This reminds me of that ad where the sales motivational speaker compares them to wild dogs nabbing the elusive customer.

I didn't know whether to add another thread - TG can move this if required:

In:
C:\Documents and Settings\Stoke\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001\General.con

Replace 0001 with the profile you're playing with - 0002, 0003, 0004 ...
And - obviously - stoke should be your Windows Username !

Look for :
GeneralSettings.setServerFilter ""

Add Underneath:
GeneralSettings.addFavouriteServer "196.4.79.20" 29900 "-= SGS BF2 RANKED I Server =-"
GeneralSettings.addFavouriteServer "196.4.79.31" 29900 "-= SGS BF2 RANKED II URBAN Server =-"
GeneralSettings.addFavouriteServer "196.4.79.26" 29900 "-= SGS BF2 RANKED III Server =-"
GeneralSettings.addFavouriteServer "196.4.79.6" 29900 "-= SGS BF2 SPECIAL FORCES RANGED Server =-"
GeneralSettings.addFavouriteServer "196.4.79.28" 29900 "-= SGS BF2 RANKED URBAN 2/CLAN Server =-"

There's an option "AudioSettings.setVoipUsePushToTalk 1"

Change it to "AudioSettings.setVoipUsePushToTalk 0"

VOIP will kick in when the threshhold is reached [that mic tuning thing in the audio setup screens].

Bass

Ooohhh Stoke - Thanks a million - I'll try that VOIP thing which should then free up an extra mouse button !! :D

My tip for the day: (which everyone probably knows)

When in and APC, aim for enemy infantry feet - that way the splash takes them out in about 2 shots. Also when in a tank when firing the shell - aim for the feet or floor/wall/roof next to where they are hiding - normally only takes 1 shot if blast is close enough ...

@bass ... dude - don't use it if you've suddenly aquired the need to sneeze or cough ... it kinda pisses off the other squad members.
Well - if you have a mute'able mike then all is ok - I don't [yet].
But - yea - just shouting - Watchout doobie - behind you - is sooo easy and makes communicating a breeze.

Have done this & it seemed to work well - Sabre I played quite a bit with you this afternoon - how was comms from me ?

I played around with the threshold setting, but don't know if it made much difference ...

Nice not having to press a button to chat though (although there were a few coughs & sneezes that came through..) !!

Hey thisgeek - what I have found generally is that it's really a bad thing to move ones hand from the standard movement keys - haven't you done that to chat just as an enemy pops up in front of you and you can't find the right keys again in all the excitement !! Happened to me a lot !

I eventually mapped the talk button to the 4th mouse button which worked a lot better for me. :)

Bass
9th January 2006, 02:28 PM
Hmmmm - on this topic - one learns quite quickly that a good way to die is to run round & look for trouble. I generally am the more sneaky sort who would rather allow team-mates to rush past, soften up the opposition & die, and THEN come out and clean up, than being the one rush out & dying :D

So ... to get to the point - my view of how armour should be used, is that it should *discourage* enemy from spawning close by or coming to take the flag you're trying to cap while your buddies rush in and do the capturing.. Any comments on this (it doesn't seem very fair mowing down the slightly *special* players who insist on respawing there after a while) .. ? :D

i have a tendency to be a tank/apc magnet when i play Spec Ops... C4 makes me feel invincible coz the muti doctor told me so... thus i rush at tanks/apcs with the pleasure of a madman on a quest!

i do know i scare the begeezuz out of tank crews at times by the rush... :D

The funny thing is you dont have to be spec ops to do this... the guy in the tank has to just believe youre spec ops... so one special night (this doesnt happen often) I was running around in my fav medic's kit. A fellow in a tank comes rolling along... instead of running away trailing brown I ran towards the tank, initially I was just trying to hide next to the thing :D next up I hear the engine stop, the guy has hopped out to try and shoot me wif his nasty shotgun. I hopped in and backed over him. Nearly as funny as the time I ran up to an APC hopped in and started to drive away, then I thought to meself what the ell was that odd crick crick crick that I had heard. I swung the turret around and there was this poor sod standing there mit a spanner in his hand. Once again the impulsive left click... sorted. :)

[JEEP]

ROFFEL - and my personal fovourite - run up to man shooting from jeep thing...shoot man once in leg - man spins around - shoot im again - man spins around - shoot im again - man spins around and gets all erratic - man jumps out of jeep - you jump in jeep. Reverse.

Other jeep tricks [from guarding hotel] ...

See helicopter - shoot front of helicopter - right by the gunner's post = quick death.
See helicopter - shoot rear propeller thing - quick death.
See jeep coming - shoot straight away - long distance counts - shoot in 5 second bursts and 1/2 second pauses to prevent overheating. Shoot jeep window / front types.

See person shooting rocket at you - does not matter - you are dead if it hits properly, and any jump out and run strategies will never work - hit F2 and blow hiz brains out - you could just survive cos he dies before rocket hist and it goes skywards.

When blowing up a jeep - front wheel on side will kill it fastest - in windscreen will kill it fast.

[Engineer]

Engineer can be a hoot of note - run to front of enemy tank calmly taking flag - place mine - run to back of tank - place mine - run to corner ... shoot tank - tank looks for you ... see's you and moves - boooooom - snicker.

Of course - WG will be there placing C4 on the tank when it goes boom.

A tank will blow up if it rides over a mine even if the mine is in the middle of the tank tracks.

Do not place mines where your troops cannot see them - it's not worth the punishes, and you will be punished for that.

Place mines around enemy base tanks spawn points and hide. Tank will not blow up until enemy gets into it and the engine starts.

Throw mine onto roof of passing vehicle. Boom.

Shoot for the head with the Engineer's shotgun - take your time and aim well - it's a killer of note.

Use grenades to misdirect a tank/apc and give you time to place the mines.

Don't place mines till you have enough run.

Remember to repair stuff.

The most effective way is to use it like C4 - cept the problem is it doesn't stick.
So hop up onto the tank, and drop a mine right on top of the sucker. Then hightail it.

As soon as he moves... *BOOM*! :D

It's also effective if you dump one into the back of a jeep. Obviously, don't do this if teamies are near.

Hmmmm - very interesting !!!

I just wanted to check one more thing about mines - I have often seen enemy tanks/APC calmly drive over a mine I have *just* run out into the middle of the road (risking life & limb) to place. Do mines have some kind of arming delay ?

I was under the impression that the tank/APC tread/wheel must go over the mine for it to explode ?

Would the fact that I have (seconds before) been plastered all over the road by aforementioned tank/APC have anything to do with my mine not exploding ?

Thanks

B

i have also had the same example of mines not blowing up as soon as dropped in front of a tank... i got killed and then as usual some friendlies drove over the mine and i got the pleasure of a TK+punishment too. :(

I have seen an APC pushing one of my mines past me at pretty high speed.
I had the pleasure of a close up view of this happening while hiding in an alley.

The APC stopped - the mine settled onto the ground properly and it's middle piece like kinda clicked into place. Until that happens, it won't blow. Once the mine stops dead it'll arm itself.

WHICH MEANS ... You can slide a mine down an embankment - it'll arm itself on the bottom.

Of course - the APC then rode over the mine and killed me as well.

Bass
10th January 2006, 01:35 PM
Great - will try this out in SP - will also lie down and throw a mine & then see if I can see what you said about the mine arming Stoke ... Will then also drive nicely over (ie no tread on mine) it, & see if it explodes ...

Press TAB to bring up the scores, right click to enable your cursor, then at the top center of your screen is the map list. Click it to drop it down, and then click the lil box next to the map you want to vote for. Only click ONCE. No check mark or anything appears, but you will see you have initiated the vote.

If you want a faster game startup, go to your <BF2 install dir>\mods\bf2\Movies and rename all the .BIK files.

For eg, I've renamed all the files to whatever.bik.orig

The game will now start you at the account selection screen, and you don't have to go through the annoying EA logo and all that crap.

Or use this:

Note: needs .Net framework installed

TG

Quicker to just rename them :p

Bass
11th January 2006, 10:32 AM
OK .. played round briefly last night and found the following:

There is no indication of when the mine is armed or not (couldn't see anything anyway), but there is an arming delay. I could throw a mine down right in front of a tank, hop in the tank, and then drive over it happily ...
When reversing back it exploded.

The tread does not have to go over the mine for it to explode - the vehicle must just move over the mine (as Stoke said :))

Wasn't able to check exactly how long it takes for the mine to arm - must be at least 3 seconds or so ...

Ruslan74
11th January 2006, 10:51 AM
bugger... so dying is a must when dropping these mines when rushing tanks and APCs... :(

Bass
11th January 2006, 11:19 AM
Yup - free death included !! :)

And the worst part is that he could drive off before the mine arms anyways .. :(

Ruslan74
11th January 2006, 12:24 PM
yeah... Mr Murphy is all over the place in BF2... :p

TG
11th January 2006, 12:28 PM
That's why you should try drop it on top of the vehicle. This is easier said than done of course. ;)

Ruslan74
11th January 2006, 12:36 PM
the worst is your sprint meter runs dry just a yard from the tank and that extra second is all he needs to either back off and run you over or turn the turret on you. :(

TG
11th January 2006, 12:40 PM
Oh yeah. Happens to me alot.
I keep trying to keep some sprint in reserve, but it always runs out at the crucial moment.

Mines ... again ...
Last night I took out a tank and an apc with a single mine. They were next to each other, the tank rode over the mine, it was about in the middle of the tank.

The point of this post is that a mine is really blerry powerful.

Got me 3 kills for that one :p. YEA. They had us pinned down and i charged - threw the mine and was killed. Then - tick - tock - tick - tock - BOOOM - 3 kills. LOOOOOOOL.

Oh ... and ...

While laying mines in karkand - artillery blows them up, and if they're close together - chain effect - so - lay them far apart :p.

To remove enemy mines - throw a grenade on them / use a noob tube.

I tried to remove an enemy mine with a spanner crouching, and that didnt work.
I tried to remove a teamies mine with a spanner crouching, and that didnt work either.
I need to check this one again...

TG
11th January 2006, 02:40 PM
Removing mines with the spanner does work... I've done it before.
You can even remove claymores.

Ruslan74
11th January 2006, 02:53 PM
claymores with a spanner? sadly not while you are going up on a ladder... :(

doobiwan
12th January 2006, 08:20 AM
I usually remove claymores by running over them . . . . . :p

Did you see the 1.2 changes? Mines, C4, claymores etc, can be removed by anyone from the same class by pressing 'G'

TG
12th January 2006, 08:37 AM
Interesting... That will certainly change gameplay a bit.

Ruslan74
12th January 2006, 08:43 AM
but then you HAVE to approach the claymore from the other side and not from the front where the sensors/tripwires are.

i think...

TG

That would make sense, otherwise it's KABOOM!

Bass

rainy
13th January 2006, 08:22 AM
When you disarm a mine, can you at least pick it up and add it to your inventory? That would be cool - when I leave a position I don't have to leave the claymore behind...

stoke
13th January 2006, 01:52 PM
Okay - you can pickup a mine - well - your mine - and it does go back to your inventry - crouch wif spanner in hand - wait for double circle - leftclick - about 6 seconds later you gotit.

I still think that you cannot pickup somebody else's mine, but I could not find any last night to try.

You can pick up any mine you like... that's why it's useful to have an engineer around... of course tho, it's easier just to blow them up.

Pity you can't do that to C4 tho.

Bass
13th January 2006, 03:24 PM
Pity you can't do that to C4 tho.

Of course it would be pointless trying to remove C4, because even if the SO guy was on the other side of the map, Murphy would intervene, & he would choose just then to blow the C4 you were trying to defuse .. :)

One other interesting thing ... what happens to your mines when you die ? Do they vanish after a while ?
What happens to your C4 ? - as far as I can tell it vanishes, so why is there a difference ? :)

It would be quite useful to be able to blow your C4 after respawning ... at least for a few sconds (imagines map littered with C4  )

Ruslan74
14th January 2006, 12:25 AM
i think the mines or C4 disappears after you respawn as a different class and after around 5 mins if you died after planting them.

as an engineer you can only throw a max of 5 mines, any mines after the 5th will replace the previously deployed mines.

same with C4, when you plant some and resupply AND drop more then it just replaces them.

thank *** or else Rburley would C4 the whole map. :p

sss
19th January 2006, 12:25 PM
if you throw c4/mines there is quite a long period after death where they will still stay there, you can actually respawn get your pack back and detonate it.

I can second that AND if you can pick up the pack of a Spec ops you can detonate the C4 he planted.

[Gun-Grenading a Chopper]

I was on-top of TV station and an enemy chopper was nailing the flag just below - awesome hovering skills ...
I took my FS2000 and grenaded the chopper on the glass by the pilot ... 2 times and e'z dead.

So - I woz like - yea right - must have been badly damaged.

Then - in Alleyway I woz on the roof capturing the flag and the chopper spots me and tries to missile me - this involves going loooow - and I grenaded him again - 2x - dead. XEye saw this one as he spawned as I sent the first grenade.

It's the coolest feeling in the world ... of course - if the chopper had had a gunner .. would have been a cdifferent outcome.

Damn! I didn't know that!

So, provided you can haul ass back to where you died, pick up your old kit, you can still detonate your C4?
