The Kubra dam video makes me want to plug my joystick in again. I have no problems flying the plane, but the chopper does not go that well. I tend to barrel roll the chopper shortly after take-off which then end in tears. How does one keep it level? I have been able to fly by disabling left and right and using only the tail rudder for steering, but that seem like a lame way to fly a chopper for me. Any tips would be appreciated. I have flown other chopper simulators in the past without this many problems.

Hmm.. sounds like you have an issue with your joystick. Choppers don't barrel roll just sommer. If you leave your joystick alone and increase throttle, it should simply rise into the air -- tho you may need a touch of back pressure to counter the forward motion.
What joystick do you have?
If you have a force feedback joystick, this could be a slight issue - the slack in the center makes it difficult to fly choppers.

I have a old Logitech Wingman Force. If I leave it alone, and just move the throttle I go up and down just fine, but the slightest sideways touch and I start rolling. Trying to compensate by moving the joystick the other way just means I roll the other way round. So I normally end up swinging left and right a couple of times and then upside down, like that banana boat thing at the Pretoria and Easter shows. I can maybe play with the joystick settings a bit and see if it helps.

i cant help you with your joystick and flying probs coz even tho i may be a really good chopper pilot (well....i like to think so) i cant give you any tips coz i fly purely keyboard for all flying excursions
but what i think may be your problem is that your sensitivity may me to high also try changing your pitch and yaw opsions to give you more control

Bambi, do you fly keyboard and mouse, or keyboard only?

Are you using the Logitech Profiler software?
Maybe try create a profile for BF2 and adjust your sensitivities in there.

/me wipes tears from eyes......
I fly mouse + keyboard only, with invert mouse option turned on, so that it acts like it would with a joystick - i.e. mouse forward = stick forward. Plugged my joystick in once, and I was also doing that barrelroll thing, so packed the thing away promptly. I also seem to have the left and right swapped round on my joystick for some unknown reason. On the keyboard, and mouse this problem does not exist, so I'm not sure how to solve that one...

The left/right swap thing is easy to sort out.
When you're configuring the axis for the joystick in BF2, make sure that when you're say -- configuring 'roll left' you move the stick to the left. You don't need to configure 'roll right' in that case. -- Even though the axis entry may say 'X Axis' for both roll left and right, it SHOULD in fact say <- X Axis for roll left and -> X Axis for roll right.
In other words, it's important that you press the stick in the correct direction for the control you're configuring, because it takes LEFT X Axis and RIGHT X Axis, not just X Axis.
Damn, I hope what I said makes sense.

I also briefly had the left and right swapped on my joystick. I will even not mention the results or the language I used. :hurk:

SNIP!!!!

I hear you, and I thought that might be the case, so I did it again, and AGAIN, AND AGAIN, just to make sure that I pushed it left when I selected that direction to configure...... I'll give it another go, just to be sure that the joystick wasn't calibrated wrong or something....
Thanks TG.

@Darnit.
Don't know if this feature was added just recently, but take a look at the VERY bottom of this page, and related threads are shown there. One from Fivel, and one from Burley about flying.....

Err yeah, it is a new feature - forgot that I enabled it, and I usually don't scroll that far down.

Thanks for the great tips. I tried it for half an hour or so and my flying the chopper still stinks, but is already a lot better.

I use the logitech wireless joystick. I have the force feedback one but I also found that it would roll. I think the actual joystick has a problem in the twist handle sensitivity.
What I like about the wireless one is that it has a very firm centering spring so you always know where you are relative to centre. I haven't made any adjustments whatsoever and it is mostly fine right out of the box. Not saying perfect - but fine enough. I don't fly enough to justify the homework.

I found that I had to whack the control sensitivity up to maximum, and then use the logitech profiler software to max it there as well.
I've tried flying choppers with mouse/kb config since I got my new mouse - I seem to be better at it now :p

i used to use the keyboard and loved it, in vietnam and desert combat , and in bf2 i switched frmo keybaord to 'joystick and keyboard' that rocks
