View Full Version : New Software

I'm busy testing out the new vbulletin v4 publishing suite.

It's VERY different from what is here currently. The site now opens on a CMS rather than directly on the forums, there are user blogs available, the default style has completely changed.

I essentially took a copy of the forums as it is today, and upgraded it to the new software. I've had to disable all of the third party functionality that used to exist for now (embedded videos, the /me processing, obfuscated email addies etc). I'll go through it at some stage and see what still works on the new software, and what is still actually needed.

I let the updater install some "default" CMS data, so there are all sorts of weird articles loaded.

If you'd like to take a look at the new site, please PM me for an access username and password (Test site is hidden behind an authentication wall). You'll be able to log in to the publishing software using your current forum account.

I'm looking for people to write some articles. Maybe think of some categories and/or sections for the articles to go in to. I'll probably allow clan members to add articles etc.

Feel free to mess around with the blog facility as well.

Just bear in mind that it is a test site, so don't go creating any masterpieces without saving a copy to your local machine so you can re-create it later if necessary (later being when the software goes live on the main site).

I'm also looking for someone(s) to create some new colour schemes. Do this by taking a screen shot of the site, and then changing the colours of the screen elements in a photo editor. I'll then create the schemes as site templates.

There will be NO layout changes or major graphics changes, apart from the actual site logo.

You can post and go crazy in the forums... just bear in mind, nobody is going to see it. If you want to discuss the new site, use this thread, or create a new one in one of the other forums.

PS:
There MAY be cookie conflicts between the test site and the live site. You may experience things like being logged out of one site while you're logged into the other one, or just not being able to login to the test site at all (just returns you back to an unlogged-in state). Just close and re-open your browser.

That is actually a cool idea, TG - we have so many people who are extremely knowledgeable in their fields who could be enlightening with a wealth of information - is that what you had in mind?

AND I was logged out & didn't even visit the test site.

I was also logged out Flatty.

What type of articles are you looking for TG?

Yeah sorry, you were logged out because I changed cookie settings in an attempt to resolve the conflict. Didn't help though. :grr:

If you look at the test site, you WILL have problems logging back in here, it is very annoying. You'll HAVE to close all wrg sites and restart your browser (always works for me), or failling that you can delete any wargeeks related cookies, and try again.

Just use a different browser for the test site? Cookie problems sorted.

Getting back on topic...

Tonight I'm going to re-install the test server, as Jelsoft have released a maintenance package which fixes some bugs. I will be wiping the existing database and files, so if you've done anything on the test site that you want to keep, please ensure you have saved a copy on your local machine.

Just to re-iterate: The test site can go kablooie at any time while I fiddle and faff with settings, and figure out how all the new stuff works.

The last time you fiddled and fapped I couldn't log in at all. Let's hope it works better this time.

I thought the topic was on the new, soft, sugar-free WrG cookies?

You haven't requested access to the test site, so whatchoo on about, Willis?

Right, I've reset the test site and updated it to the latest maintenance release. I didn't install the sample data this time round.
I took a copy of the live site from this afternoon.

I gave up when I saw you excluded the Blog and/or Article feature - dude, I like rambling, even if nobody reads it. It's like I am being immortalized in time...

The "new" MyBB is just using the new default style of vbulletin. And yes, that is what the new site is going to look like. Although I'll have a few different colour schemes available. When I get around to it.

Whatchoo talkin' bout, Willis?

I haven't excluded anything. You MIGHT not have access to those features right now... but then this is the first I'm hearing of this, so nobody told me it needs fixing. D'oh.

Flatty, I've faffed a bit in the new software. Moved the forum to the default page, and stuffed about a bit with the CMS settings. Let me know if you can create and publish an article.

I've created a new site logo on the test site, which should hopefully scale very nicely with other colour schemes. For those of you with access, take a look and let me know what you think.

Actually, I'm quite proud of it, I think it looks awesome.

Thanks. There was a philosophical discussion about it between Arby and Voicy last night. I'm surprised that Arby didn't drive over to Voicy's place to smack him.
Arby did go to bed a sad panda though.
