Woot!

Finally bought the expansion pack yesterday, goodbye sleep :)

Anyone keen to play?

rainy
5th January 2006, 03:23 PM
Where can I get the expansion for not too much money?

Ruslan74
5th January 2006, 10:31 PM
get the full game plus expansion for R299 at BT Games if you dont have the original game.

@ Doobiwan - drop me a line and we can have a match 1 vs 1. What do you say?

doobiwan
6th January 2006, 12:20 AM
Sounds great, maybe some time this weekend. The Bundle is R299, and the expansion alone is R299, go figure!

rainy
6th January 2006, 07:23 AM
I have the original game, was R99 at Pick n Pay. But they didn't have the expansion.

doobiwan
6th January 2006, 01:52 PM
Cool, we can always just play vanilla DoW, I'm not familiar with the new units yet myself.

Maybe This evening? I can usually only get online around 10pm.

rainy
6th January 2006, 02:05 PM
Give me some time to get familiar with the game... I just got it :D

doobiwan
6th January 2006, 04:48 PM
I don't know about patch 1.41, but I can tell you the basics:
-Play aggressively - turtling doesn't work in vanilla DoW.
-To take out armour, you need anti armour weapons (rockets, plasma, lascannons) Normal bolters will just bounce off.
-Don't ignore morale! A broken unit is useless. Give squads leaders.

fivel
6th January 2006, 05:44 PM
Steer clear of useless...he slaughters me everytime we play DoW....just thinking about it he slaughters me in every RTS game we play...:-(

Ruslan74
6th January 2006, 07:55 PM
lol @ Fivel... i am not THAT evil... :p

@ Doobiwan - i will be on MSN but still havent patched my DoW to 1.41 so let me know what version you want to play later this evening... ;)

doobiwan
8th January 2006, 07:07 PM
Doh, I mean DoW!

We just seemed to keep missing each other last night :( That's okay I guess, I got my butt kicked twice by random peeps.

Ruslan74
8th January 2006, 09:52 PM
how about we play for say Monday evening around 8'ish? If it ok with you let me know in this thread. ;)

rainy
9th January 2006, 07:53 AM
If you need it, I can burn Patch 1.41 on CD and send it to you... I burned my cap last month to get it ;)

Ruslan74
9th January 2006, 09:04 AM
huh? you mean you got the full 240MB patch? i just got the 1.40 -> 1.41 patch which is 27MB... let me know when you guys patched... need some DoW time again... :p

doobiwan
9th January 2006, 09:11 AM
Patched and good to go. Tonight sounds good, can we make it rather for 9?

Ruslan74
9th January 2006, 09:46 AM
PM'ed you. Maybe we can do a 2 vs 2 if Fivel and Rainynight can join us?

doobiwan
9th January 2006, 10:07 AM
That sounds awesome.

Ruslan74
9th January 2006, 10:24 AM
and i promise not to spam Fire Prisms...

doobiwan
9th January 2006, 10:43 AM
hmmm . . . now I'm worried . .

edit: I'll counter with a guardsman rush!!!! :p

Ruslan74
9th January 2006, 10:50 AM
ROFL! hehehe... my psychotic attacks are already working... ;)

TG
9th January 2006, 10:53 AM
Heh, I do believe you mean 'psyching out' ;)

But I suppose psychotic works just as well, LOL! :D

doobiwan
9th January 2006, 11:43 AM
No, that'd be chaos . . .

Ruslan74
9th January 2006, 11:54 AM
Fivel is keen for a free for all. Now that will be chaos! :p

doobiwan
9th January 2006, 11:58 AM
Do you want to go via the online lobby, or direct connect?

Ruslan74
9th January 2006, 12:01 PM
direct connect. thus skype will make it easier to chat along.

let me ask you, do you rush in the game or build up before venturing into the dark fog of war?

doobiwan
9th January 2006, 12:54 PM
Theoretically you can't really turtle in DoW, but I try my best ;)

I try to play aggressively but I think I need to be more so.

fivel
9th January 2006, 01:07 PM
Err what is turtling around???

Ruslan74
9th January 2006, 01:11 PM
yeah, at times i also draw back and wait... this ends in being my downfall so mostly i rush into a dancing match against the enemy.

with the Imperial Guard you can somewhat turtle and wait. but as usual the best defense is a big offense. ;)

doobiwan
9th January 2006, 01:41 PM
Five, turtling's when you build huge defenses, sit back and farm and only towards end game, when you're fully tech'd do you attack. DoW is specifically designed so as to prevent you from doing that.

I tried it last night and was beaten by "capture and hold" the enemy held more map points than me.

rainy
9th January 2006, 01:44 PM
I should be able to make it at around 9 - just give me some instructions as to how and where to meet. But beware - I am still new... ;)

useless - yes, I got the full 1.41 patch, which is actually 330 megs. It was either that or download all the single patches, which would have been about the same bandwidth...

doobiwan
9th January 2006, 01:53 PM
Just a word of caution, I had to set up port forwarding through my router, which took a while, so if you need to, get going a bit earlier. Check out www.portforward.com

Ruslan74
9th January 2006, 01:53 PM
@ everybody - we can meet on MSN and try to have SKype hosted by somebody other than the DoW server host.

AFAIK turtling is done best with the Eldar as they can build portals and turrets by critical control points.

If its going to be 4 of us then i would think 2 vs 2 match or if only 3 make it in time then a quick free for all on a 4 player map?

doobiwan
9th January 2006, 02:37 PM
Sounds good. I nominate someone else's machine as host. I'm only running a poor ole xp2000 . . .

Ruslan74
9th January 2006, 02:41 PM
i cant host. i am on ISDN and it would bog down under your ADSL pressure. :p

but for a 1 vs 1 i can host without issues, but then you would have to host Skype. ;)

fivel
9th January 2006, 03:48 PM

rainy

Sorry guys - I can't make it tonight. Having some trouble with our munchkin. :/ Looks like you'll have to make do with a threesome...

Ruslan74
9th January 2006, 03:58 PM
@ Fivel - you just call the other guys from your PC first. ;)

@ RN65 - no probs. hope your munchkin gets better!

rainy
9th January 2006, 04:18 PM
Thanks useless. I hope so too :)

doobiwan
9th January 2006, 04:56 PM

rainy

Ruslan74
10th January 2006, 07:27 AM
@ Doobiwan and Fivel - thanks for the games last night, great fun and a tad hectic in the threesome free-for-all. Will watch the replays tonight just to pinpoint the weaknesses in your strategies, a good challenge is always welcome! ;)

doobiwan
10th January 2006, 09:53 AM
There are no weaknesses in my Strategy. I have no strategy, ha! ;)

Seriously though, I'd love some pointers.

Ruslan74
10th January 2006, 10:11 AM
ok. here goes what i know :

All Races

- build Listening Posts ( LPs ) on every Strategic Point ( SP ) you can capture

- never have too much money, spend it on units or upgrades, having your coffers full wont help you from being overrun

- expand, expand, expand

Orks vs Eldar

- you have to get close and personal, use your Hero's teleport function to entangle Reapers in CC and Stormboyz to jump for some CC choppa fun.

- never play the long range shooting match with any other race with ork infantry even if you outnumber the enemy.

- get Trakks ASAP, they chew enemy infantry very nicely

- get Noobz ASAP within your squads or even better, Noobz squadz are the meanest CC infantry in the whole game.

Space Marines vs Eldar

- Use your FC to CC reapers/spiders thus negating Eldar ranged firepower

- dance your SM/Scouts from Eldar Farseer if you can

- concentrate firepower on single enemy units, dont disperse it on all enemy units, ie. shoot at one enemy squad while FC is busy melee'ing other enemy squads

- in Tier 2 scout sniper rifles can break ANY enemy infantry with at least 2-3 scout squads

- get your Cult Machine up & running in Tier 2 to produce the formidable CC Dreadnaught

CC = Close Combat

ask me more anytime... :p

rainy
10th January 2006, 01:29 PM
OK, I think I'll play some skirmishes against the CPU first... :p

I am with you there doobs, I keep getting the message 'you have been anahilated' when playing useless.

Check out the dawn of war forums http://forums.relicnews.com/forumdisplay.php?f=139 .

Ruslan74
10th January 2006, 01:48 PM
hey, i wasnt that mean.. i at least gave them time to defend themselves...

we need a 4th person RN65 so we can do 2 vs 2 one night... ;)

rainy
10th January 2006, 01:48 PM
Point taken :)

Edit: a2vs2 at this point would be highly unfair towards anyone playing on my side :p

100% Five!!! ;)

Ruslan74
10th January 2006, 02:13 PM
I see now... never underestimate the Eldar... they might just pop a surprise or two against you puny humans and orks!

:p

doobiwan
10th January 2006, 04:37 PM
Yeah like the fact that they all just cross dressing fairies! ;)

Ruslan74
10th January 2006, 09:57 PM
right right... herewith some feedback after seeing last night's replays of the threesome games we played :

From Doobi's side :

- dont reinforce your initial units until your hero and 2 squads of your main force are out, or else your main force deployment will suffer a delay in the initial stages of the game

- capture all the SP's around your base and build LP's on them ASAP, this boost your income by an extra 20% per SP

- when playing imperial guard use the bunkers to your advantage, you can move troops within those bunkers to other of your buildings without taking the troops out

Now Fivel's turn :

- do not throw single squads into the grinder against superior forces, rather build up and send them all at once to get superior numbers on your favour

- when you do send those squads into war use the FC as a primary melee fighter to attract enemy fire and use your squads to concentrate their fire on single enemy squads to kill them faster

- dont build flame throwers as SM are poor at melee, rather get them bolters or build Assault Space Marines and JUMP them into the rear of the enemy to take out their ranged troops

- queue your scouts to capture SP after SP or else you loose precious seconds while they stay idle

Thats all i can say after seeing the replays, hope to catch you online more often for some more DoW! :D

doobiwan
11th January 2006, 08:24 AM
Thanks dude. How do you queue commands, shift?

Ruslan74
11th January 2006, 08:31 AM
yip, with SHIFT... just like Nissan... SHIFT Expectations... :D

doobiwan
11th January 2006, 09:28 AM

Ruslan74
11th January 2006, 09:43 AM
da boyz ruled da puny humanz... pretty bloody and plain fruity brutal i must add... nothing like the drink. :p

doobiwan
11th January 2006, 10:27 AM
Orks win by numbers right?

Ruslan74
11th January 2006, 10:36 AM
yip. a green blob was all that Fivel saw coming towards him... orks have the funniest comeback lines though... hehehehe

fivel
11th January 2006, 11:27 AM
It was as though I brought a knife to a gun fight....I don't know whether it was numbers.....but useless pwned me.

doobiwan
11th January 2006, 12:04 PM
Heavy Bolters I imagine would do the trick

Ruslan74
11th January 2006, 12:15 PM
yes it is, but you need some kind of meatshield between the heavy bolters and the orks or else they close in pretty fast...

Ruslan74
13th January 2006, 12:45 PM
Right, Fivel and myself are eager for a few DoW vanilla or WA games later tonight before trying to hunt for Stoke in BF2.

Anybody else have the urge to feel the Boyz stinky breath? :p

doobiwan
14th January 2006, 11:46 PM

Maybe Sunday night?

Ruslan74

doobiwan
16th January 2006, 03:22 PM
Doh! In a fit of excitement, my wife decide we need to do some building! So we (by taht I mean me . . .) spend the whole of last night doing a re-org on the house to get stuff out the way, so they can bash holes in things :(

Will definitely try to squeeze a round or two in this week . .

Ruslan74
16th January 2006, 03:25 PM
lol.. well my rounds with Fivel were numerous but short, didnt play much though... sometime this week it would be cool to have you all in one match. :p

doobiwan
16th January 2006, 04:11 PM

Ruslan74

doobiwan
17th January 2006, 09:04 AM

Ruslan74
17th January 2006, 09:08 AM

Darnit696
