Dude, i just got a heart attack, i thought you were taking your leave from the geeks, and that would be tragic!
On a completely different note WOW! Good man! Hearty Congratulations! I don't think anybody could FULLY appreciate that kind of commitment if they've never kicked that kind of addiction. I am truly and honestly proud of you and i wish i had your self restraint. Hell, i feel so inspired to quit myself now, but i sommer know it would only be words.
Go, be strong for the rest of us, and much kudos!

No, Bad Apple, it were I with the drinking problem ;), which I seem to have mastered - no sarky comments, dudes.
If only I could stop smoking, too. I am 16 days past the time I resolved to quit & smoking more than I ever did before, dang it.

I like having a smoke when I'm cruising in my C4 buggy, playing tunes I dig...
Now it seems that it diminishes the tedium of the long walks in WoW...
Has it's advantages, I suppose.
I have seen people with emphysemia - not pretty (that's what my old lady died of), but like you say - if I get hit by a bus tomorrow I'm going to wish I did a lot more things with my life. On the other hand if I live to the ripe old age of 60, I'm going to wish I didn't do the things I did.
Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Lots of support. Good luck. Try and avoid the things you did that made you smoke (like if you smoked while jogging, game more and jog less(ROFL)). If you can't avoid them, eat carrot sticks to keep your hands busy. Earl would tell you they don't light well easily, so you better just eat them. And if nothing else works, Zyban! Hear it gives you freaky dreams, but it helps 85% of people who take it to stop smoking.
Noodle
17th April 2008, 09:55 AM
Thanks apple :D all the smokers at the office are not impressed though now there is one less smoker to talk carp about ;)
@Wall - I smoked at work (often), when driving, on the way to and from the GYM and while I gamed. Man I'm screwed!
I did consider Zyban but figured I could do it on me ace :D
I just keep telling myself I'm not gonna let a little white stick control me, seems to be working so far :p

A mate of mine used to put a ciggie in his mouth and just keep it there without lighting it.
He just sucked on it like normal, without having it lit and it kept him busy... seemed to have helped.

All this talk of smoking is making me crave one! HAHAHAHAHA!
You know what smokers need if they want to quit? a sponsor! Like when you go to NA or AA meetings, maybe Smokers Anonymous meetings? once a week? with a sponsor you can call if it gets really bad?
Non-smokers, you might think i'm ridiculous, but as i smoker, i have dug out stompies out of a trashcan, just to have a drag or two. I've seen grown men and women, break down and cry, like little kids, because they can't have a skyf. I swear, it's one of the most difficult things in the history of the universe to kick.

Ten times more respect to you Oodles for doing this on willpower!
But isn't it funny though, as soon as you decide to stop something, like smoking or doing the diet thing... then it seems you are bombarded with the temptation around every corner.
Seems you are well on your way to kicking this habit, Oodles. You won't regret it :D

yeh its flippen hard for most people.
My dad smoked since he was 13 and said that when he turns 50 he'd stop. He stopped 2 weeks before his 50th and didn't light up a single ciggie for years to come. Only later on did he start again after finishing tasks i.e. building a roof / fence etc or when he goes to Namibia for his annual fishing trips. Other than that he doesnt smoke at all anymore.
I was lucky enough to stop before I turned 15. I used to smoke gunston plain back then, that my mate's older sister's bf bought for us to keep him in the good books. :meh:

well done on making it this far Noodle (and all the other ex-smokers).
I am afraid I can't comment on how hard it is to quit smoking as I have never smoked ever (seriaaas) However, I was subjected to my Mom's 2nd hand smoke for years and I cannot bear the thought of ever smelling like that *shudder*. My Mom quit cold turkey when our first Ginger Ninja was on the way, and never touched them again. Just a pity that after all the years I nagged her to quit all I had to say was "hi Ma, you're gonna be a granny". Had I known what it would take................

That's the thing noodie, i didn't plan on quitting so the mindset was all wrong.
I would never have had that "Last One!" and that's just setting yourself up to fail.
I'll quit eventually. Maybe a new years resolution.
i do smoke very little though. so far, had one ciggie today, and will most likely have another 3 to 5 tonight. So it's not like I smoke a pack a day.
It's when i go out and have a few drinks, that's another story all together.
I remember when Tita and Onyx were up here, visiting BioG - i smoked over 2 packs that day.
Noodle

Blinky, no amount of pressure will make you stop, its flippen hard to do so it must be a choice that you make. If you are loving it then you prolly wont stop soon, but im sure it will start sucking after a while and you will just stop.
I dont smoke much anymore, only when im out of town on business trips and when large amounts of alcohol are being consumed :D

12th August 2008, 09:40 AM
You're absolutely right RB.
I want to quit, and i have been planning on it for a while now, but as noodle said, i just need to hit that "Ok, it's go time moment" And even then i am sure i will have the odd cigar still. (like once in two months)
Noodle
12th August 2008, 09:56 AM
Blinks each person that I know that has "stopped" smoking and smoked the odd cigar has started up again... you know it's true.
Heck I wont even smoke hubbly in fear of starting up again.
Laka thing about smoking is when peeps annoy you, you just go, "oh I'm sorry, I'm just gonna step out for a smoke quick"

I agree with blinks 100%. I'm in the same boat, dont smoke much (about 5 a day) but when Im out and about things get hectic. I've also thought about quiting, and I can go without smoking 3 or 4 days easliy, but really at the end of the day I still enjoy the act of smoking, (an oral fixation of some kind Im sure) so I know I'm just setting myself up for faluire if I try quiting.
I used to really enjoy piss ups when I was in my early twenties but the booze started to simply taste crap and so I've left it. I only drink the odd cider now and again because its the only thing that tastes remotely decent, but even that is starting to taste like crap so I guess I'll stop drinking altogether soon. My point I'm trying to make is that I guess I'd quit smoking when the smokes start to taste like crap. Right now they dont :D
Noodle
19th August 2008, 09:35 AM
