View Full Version : Requesting voicy's brilliance: ADSL router on battery

Hi voicy, I require your assistance;

Turns out I am gonna get loadshedded every Monday, Wednesday and Friday night from 18:30 to 21:30. What I need is a power solution to keep my ADSL router alive during the three hour blackout.

My router is a Billion BiPAC 7300A with 12v DC power input.

What would be the best, cheapest option - I have heard about wiring DC routers to batteries. So what would I need to attach my router to it, and be able to recharge it (the battery, not the router) when there is power?

Thanks :D

The sheeding works like this. If you a M,W,F person you wil get shedded M,F this week and W next week.

So it wont be all 3 days in 1 week ;)

I would think that it would be easier and probably cheaper to just use a regular PC UPS?
one of them small ones would work just fine

Yeah. I use a 1000VA UPS to keep my 2x switches, ADSL router, firewall and cordless phones going. It lasts quite a long time. Killing off the firewall machine would probably make it last even longer.

I'm guessing it would probably keep a single modem going for a few hours.

I'm not so sure about that, I was reading on a thread on myADSL that a 600va UPS (which is probably about all I could afford) keeps a Billion router (and nothing else) going for 50 minutes.

Will check it out, though.

Well I was loaded sheded yesterday (I want to do exactly the same as you Kasyx) so I timed how long my 600va kept going with my Netgear DG384 router running. It lasted between 50 mintes to an hour.

we built a solution here at work, a deep cycle battery , a 800w inverter and an intelligent charger for 2k, the dude is using it at home to run his 74cm tv , dstv, lights and phone for over 8 hours without even running flat, bit of a manual procedure to swap over to it, but lots of power

Kaasie, you need to look at the AH (Amps per hour) rating of the oops (ups) you're using, for a small dsl router, you could probably get away with an old alarm system battery (size of a regular brick , and goes for about R130) along with a regular trinkle charger. (charges battery at low amps but device always runs off battery)

a 1000VA ups will give you 5.5Amps of power. This is plenty much.

I deal mostly with 300,000VA systems, but I'll look into this and try find you some commercial answers...

home madge devices work pretty well too.

Okay. Speak to me as if I am from another planet. Where would I find an alarm battery, what is a madge? What is a trinkle charger?

I don't speak electricity :(

I went there and I dont have a clue as to what he means, cept I know its not a trinkle charge but a trickle charger. Madge means made but with an added g :D
Kaasie get a cheap ass one from one of your suppliers, they are like R400 i think?

Vorty and I added an extra battery to our 400VA UPS's at the office and our PC's run for a lot longer now when the power goes out, we can even save our work b4 they die now. You can do that if you wants Kaasie. Get 1 elcheapo UPS, open it up check out the battery, usually a sealed lead acid 7AH (brick). Get another one just like it from your local security shop, connect it in parallel (+ to + and - to - or Red to Red and Black to Black). Do this with some thickish wire that can extend out of the UPS. Maybe me or vorty can send you some PICS of what we did on the morrow.

Please refrain from titling a thread in any way that could possibly inflate voicy's ego. When his head blows up, I am close enough to be in danger. Or could end up with gooey voicy head all over me

Thanks.

You can buy those alarm batteries from just about any security company that installs alarms. Ideally you would want to go to a company like ADI (tell them you are a dealer & your client needs a new battery) & you will get it for less than Voicy's suggested price.

You will probably find them having access to all the other little gadgets you require as well.
