You have a point - it's a drawn out subject about interpretations etc.. but I think you can use this basic rule of thumb: If the abbreviation or acronym translates to something with a swear word in it, then don't use it.
Yes, it's petty. Yes, it's small minded - you can please some people some of the time, but there's no way you can please all people all of the time.
People need to realize that this site is here for everyone of different ages, different creeds, etc, so you can't expect everyone to find what you consider "normal behaviour" to be perfectly acceptable for everyone.
Understand that we're not trying to force anyone out or make anyone uncomfortable - we're trying to make it comfortable for everyone to be here. If people don't want to compromise then I guess this is not the place for them.

Well, categorically speaking, i think you've potentially opened another can of worms.
What is considered bad language? i mean, they use s*** in Egoli (as well as b****) and that is a family programme, does that mean i can say s*** and b*** here?
I am not trying to stir, and i've been a member of these forums for two years now without much reprimanding et al. my posts are tasteful (well... to a point, i suppose) and i do not make lewd insinuations (often)
So what, other than the obvious, constitutes as bad language?
Cause if you can ban a guy for swearing, technically, you can ban him for being rude, since that ALSO could influence the children shoulder surfing.
Then again, i think this whole mess of crap is unnecessary, since the WrGs KNOW tthe score and don't try to push the limits. Thank Goodness you have a group of adults on your hands, but i wonder what would happen if you mention that you might start treating them as kids.
Take it as you will, i'm jsut trying to be a friend here that went through exactly the same, over yonder, at him bud site. After all, i know TG very well, and TG knows me very well. Ons kan twee vuilgatte wees as ons die dag lus is, but we compromise when sharing the site.

I think we all need to be much more aware of what we say etc.
Remember habit formation is a nasty little thing. The more you type it here on the forum, the more likely you are to blurt out those nasties in a squad - and since we have a few younger members and ladies who often play, it is rather better to curb any form of swearing - written and oral.
I wouldn't say I don't ever swear, but I can honestly say that it's very few and far between that an 'ugly' word slips out. If I vloek like a sailor at home, the potential of me letting a really bad word out at work would be quite high. That is a very big no for me especially. So essentially, I try not to swear at all.
The kids always ask me at school what is wrong with swearing...which just proves how tolerance has allowed our society today to degenerate. There are such beautiful, far better descriptive words out there to use instead of 'ugly' ones. I for one really appreaciate TG's efforts to keep the site a much 'cleaner' and wholesome one. It shows good character.
I also appreciate the efforts of the members in our clan who keep the swearing to a minimum in squad. I must say that I don't like it - the swearing part.

Wife = English Major: Kak = s*** but just in afrikaans, so no. :p
I rate language by what I'd want to hear my kids saying. If I wouldn't want to hear it out of the mouth of a 3 year old, then it can't come out of mine. Having said that I'm no prude and take no offence to people using them around me (I do as well when the kids aren't about) But this is a publicly viewable forum, which warrants decorum.

This is another bone of contention (What an odd turn of phrase). If you have the 'family' audio channel switched on on DSTV, they still let through those particular words. It seriously grates my cheese.
I'm not a saint. I swear with the best of them. Do I want my kids to swear? No. Why? I don't want to hear those words coming out of my innocent little child's mouth. Does this make me a hypocrite? Yes. Do I care? No.

We all know what "bad words" are. Unlike most other language rules, we learn about swearwords and how to use them without any real study or classroom instruction. Even very young children know which words are naughty, although they don't always know exactly what those words mean.
But swearwords aren't quite as simple as they seem. They're paradoxical -- saying them is taboo in nearly every culture, but instead of avoiding them as with other taboos, people use them. Most associate swearing with being angry or frustrated, but people swear for a number of reasons and in a variety of situations. Swearing also serves multiple purposes in social interactions. Not only that, your brain treats swear words differently than it treats other words.
doobiwan
27th February 2008, 06:42 PM
They're exclamations used to express emotions that you would have a hard time putting into a grammatical sentence. But they do so by shock value alone.
A child is still learning and doesn't see the distinction, to the contrary, if it's naughty, it's seen as adult and a draw to kids, perpetuating the problem. If we as the adults accept saying "oh bother" or "Fridge Magnets" instead of "Oh f***", then it's no longer cool for the kids either.
I'm f***ing rambling . . . ;)

Sminty's had some tough times, but he was out of line.
What I'm amazed at is that somehow an argument that should have been solved between two adults, Flatspin and Albereth somehow manages to upset Sminty to the point that he leaves?
You have to ask yourself, was it really worth it?
Sometimes freedom of expression should be curtailed for the greater good..

Blinky, if your Mom threatened to wash your mouth out with soap when you said it, it's a bad word. ;)
My mom was actually quite cool about those kind of things, it's my gran that got a psycho and grabbed the bottle of Vim and washed my sisters mouth out with it for saying "Bliksem". Now i love my dear sis, so i hid my Grans false teeth for two days, so she had to get new ones. No one messes with my sister (except my mom and dad) but washing one's mouth out with VIM?! Damn, i feel guilty using that on a drain, it's so strong.
I did have ONE language incident with my folks back when i was in Std 5. I wasn't sure what the afrikaans word for "Pause" was, so i took a chance. Wrong choice + beating with a sambok = Blinky no swear in front of folks for the next 5 years.
I think we all need to be much more aware of what we say etc.
Remember habit formation is a nasty little thing.
The wonda is right, but being Queen, one can expect certain perks, like being right ALL THE TIME! Familiarity breeds contempt (that's the right phrase, isn't it)

This is what I don't get, everyones was just adding their two cents (no stress, most of us speak rubbish half the time) but ultimately it was between Flatty and Alb, and if you ask them about it they'll tell you, "no biggy" I'm sure. I don't get it why Sminty had to spin out like that and take a swing at peeps like Punky.
I have a feeling there are other issues on the go, stresses in his life we don't know about or realise the extent of.
Hopefully Sminty cools down and realises we really want him back here. There are fights and disagreements and we get the moerin with each other, back we usually shake and make up afterwards.

It would appear that I have sparked a row, and for this I apologize.
I was unaware that lewd acronyms would be viewed with an admonishing eye, therefore I felt slightly victimized at the time I was admonished by Albareth & told this was not a democracy. I have since learnt that Albareth was merely doing his job. Albareth, I apologize.
It did, at the time, strike me as strange that my acronyms were frowned upon, yet certain smilies were acceptable. I see this has been addressed.
I realize I may have, in the beginning, posted some things that were offensive to many WrG's, and this is what ultimately lead to my non-acceptance as a WrG. All things happend for a reason & I am now proud of the fact that I am a BUD, thanks to Senor Blinky.
I enjoy talking to you Geeks & there is definitely a collective base of knowledge here. I am new to the whole internet socializing concept, so it has taken me some time to learn what the protocols are & where I am allowed to be a hooligan & where I am not. I am not a hooligan by the way....:D
I have been impressed by the support you give your members as a community, especially in their hour of need. You guys are great & I would be proud to be friends with anyone of you (except that dodgy Skari & his chickens ;) ).
Just as I was quite perturbed about SGS's failure to clarify the rules, I was equally perturbed about certain things here. I now have all the rules, for all of my favourite hangouts, and I assure you that I think only of "fluffy bears" on these pages & refrain from any commentary that I wouldn't want my own children to hear (should the man upstairs decide I am responsible enough to have children).
I must say TG is a big man, and I have the utmost respect for what is trying to do here.
Now that I have finished , can we get on with it? :D

You know Skari, in your defence: You are not the only WrG that has potty-mouth when playing BF2.
I distinctly recall joining up with a whole squad of WrG's on the fly server one night, being amazed that this was actually a WrG squad (Geez...the BUDs don't even swear like that), and purposely checking the squad screen to make sure we didn't have anyone in the squad that was going to run off & tittle-tattle to the admins - luckily we didn't.
I don't care - it doesn't bug me. ATM I am trying to stop swearing at the most inopportune moments.
I think a rule-of-thumb should be certain that everyone in your squad is comfortable with the language & also to make sure there are no kids in the squad. We are adults...& sometimes it is fun to swear & carry on like hooligans . :gyes:
