OK, so it seems like you either get lucky, and set up VOIP and everything works as it should (happens an my PC all the time), or, more commonly, you run into grief at some stage.

So let's make a list of the known issues / workarounds, so we have the info in one place. Please feel free to add issues at any time - I'll come and consolidate as stuff gets added...
(Most of this stuff is shamelessly ripped from other threads :D)

ISSUES
1. Setup VOIP to be voice activated
2. People complain that your VOIP is muffled.
3. VOIP Keeps getting disabled
4. VOIP check box disabled (ie. unable to select)

SOLUTIONS
1. Edit "C:\Data\Battlefield 2\Profiles\"<your profile number>\Audio.con
Change AudioSettings.setVoipUsePushToTalk 1
to AudioSettings.setVoipUsePushToTalk 0

2. Don't suck/chew/lick microphone.

3. OK, have seen varying degrees of this on different PCs.
Have fixed it on one PC by exiting the game totally, going to Volume control -> Recording, checking that
Microphone is selected. Then on Playback, try unmuting the microphone (this might need to be added
to the list of controls)

4.1. Check that mic is working in windows -> Go into Sound Properties, Voice, Test Hardware and follow the
prompts.
4.2. Try switching between Hardware & Software sound mixing. (Thanks TG)

Thanks guys ... hope this will help..

VOip disabling is a server side issue. For some reason it gets dropped occasionally. I think it might be tied to server loading or bandwidth congestion rules.... will confirm

Hmmm askari - I don't know that the two are linked. ie. setting VOIP to not be activated by a key, and it becoming disabled after playing a round (might still be - this is to the best of my knowledge .. :))

I have seen the same thing happen to guys when we were playing a LAN game, but not trying to use voice activation - one PC kept on disabling VOIP totally - normally either at the end of a round, or during the round. We would then exit the game, check that mic is working in windows, go back into the game, set everything up, test ... yup - all OK ... play a round & BAM ! .. all settings lost again !!! :(

Check if the game is set to use software or hardware sound mixing. Try change the option.

My mic kept muting itself in windows, worked for a bit then muted. Constantly p************** me off (yes, I know that was a bit long :p)

Basically this unchecked (for some weird reason) the option 'Voip' in the actual BF2 game... And I couldn't reselect. This not only meant that I couldnt speak to others, if they spoke, i couldnt hear them... that REALLY sucked..

Solution: Dl'ed a driver for my soundcard :D

17mb, went at 0.5 KB a second... tooooo sloooooww.....

Here is my audio.con file contents, i am using the crappy AC97 rubbish card.

From: F:\Documents and Settings\%username%\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001

Audio.con

AudioSettings.setVoipEnabled 1
AudioSettings.setVoipPlaybackVolume 1
AudioSettings.setVoipCaptureVolume 1
AudioSettings.setVoipCaptureThreshold 0.079552
AudioSettings.setVoipBoostEnabled 1
AudioSettings.setVoipUsePushToTalk 0
AudioSettings.setProvider "hardware"
AudioSettings.setSoundQuality "Medium"
AudioSettings.setEffectsVolume 1
AudioSettings.setMusicVolume 0.102282
AudioSettings.setHelpVoiceVolume 0.352216
AudioSettings.setEnglishOnlyVoices 0
AudioSettings.setEnableEAX 0

If i change any of these settings using the game menu options, it buggers it up and i have to re-set them again.
i.e. If it keeps breaking, stay out of the game audio options.

When playing a clannie I will test before that voice activation works - other times it's just impractical because of background noises..

I'm getting quite deft an hitting a key when about to talk, so much so that I hit the key before having a loud cough - thereby deafening poor Sminty! ;)
I actually have to remember not to hit a key when talking to the wife!

Interisting thing in Vista ... The mic works in Windows .. but can't do the test in BF .. as soon as I do the test in BF2 .... the game gets very very laggy !

so .. motto .. never test mic in game ... test windows ... then play
