LOS ANGELES--We got our hands on Battlefield 2142 at E3, with senior producer Marcus Nilsson himself giving us a tour of what's new in the latest game in the incredibly popular Battlefield series. If you haven't heard yet, Battlefield 2142 takes place in the future, and it pits the American-European Alliance against the Pan Asian Coalition for the battle for territory after a new ice age renders most of the planet uninhabitable.

Of course, developer DICE and publisher EA are showing off the new Titan mode, the first major new mode for Battlefield in pretty much ever, as earlier Battlefields featured only the popular conquest mode. Titan mode requires you to destroy the enemy's Titan while defending your own (the Titan is a flying aircraft carrier of sorts defended by incredibly strong energy shields).

In order to bring down the shields you'll need a total team effort. You can try to whittle the shields down using regular weapons and vehicles, but that will take a long time. The easiest way is to seize missile silos, which are sort of like the flag-capture points in other Battlefield games. Seize a silo, and a timer counts down to the time it will launch a Bloc-2 ATM missile at the enemy Titan, inflicting damage on its shields. You now have a tactical decision. Do you defend the silo after you capture it, to make sure the missile launches, or do you try to capture an enemy silo to prevent it from launching its missile at your Titan? Fire enough missiles at a Titan, and its shields will collapse, allowing you to board it by using assault pods to "shoot" infantry up to the Titan.

Once on board the Titan, it's a close-quarters battle to destroy four security consoles scattered throughout the vessel. Do so, and you gain access to the nuclear reactor. You'll again need a team effort to destroy the reactor quickly. But if you do destroy it, you'll need to race to get off the Titan in time, leaping off and parachuting to Earth. That's important, because even though your team will win if you destroy an enemy Titan, you only get a special pin and other bonuses if you successfully escape the explosion.

Battlefield 2142 itself feels like Battlefield, but with really cool new weapons and vehicles. The hovertank is unlike any other tank in a Battlefield game, because it slides around like it's on ice. It lets you strafe left and right, and that gives you new mobility to try to dodge attacks. The aircraft, we're told, will be easier to fly than those found in existing Battlefield games (flying a helicopter in Battlefield 2 is remarkably as hard as flying one in real life). But to compensate, the aircraft will be nerfed so that they don't dominate the map like they do in Battlefield 2. (Speaking of which, Nilsson says that DICE is currently working to fix that issue in Battlefield 2.)

We got to see a montage of various vehicles, with their names, including the L-5 Riesig, the MK-1 Titan, the Type 21 Nekomata, the T-39 Bogatyr walking tank, and the UD-6 Talon gunship. It's all ironic that none of this stuff exists in the real world, but that similar naming conventions are used with real-world military vehicles and equipment.

Yet perhaps the biggest appeal in Battlefield 2142 will be the customization options of your character. Even though the game features only four class types, you can modify your character's weapons and loadouts in countless ways. Pack up on lots of weapons and gear and you'll slow down. Go with a lighter load, and you won't have as much firepower, but you'll move faster. You can create a load that's just right for you. And perhaps the coolest thing in terms of persistence that we learned is that if you get a knife kill on someone, you will always be able to commemorate that kill because you will have your victim's dog tags. You'll have dog tags for every knife kill, with the victim's name on it, so you can really rub it in if you get multiple knife kills on your friend.

Battlefield 2142 looks very cool. It uses a slightly more advanced version of the Battlefield 2 engine, and it looks a bit sharper up close and in person. The famed Battlefield gameplay appears to be just as sharp as ever, and we'll find out for sure when the game ships this fall.

the idea of mechs sounds nice and the trailers show them as very powerful... i suppose there will be AT infantry with MORE than 5 rounds this time around!

let them have like a Gauss gun which takes 10-15 secs to recharge after every shot with endless ammo!

.. And from FiringSquad : http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=10218

After fighting in two historical wars and one fictional near-future conflict, developer Digital Illusions and publisher Electronic Arts are jumping ahead nearly 150 years with their next entry in their mega selling Battlefield multiplayer shooter series. Battlefield 2142 is set for release this fall and will be demoed at E3 today so FiringSquad decided to get in touch with DICE producer Marcus Nilsson to find out more about their plans for the game.
FiringSquad: First, why did the team at DICE decide to make a sci-fi future game for the next Battlefield project?

Marcus Nilsson: We started thinking and talking about doing a futuristic version of Battlefield years ago. We knew that would give us some opportunities to make some game play changes and introduce new weapons and vehicles that couldn’t exist in the current setting. When we started the actual development about 18 months ago, we knew we were going to have fun with this. It’s also great to see that a futuristic Battlefield game is something that a lot of people in the community have been waiting for. Initially I totally thought that the great things would be the Battle Walkers and the neat new equipment, but we have also taken the through the gun experience further than ever before. It has never been more rewarding to shoot a gun in an FPS

FiringSquad: Some people have commented that Battlefield 2142 looks in the screenshots like a Battlefield 2 total conversion rather than a real evolution in the series. How is the game being designed to be a true successor to Battlefield 2?

Marcus Nilsson: There is actually more change between BF2 and BF2142 than between BF1942 and BF2. We deliver a brand new game mode, the most enjoyable to weapons and toys yet, and as I said, it has never been more rewarding to shoot a gun. We introduce the ability to build your own soldiers, more than 1500 combos to equip your soldier. We up persistence to an unprecedented level, offering everything from medals and pins to ribbons and batches. Also, try knifing someoneJ…

FiringSquad: How does the future setting affect how the gameplay will be handled in the game?

Marcus Nilsson: We’re keeping things grounded in reality, so this isn’t Star Trek with lasers and such. However, we have some very advanced weaponry that will give players a lot of new toys to play with. Obviously the introduction of Battle Walkers will dial up the current rocks paper scissors gameplay that makes our experience so balanced. The addition of the Titans floating over the battlefield is something that has to be experienced firsthand before you can believe how much you will need to switch up your strategy. Teamwork has never been so important. Vehicles will still play as large role as always. We have had vehicles since 1942, we know how to make them add to gameplay and making the balance interesting. This is the 3rd generation BF and the vehicles feel better than ever.

FiringSquad: What are some of the team's current favorite weapons and items in the game?

Marcus Nilsson: The SD-8 Accipiter gun drone is the best friend of many people on the team. It’s great at watching your back as you assault the enemy, and is very powerful at close range. However, as with everything in the BF universe, the balance comes from the fact that it is terrible at long range, and makes it so you can’t hide anywhere as it is floating above your head. The active camo is another feature that, well executed, will make you feared on the battlefield. The greatest addition though is the ability to customize your soldier making every game different forcing alternate solutions to the action unfolding on the battlefield. This will force you to think carefully about how to approach opponents since you never know how they are equipped. Sides will this way be differentiated in a way you’ve not seen before in the world of Battlefield.

FiringSquad: What graphical and physics enhancements will be put into the game?

Marcus Nilsson: We have built in new rendering technology, and the mechs will employ new physics – it’s quite a unique view when you are inside the cockpit. We’ll have brand new snow and rain effects making the world very dramatic and dark. The year of 2142 is a dark one, fighting for survival is on the agenda.

FiringSquad: Are there plans for any playable demos or beta tests for Battlefield 2142 to be released prior to the game's shipment to stores?

Marcus Nilsson: We will be employing multiple Beta tests before ship. We’ll have more details in the future.

FiringSquad: After Battlefield 2142 is released, the big question is "Where can the series go from here?"

Marcus Nilsson: I’d say pretty much anywhere…. That’s the beauty of this universe, the game play support so many variations. As long as we believe the game will appeal to our core audience or expand it for more people to enjoy we’ll carry on the search for new ideas.

FiringSquad: Finally is there anything else you wish to say about Battlefield 2142?

Marcus Nilsson: We want the community to know we are committed to delivering the best possible experience, and we’re really looking forward to playing this online with everyone. We introduce a brand new game mode that changes the way you play. We will however still keep Conquest in there, knowing how much everyone likes it. The customization is going to give you a very broad experience, providing a fresh experience every time you play.

an interview (http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/battlefield-2142/711979p1.html) with BF2142's Senior Producer in which they discuss the new gameplay elements in BF2142.

GameSpy: What was the genesis of the new Titan mode? Was this gametype something the Battlefield team had already been kicking around for a while, or was it born out of a desire to come up with something new and cool for BF 2142?
Marcus Nilsson: Titan mode has been in development for a long time. As you know, DICE hasn't introduced a new gameplay mode since Battlefield 1942, where we brought you Conquest mode, so the addition of a new mode was something we took very seriously. We've never succumbed to the pressure to add features just so you can check them off a list -- a new gameplay mode needed to be as good, if not better than Conquest, or there was no way we'd release it. We've also been working on BF 2142 for while, and the time is right to bring out Titan mode because it fit perfectly into the future universe we were creating. BF 2142 is an all-new game for us, and Titan mode is a big part of what defines it. It's a brand new way of playing in the Battlefield sandbox and with a lot of new toys.

Titan mode... sounds like Star Trek....

Uh, hearing this interview puts a whole perspective on the BF development team, (I can just picture this guy on little gamers) but here's a really positive quote:

Of course, though, we want the BF2 players to play both, basically. And we are thinking of ways we can reward BF2 players that come to 2142 so we can acknowledge that they've stayed true. Basically we want to find a way of telling other people that "hey, these guys play BF2"

It is funny that they are trying to claim titan mode is original. Only somebody that never played Unreal Tournament would believe them.

doobiwan
28th June 2006, 11:56 AM
He's response to the question is classic:

I think the Titan game mode is unique from the point that, one, it's the first new Battlefield game mode. And I would say that most of the game modes coming out, really, obviously, are taking from playing other games and learning from other game modes. And you take pieces from each and every one. I think coming out with a brand new game mode that has never been seen in any game like it before, is very hard, and I don't think that that would necessarily be good for a good game mode. But, there were two questions to that question...

to paraphrase "Yeah we copied, but it's different because it's Battlefield, not only that it's a NEW battlefield, n stuff, and kinda well, but I can't answer any more so I'm going to ramble and mumble n stuff okay . . ."

Uh, I wouldn't put penis' passed EA . . .

Official website is in it's early stages, and can be pretty hard to find.

Unless of course you have a handy link. So here, have a handy link.

http://www.ea.com/official/battlefield/2142/us/

Still, it mentions FOUR TIMES the number of unlocks as in BF2...

However, according to a movie that is on this month's NAG disc, two of those unlocks are medic bags (healing) and defibs (revive), so they probably just took half the basic things from BF2 and made them unlocks in 2142...

Interesting titbit scrounged from http://bf2142.com/ :

On CVG you can now see the second part of that inverview. Part one can be found here (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=143035), while part two is located here (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=143242).

How are you going to reward squad-based gameplay this time around? What incentives and rewards are there?

Jamil Dawsari: This has really grown out of what we've seen with Battlefield 2. We knew we had something really special with the squad mode, but we didn't really have a sense of how to draw it out more. Given that we have a futuristic setting we can really play around with that a lot more. So as an example, the networked battlefield is something that squad mates bring to the table, you also will get more career points in-game in fact, if you do things to help your squad. So as a distinction you have score, which is how the leaderboards are tracked and then you have career points which are based not only your score, but on awards and helping your squad. You also have something called field upgrades. These are temporary unlocks if you will. Say you're ranked three, what you'll get once the upgrade bar is filled (and that's filled by doing squad-based actions - for example following your squad leader's orders), you'll temporarily unlock the things right above your current level. That field upgrade lasts as long as you're on the server.

Yipee!

Good plans all round!

Now they just have to tell us if we need to spam the button in order to fight the forces of gravity and triumph to open our damn para... :p

You don't need to spam the button anyway... you just need to wait until your char 'assumes the position' - ie, he starts to umm... swan? (you'll know, because your weapons disappear). As soon as that happens, hit '9' and your para will open.

FeralBanana
7th August 2006, 07:34 PM
And if you're the last guy left on your team on mashtuur jumping from mosque building? THEN you need to spam...

Which is what I didn't do and lost the round for my side :embarrased:

Most important upgrade for BF2142:

'the default parachute key is now the space bar and not the "9."'

Thats the first thing I am going to change. Space Bar is Jump, the Chute goes to the left thumb button on the mouse.

doobiwan
8th August 2006, 10:45 AM
you can't 'chute and jump at the same time, but when diving to the ground you do want something big and easy to hit,

rainy
8th August 2006, 10:53 AM
No issues with the thumb button. Except for the odd occasion when the frickin chute wont open because I am too close to a wall...

But the ground is big and easy to hit. It's when you miss that you have problems - or you have discovered flight

I've also noticed that sometimes if it lags a little and it looks like you're running into a guy, your guy grunts and gets damaged slightly... I wonder if it's possible to be killed from that... 0_o

Could it be that everyone is getting me wrong?

All I am saying is that I will map Jump to Space and Chute to left thumb.

Why would I want to jump in free fall?

Hmm well, with the way they describe the beta client, it sounds like they're talking about Bf2 patch 1.3!!

Heh, in one of the screenshots, one of the guys writes: 'unplayable'

doobiwan

Well technically it is, it's teh same engine as BF2, same C@rp, different century :(

From the writeup it seems that the game is quite fun to play. My biggest concern is, how much spawn raping is going to go on, how will the gameplay be overall for all the players and players types. are we going to have the same schenario where the assault and fibbers armour whore and turn the game unfair into a spawnraping frenzy?

Well have to see, i for one will buy it. Just for the sake of giving it a try. Who knows it might be just like a sf add on or a complete blast of a sucess.

My biggest concern is the amount of knife whores running around hunting dogtags...

See, for me, this here BF2142 thang has some appeal.... It took me AGES to get stuck into BF2. Time constraints, confidence, paranoia and suspicion of the dang web etc. meant that I had a ridiculous K/D ratio of 0.001 or the like for the longest time. The idea of hitting the ground running with this here little critter is attractive, cos now I know the difference between crouch and jump.... Or is that prone and sprint? Errrrmmmmmmmmm...................

More like...RUN!! I was pretty much the same until I learnt left from right. Poor $abre had been trying to convince us for months that online was the way to go but noone believed him until that fateful day long ago (anything over a month is an age) when we all got together and raped N3ddy's bandwidth in the pursuit of badges.

Now it's like and addiction and even N3ddy doesn't have a cure.

Interesting article about how BF2142 scales on different screen cards (and some other nice links to BF2142 scaling in there too)

Read at your own peril ! ;)

Here is a website with tons of info, especially about the unlocks and awards:

www.bf2142.com

The awards haven't changed much. The badge requirements are a tad more moderate. The ranking scores are overall lower than in BF2 - if the scoring system is the same, you will rank up quicker. Apparently commanders will now get their score halved if their team loses. But read for yourself.

Oh, and by the way - I foresee some booster packs. The number of maps in the game is not exactly big...
