hallo all

have a little problem and i'm hoping u can help me.

I am on the allucaneat account, but they r ending that service at the end of May. si now i need a new ISP. i have considerd getting a 3gig IS account. If i understand correctly u get 3 gig local/international and 27 extra gigs local. (am i right?)

My questionis this however: how are the pings in BF2 with an IS account? If any of u use an IS account to play BF2 on, would u please advise me :)

thanx in advance

Howdy Paragon.

I have an IS uncapped account on a 512 ADSL line. Not sure about the 3Gb/2727Gb split as you describe it. Check out www.is.co.za, and see if you can find anything on their website.

Pings on local are okay - anything from 60 - 120, depending on the time of day, and number of peeps on the server.

If you try international sites, you're worse off than on a Telkom ISP account, as the link is via satellite. I get nothing less than 600-700 overseas, whereas when I was on the Telkom ISP, I used to get 400. Not much of a difference, but still a diff none the less. I understand that you can get ADSL with a Fibre backbone instead of the Satellite link (stoke has that I think), but then you're paying something like R5,000 a month.

I have been trying different accounts just lately, I have thus far experimented with. Wireless through PENET. Shocking latency with pings ranging from 70ms through to 1100ms No good for gaming. UUnet. Pings are better at 70-80ms although over month end the pings were between 200-700ms for two days the 25th and 26th I phoned UUnet and they said a lot of bussiness ran on their system adn such pings were to be expected over Month end. :( Lekka service. So my current SAIX based axxess account is still the best at 28- 35 ms. Its just capped and quite expensive. I suppose the adage "You get what you pay for" holds true. I will be trying a IS uncapped bussiness in the next week or two ( as soon as they get their router to me). Thats prolly a little late to help you so on that score so I suggest you ask Nerdboy about the IS accounts. I know he is on an uncapped account.

thanx all. if what nerdboy (thanx nerdboy :D ) says holds true, then pings are slightly worse with IS than saix. The problem is I only about R700 a month. I play mainly BF2 and GW so i need a large cap (BF2 ;) ). Anyone else on an IS account for compares? Is there a large diiference between the pings in the day and the pings after 5pm with IS?

thanx again all :p

I'm with Web Africa - they have a R75/Gb prepaid option that is quite good as anything you don't use this month rolls over to next month. So 4GB costs R300. Pings to SGS are 20-30 ms (although I think that is more dependant on you distance to the exchange)...

I am with saix, quite empensive but well worth it. I am suposed to have only 3g, however i use about between 20 and 90g a month and jet have to be capped. I have two accounts, when they had the reporting for when i get capped i can just switch over. They stopped the reporting and the capping with it. Since then i've not once had to switch over.

Dunno what the story is but i have no compaints. Works out around 900 a month with two accounts. I am going to switch over to 1m line next month, no point in paying for an exstra account if i dont use it.

I got 3GB SAIX, I use about 20-30GB per month never been capped. Pings 40-90 ms but as bass said it has more to do with distance from exchange. I often play on the <WP> clan server (washington based) and get about 400 ping. Not too bad i suppose. Oh yes i pay R249

You'd be better off posting this at www.mybroadband.co.za for a quick answer.
I've never tried to play on the work's IS line and use AYCE [10GB] at home.
I'll would log into work quickly and do a ping to saix.co.za on that line but saix.co.za is not the same hub where the gameservers are kept, so it does not mean much.

[edit]Tried to log on ... seems somebody's raping the 1024 line ... response is too bad to use a remote desktop session. Damn morons who insist on having watched a tv series before it shows on TV.

I suspect the satellite thing will be very bad for playing GuildWars or any other international games.
