Lol... ok here goes. We had a big dicussion about this at work.
This was a fake vid that was used in an advertising campaign for blue tooth headsets.
Why it doesnt work.
Waves have been accused of being dangerous because of 2 reasons.
#1: Heat generation
#2: Radiation side effects.
#1: The only way a wave can induce heat is via dipole ossilation. This is where the molecules are made to vibrate causing friction and therefore heat, this is how a microwave works. Problem is waves dont do this out the box. A microwave uses something called a magnetron to very quickly switch the polarity of the wave, this inturn messes with the molecules causing them to jump up and down. Without a magnetron or the likes, no heat will be induced. Also, it works best in fluids and is less effective on solids.
#2:
The big one. RADIATION!!! AARGHH. One on the most mis understood phenominom around. Everything emits radiation, hell without it you wont be able to see anything. But there are 2 types of radiation, ionizing and non ionizing. Ionizing radiation is the type that will kick your ass, it is strong enough to alter the structure of molecules by stripping off an electron. Thing is if you look at the radio spectrum, ionizing radiation only occurs waaay up on the list. These are your x-rays and gamma rays. From the bottom of the list it goes (might be slightly out since just typing this off the top of my head)
Long Radio Waves
Radio Waves (AM)
Radio Waves (FM)
Microwaves
Infra Read
Color spectrum
Ultra Violet
XRays
Gamma rays.
Now only X-rays and Gammas emit ionizing radiation.
Note #2 does not allegedly pop corn, #1 can only do that.
And that is the rough slappy explanation... hmm ...actually looks more like an argument for safe microwaved food than cell phones.
Anyways...

All I say is these days people jump to conclusionas and believe things without being in complete posession of the facts. Now ask yourself what is more effort, verifying something before believing it, or living your life in fear of something that may or may not be true and fuelling paranoia. If you dont believe me about the popcorn test, hop on over to Snopes.com They have verified it is fake.
You see there is an inherint fear in things we cannot see or explain (yes this is straight out of psyc). People need tangibles. If there are none, we clamp onto heuristics from things we have seen on TV, et al and the rumors start. Plus to boot there are people out there who put a lot of effort into making fools out of people with things like this popcorn gag. If you want someone to believe a lie, dont lie, give them a half truth.
Skary doesnt want to hold his cell phone on his nuts cause the radiation will throw clorine in his gene pool. But I have not yet met anyone who can explain to me what radiation is or how it works, yet it gets blamed for a lot these days. Most people are only aware of the dangerous type, and therefore clamp onto the cell phones are bad.
The radiation emitted from radio frequencies is non ionizing and can transfer heat 10mm into skin. Sunlight, fire and lightbulbs emit enough radiation to induce cancers, etc and are far more dangerous than radio emitions. But you not scared of light bulbs or the sun?
Like I say, want someone to believe a lie, tell em a half truth

But comfort factors aside you still wouldnt want one strapped to your head for 12 hours would you?
Stool
7th August 2008, 06:27 AM
the simple answer is that there is no stats to say cellphones are the cause of certain medical ailments, it simply just doesnt happen often enough. law of averages says you will be fine.
eg. compare cellphone stats to the stats of cigarette smokers getting cancer and you get a distinct difference in numbers that warrants all the medical investigation that went into smoking.
if anything skari should rather look into quitting smoking?
ps. as far as the heat goes it's my educated guess that when you use the phone then an extra circuit called the radio is turned on that isn't on during standby. radio needs to talk to tower and emits the Electro Magnetic fields to get the job done.
Now any circuit being used gives of heat energy and since a cellphone is so compact that extra heat induced by a call needs to go somewhere. A corded telephone wont let you experience the same heat because all the hardware is not in the handset (only speaker and mic in handset) and it doesn't use a radio to communicate with the switchboard/panel.

By observation ONLY:
Radio Waves generate electricity when they collide with metallic substances.
e.g. An aerial.
Now ... we have a certain quantity of substances in our body, that are capable of transmitting electricity. These are part of our nervous system.
So, I can conclude (60%) that radio waves produce "electrical noise" in our nervous system. The effect of the noise is not clear though.

Radio Waves Blast Bacteria in Fruit Juice
Radio waves show new promise as a powerful way to zap bacteria in fruit juice. Using RFEF, or radio frequency electric fields, as a pasteurization technique isn't a new idea. However, ARS scientists at the Eastern Regional Research Center, Wyndmoor, Pa., may be the first to successfully inactivate a bacterium in fruit juice using radio waves and moderate heat.
For their experiments, the scientists introduced--into apple juice--a harmless form of Escherichia coli known as E. coli K12. This microbe mimics the behavior of its pathogenic foodborne cousin, E. coli O157:H7. They reduced the E. coli K12 by 99.9 percent by exposing the juice to radio frequencies and moderate heat of about 122 degrees F. The researchers expect that, with further development, the treatment will meet the required 99.999 percent kill rate that today's heat pasteurization provides.
Processors of fruit juices, vegetable juices, and liquid egg products could benefit from a pasteurization treatment that doesn't change product flavor or nutritional value.

Err yeah, if they design a device for a purpose then sure you can prolly nuke bugs out of milk.
A microwave is designed to use waves to cook food. And it does a pretty good job.
Also you mentioned that when it hit a metalic substance it converts to electricity. As far as I am aware I dont have any metalic alrials in my body.
(not to sure how this affects Mikes prince Albert.)
The radio waves in a cell are less dangerous than sunlight or lightbulbs.

Thats is where you are wrong. There are people dedicating their lives to trying to debunk cell phone safety, and so far they cant prove a thing, and they are REALLY trying hard.
Fact is, we have had these things for over a decade now, and there is not one reported case of ailement. If it were a danger, then it would effect everyone the same since we are all physiologically the same. But the number of people with brain cancer, or any cancer, or induced mental retardation vs the number of people with cell phone is statisticly insignificant enough for me to prove there is no danger. Plus the science says it is completely improbable. Plus the fact that other more impeding dangers (like the sun and lighbulbs) are moot points in day to day life, tells me that this is more hype than anything else.
Hell your toaster is more radioactive than a cell phone, yet no one hesitates to pop some bread in and flash it up and guzzle it down. You may as well chew on a uranium core :)
Speaking of which, if any of you have dentures from the 80's and early 90's then consider changing them, cause they used depleted uranium to mimic the efloresense in real teeth under ultraviolet light, except this did cause cancer and death.

The chances of someone developing cancer on that side of his head vs the number of people who havent by using cellphones classifies it as coincidence.
You would have thought that after this many years there would be hundreds even thousands of these okes running around.
Then you still cant discount other more probable factors:
He uses a dodgy chemical to clean his pillow cases.
He works as a doctor in radiology

Seeing as how 10 year olds struggle to walk and breathe at the same time I don't think you will have problems with them answering three phones at once either.
The problem comes in where you allow three ten year olds (who also have cell phones) to spend time together. They are guaranteed to nuke something. The only option I can see here is that ten year old chillen should be kept separate from one another in large padded rooms.

This is simply because there has not been enough time passing to study long term effects.
Cellphones only became large scale commercially available in 97-99, before that only some households had 1.
I believe we'll start seeing long term (less aggressive) effects in the next 2 years popping up due to prolonged and more condensed exposure to these devices.

ohohohoh.. and here is a cracker:
A study conducted in Sweden have determined that there is a link between cancer and cell phone use. You see according to them these special waves cell phones use are called radio frequency waves (yes... like your basic radio that has been delivering tunes to your house for decades) or the more technical "RF" waves at high amplification (not like a cell phone... very low amplification) could possiby induce something they refer to as "heat" (you know, like when the sun warms you up) into biological material (Skary's ear). This "heat" can heat things up and effectively "cook" stuff (fortunately we have this thing called a nervous system that alerts us to any surrepticous cooking that might be going on in our body we dont know about). (makes you wander why you blow dry you hair everyday???) So, the researcher "propose" a couple of things you can do to mitigate these effects. One of them being buy a blooteeth hedset.
#1: On what planet does a researcher offer up advice. They research number, not come up with solutions.
#2: I find it strangely ironic that you can escape these "RF" waves, by strapping a blooteeth hedset on... which is... wait for it... RF TECHNOLOGY!!!
What a load of bollocks. And guess who sponsors the research. Well I dont know but I bet they got shares in the blooteef hedset companies. Now you got a gabazillion paranoid tits running out buying blooftoof devices to escape the "RF" devils.

Recent studies and lawsuits have raised the specter of fears of brain cancer from cell phone usage. The fear may however be exaggerated, as there have been very few studies that equivocally link the two.
Still, people are worried. The reason is that cell phones produce electromagnetic radiation which penetrates the brain a short distance from the phone's antenna. But electromagnetic radiation from cell phones is different from the ionizing radiation from, say, an X-ray or a hunk of uranium, which damages DNA and is clearly linked to cancer.

As I can remember, you need about 4kg of "mass" to absorb 1 Watt of radiation. Your cellphone transmit at about 250mWatt. That is 0.25 Watt, thus if your head is smaller than 1Kg you might suffer some long-term effects from over-exposure of cellphone signals.
Please note, that a cellphone does not always transmit at full power and that frequency (800mHz vs. 1800MHz) does have a huge impact.
BUT contrary to this information, I do believe some people have already been affected by their cellphones! By reading this thread you can actually recognise them and they should never - ever - ever - EVER again be associated with the MAN-thread!
