View Full Version : A technical question for PhPBB & other Board Admininstrators

Let us assume I am a member of another guild that is running phpBB (version unknown).

I login, as one normally does, ticking Login Me in Automatically on Each Visit, getting some asinine question like, "Are you a Human?", and then:

1. I see I am logged in, sometimes.
2. Some days I can browse the forums (guild only), and somedays I can only access the public face of the site.
3. Some days it is worse than others
4. Some days I can actually post, although I have to relog in on posting.
5. Other days there is not a damn I can login at all

My original account was deleted in a bid to solve this, yet the problem persists in the new account. I have never received a confirmation email with the activation of either account. I have used a Yahoo account for my email address.

I have been speaking to the officers & administrators in a bid to resolve this problem and I get stupid questions like, "How come it is only happening to you?"

My standard answer is, "I don't frikkin know, I am not the site administrator!"

I do not have this problem with the Geek site & every time I reload Windows I have to use the lost password retrieval feature, proving that my system is running properly and that my browser is capable of holding a cookies for an indefinite period of time.

Firefox remembers all the passwords I have told it to remember for ALL the other sites I use & all I do is click "Submit". It even remembers the password for the offending site & whether I use this, or enter it manually, the erratic situation persists.

I have even used the "delete all board cookies" feature on the site to no avail

I know that we have a high level of expertise in the Geeks & trust that one of you bright sparks will resolve this issue for me so I can go back to the site administrators & tell them how to fix their problem because they, either:

a) Don't have the required levels of expertise to fix the problem

or

b) Couldn't give a damn

It's a known (stupid) problem with phpbb, one of the reasons I got rid of it.
It mainly affects people like us that are forced to use a transparent proxy farm where your IP address changes on every request, thereby confusing the stupid software.

IIRC, there was a filter setting in the admin side of the software where it could check a user's IP address for requests. By default the filter was 255.255.255.0, but to allow for ZA users it should be set to 255.255.0.0 or even 255.0.0.0. This reduces security a bit, because there is now a wider range of IPs allowed that could potentially spoof your connection. No biggie tho.

vBulletin does it properly. :p
(One of the reasons why I pay for the software)
