Read about it here (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/705/705484p1.html) and grab the teaser trailer here. (http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/801/801849/vids_1.html)

"Through the eyes of four Allied soldiers, Call of Duty 3 brings players closer to the fury of combat as they fight through the Normandy Breakout, the harrowing offensive that liberated Paris and changed the fate of the world. Developed by Treyarch, Call of Duty 3 is the follow up to the #1 next-generation game and is scheduled for a 2006 release."

Are they killing off a PC classic or merely converting it to the next gaming standard?

Blah blah blah... Halo 2 was supposed to be Xbox only as well. Oh look - now they make it for PC. Vista required, but let's be honest - everyone will have it in time.

They will never be able to kill off the PC. There's too much there in terms of hardware to give it a miss. Consoles wouldn't be where they are today without the PC's enormous hardware progression over the last years. I don't want to get into a console vs. PC rant, but I see no point in trying to kill one of them off. Especially nowadays, that developing cross-platform has become easier than ever. Why would you want to kill a strong and (reasonably) healthy market?

*Sigh* This same discussion comes up every time a new gen of Consoles comes up. It happened with the PSone, PS2, Xbox, all of them.

PC's won't die, they're less swish at the moment because mass market consoles have caught up, after 5 years. But as soon as tech starts rolling along again (Physics cards for example) the Consoles will start to be left behind again and the relevance of PC's will be felt again.

One less WW2 game is a good thing in my book :p

Fictitious wars are one thing, but games that glorify one of the most heinous moments in history, I dunno, something always niggles me about it.

But it's probably just me, I'll go back to Monkey island now thanks . . . ;)

i love em, i wrote a longish post about war and how they bad , but at the same time <and here is the condesed version> they cellerbrate this kinda of awesome brotherhood amoungst man, and some of the 'emotions' that are envolved are pretty pure and loving and unbeleavably amzing,. but yes war is bad and grim and horific if only we could have this brotherly love all the time word would be better...

Some new info (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=65660) out on this :

US magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly has revealed some interesting new details about Call of Duty 3 - including news that it'll feature a multiplayer mode for up to 24 players.

As detailed on the Xbox.com forums, CoD 3 will offer single or splitscreen multiplayer, and a new 'War' mode. Axis and allied teams will battle for strategic locations and vehicles, and you'll earn new abilities as you earn points - for example, scouts will only be able to call up a couple of artillery barrages at first, but as they gain more experience they can order more sustained attacks.

Gameplay changes will affect the way you do stuff like planting bombs - there's no more plain old pressing of the A button, you've got to go through the proper motions now. You might find yourself attempting to row a boat whilst simultaneously firing at your enemies, and you can expect a bit of hand-to-hand combat too. They're getting rid of the load times between levels, rather neatly.

As for the visuals, characters are said to move more realistically, and environments feature more textures and shaders. There are lots of nifty little improvements planned, such as foliage which remains flat after you've walked over it, grenades that scorch the ground, and destructible cover. You'll be able to look all around you, since windows won't be boarded up, and different surfaces - such as grass, steel, wood and so on - will react differently, and realistically, to bullets.

Call of Duty 3 is out later this year on PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360 and Wii.

Please note the "funny" parts of the press release in bold. :p

Hmm. I don't like WW2 games (except BF1942) but it's very interesting to see the how the platforms compare.

From Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=66002), i like this :

The first - and most obvious - improvement is the use of a new 3D modelling technique borrowed from NASA that makes light work of rendering characters to incredible levels of detail. Essentially everything from (high-end scale models of) tanks, to weapons and actors can be stood in a 'pool of lasers' and scanned in to automatically create a 3D model which goes towards recreating everything in minute detail with minimal effort. Previously tough-to-replicate items like the kinks and folds in uniform cloth and minor details on vehicles and weapons can now be shown off exactly like real life - and the results are indeed impressive.

Plus this added ET input into the multiplayer component of the game :

Multiplayer wasn't shown off (unlike the video shown to our US contemporaries), but the promise is of 24-player support in the next-gen consoles, with various character classes to choose from. For example, Light and Heavy Assault gunners come armed with anti-personnel mines, Medics can bring back stricken squad mates and provide medi kits, Scouts help call in precision artillery strikes, Riflemen can fire off rifle grenades, while Support and Anti-Armour Support provide ammo drops. Points can be scored not only for successful kills, but carrying out your duties effectively too. The modes include Team Battle, Capture the Flag, War, Headquarters, and a single flag CTF, while the beefed up presence of vehicles includes side-car motorcycles (woo!) and our old friend the tank, ensuring that players can choose to be the driver, gunner or mere passenger.

maybe this will be worth a buy afterall. :)

/me ponders ...
Now why would NASA need to emulate things in super high rich detail exactly ?

To model life sized extra terrestrial blow up spousal replacements for deep space voyages. Duh! ;)

Seriously though, probably to be able to run simulations on scale models.

it was all a fabricated scene to discourage the Russians and to fool the world.

Rubbish. It is reality. They really did land on the moon. They didn't say which moon.

Anyways ... didn't the russians crash into the moon ... technically making them the first ones there ?

According to the NAG E3 supplement, COD3 will be released for PC as well.

Ruslan74

mmmm... NAG is wrong. The console versions are being made by another developer, not the same one that did the PC version.

hmmmmm.
rumors of COD4, not set in WW2 but in modern combat.

"A reliable source close to the Call of Duty development teams has revealed not only the existence of Call of Duty 4, but vital details surrounding the game as well, including the fact that it will be based on modern combat.

According to our source, Call of Duty 4 will be developed by Infinity Ward, the developer behind the first and second installments. The three-way deal established between Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Activision states that Infinity Ward will develop all even numbered titles while Treyarch develops the odd numbered games, such as Call of Duty 3. Treyarch did develop Call of Duty 2: Big Red One as well, however.

As aforementioned, Call of Duty 4 is said to step away from the war torn locales of World War II, instead focusing on the battlefields of present day. It is unknown if it will take the same path as Electronic Arts’ Battlefield franchise, placing the spotlight on the Middle East.

The source compared Call of Duty 4’s technical achievements to other games saying that while most shooters have two or three critical points on the head, Call of Duty 4 has 16, saying that you can shoot the side of an opponent’s helmet to make it spin on their head, or knock the helmet clean off. Supposedly you will even be able to shoot an enemy’s ear off.

Although Call of Duty’s single player has always been a mainstay of the franchise, the multiplayer is certainly something to write home about. Our source has said that there have been multiplayer bouts with 54 players. PC gamers will be happy to know that they will be able to join the action once again, as Infinity Ward is supposed to be bringing Call of Duty 4 to the PC as well as consoles. Call of Duty 3 is only available on consoles and eventually the PSP."
