What level are you guys. I am level 7 and arch-mage. It is funny how in this game it is actually better for the most part to try not to level up. I am kind of sorry I did not pick a skills mix at the start that would have leveled me even slower. It would have been nice to have swords and healing as secondaries instead, so unfortunately a serious fight at the moment means I start creeping up to the next level. :D

I am a level 10, and completely agree with you. I cannot raise my willpower modifier because it means I level up too quickly.
On the other hand, If you like being a level 35 with all skills 100... well... You know... :D

At least this means that you can't build yourself an uber character that walks everything on the world like in Morrowind, because in Oblivion the difficulty adapts to your level...

Technically, you can... You can enchant items to give yourself 120% Chameleon (ie, nobody can ever see you, even if you're attacking them), get 99% shield or something etc etc...
Still, oblivion is better than Morro in that way..

Yes, I remebered I had a cape in Morrowind that healed me all the time. Made it very hard to die.

Lol..
In this, once access to the Arcane University has been granted and you can make spells, a few things become quite pointless...
Ie, The weight of items, as you can make 15 of the same spell, that all give you feather 100 for 120 seconds, and it stacks. So: No more leaving things in dungeons...
The spellmaking is actually incredibly powerful and handy, as demonstrated: instead of just fireball 100pts on target, fireball 50pts on target with 100% weakness to fire and voila, a cheaper spell that does the same.
Taking that a step further, if you make a spell that does 5 damage over 20 seconds (ie, 5 damage per second for 20 seconds), it still costs less than a 100pt for 1 second spell. Then, add weakness to fire 100% for 20 seconds. Voila, 10 damage/second for 20 seconds! Still cheaper than A) a spell that Does 10 damage/sec 20secs, and B) a spell that does 200 damage 1nce off!

'scuze my ignorance (since I still don't have this game) - why's it a bad thing to level up quickly?

The creeps (including monsters, NPCs, Guards etc etc) Are all based on your level.
So, in a distorted way, a guard will always be, say, 15 levels above you. This means on level 1, guards are level 15, level two, 16 etc...
This means if you level too quickly (or rather, don't get the +5 modifiers for your skills), the enemies become too difficult to kill.
A +5 Modifier is gained when you level a skill up ten times (the governing attribute of that skill can get +5 added to it when you level up). This is useful to stop, say, a char. with athletics as a major skill from autotraining it and becoming far too 'powerful' too soon, when only his athletics skill has increased (ie, no combat skills). This means that although creeps get +to combat skills, you don't, and thus you can't kill the creeps.
Phew... that should have been in a thread of it's own!

im level 25 but technically should be over level 30 coz u see i just havnt rested so i dont level up. i find that when u play on like level 7 it makes the game quite plain as you never find really cool or good items like i found a ring of perfection that gives +10 to all stats YIPPIE! and you can make WAY more money by selling the armour that the enimies give you when its for instance glass or deadric instead of chainmail.

btw you cant feather i think more than 255 points of weight nad yuo cant get more than 85 armour so its VERY hard to become invincable in oblivion

Ahum... I've had more... I think... 0_o
Then again, it depends on what you like. I like having magic items as rare, not as basic.. So that I don't like.
EDIT: Here's what I meant:
I dont like seeing a crab, killing it and getting ebony armour or a mace +10000000 fire damage type thing
in my game at the moment, I can find magic items, but they're quite rare, and I like it that way.

Nice progress Bambi. Sounds like you have basically finished the game.
I am not saying I do not want to level up at all, I am just leveling slowly and carefully. And after selling stuff for one gold each for a while, I decided to "skip" the whole gold issue. I do not really buy much, but have enough gold to buy anything on offer. I have spent enough time collecting gold in GW in my opinion to last me a while. I know I will only see glass armor etc. when I reach level 20, but I am willing to wait a bit for that.
