started discovering SF to its fullest extent, and with the server nicely packed, I don't need EF right now :p

Every time I've checked that server, it doen't have anyone on it, so what's the point?

I battle to catch a SF game as it is.... :( :( :(

What's really cheesing me off though, is that now we have an SF server.... no-one playing, and EF server......no-one playing, 2 urban servers.....bothj playing the same map sometimes....ARRRGGG!, and one Rural server.......no-one playing....... for Fsk sakes.....

Re-applying the 1.22 patch sorted my problems out.

So, fresh install instructions:

Install Bf2
Install SF (If you have it)
Install Patch 1.22 full
Install EF
Install Patch 1.22 full again

Painful. (EF won't install without 1.2 patch)


Anyway, I enjoyed a couple of the games we played last night, but 2 of the maps suffer from serious jet whoring.
The jets should be reduced to the level where if you fart the thing should explode. Grr.

I might buy SF this month...but I really do need to first work on my BF2 skills...doesn't help to have all these games and not be able to actually play them well!
I think I must start investing about 18-20 hours a day into BF2 and then I should be quite good by the end of the month...wonder whats gonna happen to all the other things I 'm supposed to do...

I'm still undecided as to whether I like EF or not.
I definitely hate the jet aspect of it. It seems there are some players that CANNOT play bf2 unless it's in a jet. If you were in any kind of vehicle last night, you got bombed. Doesn't matter if it was a tank or a jeep.

I like the weapons though. The... p90 (is it?) for Euro AT is quite nice. The support weapon is also very cool. I also liked the sniper rifle (L9??? unlock thingy), even managed to get a couple of head shots into Bass. ;)

The one thing I like about SF, however, is the fact that there are no jets.

it depends... just go to www.bf2s.com and click wiki/weapons thingy... you get an in depth thing about how good each weapon is etc.. how many shots it takes to kill with any wep. and whatg unlocks you can get....

It is not just EF that suffers from jet whores. Some maps are just more sensitive to the minimum number of players. Last night we should have been playing on a 16 player map - that'd get rid of the jets. Hopefully when you have 16 a side there ought to be a good change that jet jockies would be evenly spread and that there would be enough of a threat to down them. There are plenty of anti air vehicles and sites.

I wasn't happy that someone decided that WrG wanted to be aircraft fodder last night. And that, to me, is more of an issue.

In hindsight what we REALLY should have done is start a map vote for Great Wall - the next map in the map cycle, and told all the guys that either we move on to another map (without aircraft), or leave (which happened anyway!)

I really enjoy the more open maps that are in EF - we actually had an enjoyable game the previous evening on that map when the guys left the jets and just played on the ground.

And Great Wall plays well as it has no jets ! :)

Edit: as it happenend I didn't have any issues downloading and installing EF - just had to figure out that the 1.22 patch needed to be re-applied ..

Problems with installing EF exist and they are all due to technical incompetence by EA. Things may have moved on slightly but I'll call it as I experienced it.

You need a EA account. Creating the EA account doesn't allow for underscores in your name. Not a problem for Albereth but Cullen_Doom was an issue. So the closest I could get was CullenDoom.

I had downloaded EF using albereth and the version I had was corrupted because EA had a problem with their Downloader. Their solution was upgrade the Downloader and download again. Right! I must give up about 4 hours waiting for that. And I needed a copy for my son. Nerdboy stepped up and offered his uncapped services. He trapped the download file but some idiot wants to ensure that you are entitled to download the file and checks that its one download on one machine - no sharing. So we say install and even that didn't want to work.

So I downloaded it again. I reinstalled everything because if you try to install EF on top of 1.22 you will get booted from server 26 because you have modified code. Try and redo a 1.22 incremental. It tells you it needs 1.21. I started a full 1.22 download from SGS which bombed at 69 MB. So full install. Just trying SF doesn't work either.

Okay - got it all going and then took the executables to my son's machine. Also did a complete reinstall from scratch. And then got messages about having to pay for the EF upgrade when I started it up. So back to the EA site via the Downloader. In the Downloader you can access the ability to change your nick. Basically you say CullenDoom is actually Cullen_Doom. So they don't allow you to create the account with the underscore but you can change it to have an underscore later. Idiots.

Well it was working yesterday afternoon. Don't know about today though.

It is such a waste of time and energy getting there but the maps are very pretty and the smoke one is particulary nice. Was it worth it? I'm there now so I am happy. But I just do not think that EA have any concept of testing and even their screen shots in the FAQ don't match the actual process screens. The Download service is quite often not available. And their distribution strategy makes no sense whatsoever especially as you validate your access as you start up the server - why bother with anything else prior to that.

Think about MS and SP2. They distributed CD Roms to anyone who wanted and urged you to pass it on. Sure, you need (are supposed to have) an authentic version of XP. It's not supposed to work if you aren't entitled. and EA should have taken that view. The next pack will be along soon and in as much as some are saying they won't get EF, some of those that did get EF won't be interested in the next pack. Pity - because the actual maps are good.

Seems you need to be running the Downloader when you play too.

I Downloaded the TOTALBF2 map packs. There are 18 maps in total. 2 did'nt work and only about 8 of them are really good. But they were FREE. I suppose that the downside is that any server you play on will be unranked cause EA wont recognise them as "official". If you not hunting points though them these should be a lot of fun.

I have an issue with the EA downloader. That crap thing doesn't do the auto login, although I always check the 'Remember me' box when logging in. After every reboot I have to log in manually.

Any ideas?

I think bf2 auths against the account server when it tries to load an EF map - cuz sometimes it boots me back to the menu (in single player) and tells me I need to buy the content, but if I try again, it loads.

Yeah, I have seen that as well, even when I wanted to play in Single Player. It's quite illogical, because if you hadn't installed EF, you wouldn't be able to start the map now, would you?

This whole auth system for the booster packs is crap. Make people enter their CD Key when they buy it, and then auth the CD Key against the EF content. But alas, all these arses and elbows must get confusing at some stage... ;)

You know, I find this all rather confusing. I've tried to play and have been given the whole 'you need to buy this' crap. If I load up the Downloader then it lets me in. Sort of assumption I had made that you needed it running. Now, I have also gone in without it running since then. Perhaps it does get funny and let you in the next time you try - basically if your validation times out you get the message (?) but if you try again you get lucky. Maybe the Downloader says 'Bzzt...You're good to go'.
