View Full Version : Punky's review of BC2

In a moment of weak mindedness I bought this game. I still have no real idea why. I suppose it must be a subconscious attempt to restore the days of hack free BF2 :D

From a graphic point of view I think BC isn't to bad. Some very nice video clips in the SP story line. The language is an issue for me. I need no assistance what so ever in that department. Trying to curb it and not encourage.

What really annoys me is the voip...or lack there of. In my opinion voip made BF2. There were many FPS on the market at the time but the voip made it. Okay TS3 can run in the backround without much hastle and I can talk to my clannies....HOWEVER, you are cut of comms wise from any other squad members. This can be frustrating.

The connection and Punkbuster issues. The friends list and server lists that don't work....All of this smacks of a total lack of respect for the paying customer. How can you release a product with so much crap. I am not technical programing wise but I have No idea why they bothered with a beta...WE ARE THE BETA. Just we paid for it. PB is currently not running on the SGS servers and you can tell. The number of bullet proof snipers is amazing (Hax already)
I wish some of the hax programmers worked for EA. Maybe they could teach them how to write programs that work.

Right now I am sorry I spend my hard earned moola on BC2. Maybe once they have ironed out the bugs it will be better.

Hope to see you online when we can get a spot on a working server :D

PS. DON'T squad with vorty. He spawns on your carefully selected hidey spot where you have been successfully sniping, to the point where you are even earning all sorts of lovely badge thingys, and screams look here shoot me shoot me......or nade my sniper friend here next to me.

Vorty

In a moment of weak mindedness

What do you mean, 'a moment' ? I thought it was a permanent thing with you. :p

Anyway, had a good time on TS and BFBC2 with mah geekies last night. I still need to tweak settings though - although it could be the server. I was getting some nasty lag in places.
At least I managed to get my assault unlocks.

Hehe - I must admit to being one of the guys that spawns on a sniper hiding away, and then rushing out furiously to my death ... :D

TG

Heh, I think it's hilarious. I think I'll make a point of finding the sneaky squaddie who's sniping, then spawn on top of him and jump around like an idiot.
:D

Agreed, kak game.

I bought it as well, and am not sure yet if I regret it or not.

I guess if you can ease into a round and don't get prawned all the time by 24/7 players who are already 20 ranks ahead, you can have an enjoyable time. As I did now for a few minutes. Even managed to get a few remarkable sniper kills.

As a sniper, I dislike a few things. No prone (but I knew that), very little high ground, lots of shrub and foliage on some maps (= no distance view), and generally a faster pace as opposed to BF2. The death cam (stupid COD thing) is absolutely pointless if you want to snipe - the point of being a sniper is that the other bugger doesn't know where you are (or at least has to figure it out by himself).

What I find extremely annoying is this stupid, loud blaring alarm siren that goes off when your team is about to lose. Totally messes up the concentration.

Server browser is an abomination. But we went over that already.

There is a lot of stuff in the game that tries to appease the COD/Fast-pace crowd. I don't see myself putting nearly as much time into this one as I did into BF2 or even BF2142.

But I also knew that...

I'm enjoying the game's SP campaign a lot ... I never bothered with MW1/2 online and basically just played the game for the SP aspect. If the same happens with this title, I wouldn't regret it. Still awesome SP fun.

I am enjoying it at maximum resolution in SP. The one thing that irritates me is the voice-overs seem to die out intermittently, mainly in the cut scenes. Anyone else experienced this?

TG

Nope, no issue with the cut scenes.

I'm sure that all the BC2 issues will be sorted out over time.. Punkbuster was disabled because of an issue, but I believe that issue was resolved so hopefully PB support will resume shortly?
The swearing can become a non-issue in the multiplayer - turn dialog off. You miss out on a couple of things, but generally no big loss.

Anyways I think the main issue for me is the lack of local game servers.. That being said there's enough place for about 230 players to be playing simultaneously, however about 230 ARE playing throughout all the peak times! I'm getting good at playing on International servers, but there's a lot more randomness that occurs possibly due to my 1 second lag spikes that can only be blamed on our lousy shaped International bandwidth, however I have enjoyed some really great games!

You should see how awesome it is to spawn on Punky... TBag him a little, then once the enemies notice you, flee for your life.. let them take it out on His Punkiness! :D
Hmm.. perhaps I need to play some more PR.. there's some incendiaries left in my medpack I believe..

My BF2142 did not work for the first month until they patched it, so this is already much better. But I also wished they paid more attention to some basics like the server browser. I still had a lot of fun so far. Glad that I bought it.

I've decided that if I can't get any local game time I'll join the Froggies. Somehow it wasn't quite as frantic as our local servers & I was getting reasonable scores (all two games) - maybe next time it'll be different, but at least it's a way to level when you can't get on to local servers. I didn't experience any lag at all.

Well the local servers will have almost 500 player capacity on SGS soon.
The thing I like about this game is all the geeks coming out of the woodwork again, people who I didnt get to play with because they had already left the game when I started.
Crank up TS, stop worrying about stats and have fun!!

I think I have the worst K/D at the moment. :p
Frik, but I die alot. I really need to review my strategies. ;)

I logged onto TS last night (after a client update) - found nobody there, but before 8. Did I log onto the right one - 196.25.210.10:9999?

Don't worry TG, I also get pwned on local servers, which is why I was pleasantly surprised against the Froggies.

Yeah I saw you were online with the froggies. It's a pity you can't send messages to online players.
I should give them a try, maybe they'll be easier meat.

Gus, I think developers are starting to get a bit slack as well because some bright spark will always come along and find a workaround for their sloppy programming (or implementations of an idea) before they're even aware there is a problem.

BTW - when I do my server browser exercise, I make sure that I have PB, ranked, and Not Full flagged - it takes seconds.

Must say I've been enjoying it and strangely, the rush maps especially. The lack of VOIP and the server browser issues are annoying but will be sorted out sooner rather than later (with the punkbuster issue). The destructible environment adds such a new game dimension that it really makes you think. I suspect when the COD kiddies on the BFBC2 servers leave because it's not as restrictive it will slow down and become more enjoyable. Can't say I've really had lag issues, I get graphic jerks occasionally but I suspect that is more the fault of my rig.

Can't wait until the M95 unlock as the bullet drop is minimal and it is a 1 kill shot just about anywhere on the body, in BF2 it was useless.

The ability to fire tracer darts at tanks and choppers and then for any1 in your squad to fire homing missiles is awesome too.

Sabre, TG posted a possible fix for the VoIP issue.

Arbythep00nage

The rename thing on the VOIP?
Thats going to be the worlds biggest fail from EA if it is correct.

Sabre did you see how you can use the rocket launcher if you lock on a tracer? you can hide behind a building and shoot straight up, its awesome!

I got a few games on a local server, at last...

So, granted, last night I was on a server with guys about the same rank, maybe a bit higher, as me - which was enjoyable.

Today, in my first foray into local servers, I get pwned - hold on, I am emptying my clip into this dude & he just one-shots me?

Of course we have more sniper faggs than any other other nation - no offence Rainy.

Don't give me a game & expect me to be happy when the majority of the community has already ranked up substantially & they're going to kick my butt because I couldn't get on the servers. Nevermind the late arrival of my game (6 days), the problem existed already. TG, I understand your frustration - I'm off to play with the Frogs until I've got all my unlocks & then we'll see how awesome these MoFo's are!

If you're playing assault kits or some such, int servers are fine. But with a 500ms lag, Sniper just plain sucks.

Flatty

I had a 375ms lowest ping on many servers, and I am in a tiny little hovel?

---------- Post added at 06:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:35 PM ----------

OMG - Punky, you've got 10x more game time than me....

I guess that would make you more knowledgeable than me. :p

I think I'm getting old & should stick to RTS games...

Rat, it seems that you have an advantage when playing with high ping - it's harder for the enemy to kill you.

Just a question since we've had this thread bumped - is the VoipReceive thing still the right spelling, or the wrong spelling because I corrected mine & my VoIP doesn't work?

RatStrydom
6th July 2010, 02:06 PM
I'll take a look what mine looks like becasue I haven't made any chagnes to it. Mine doesn't work though so I'm not sure how much help that will be to you. I've also been playing using TeamSpeak.

TG

Mine works, depending on the server.
Haven't tried it since the patch though.

I've spoken to Inyoni using the ingame voip when we played squad deathmatch the last time and it worked well.

I haven't tried the ingame VOIP, in fact I have turned it off now.

RatStrydom

The other night one of the guys tried the in-game VOIP and I could hear him fine. I still haven't changed anything, so it must have been fixed. The quality sucked though - it was very jerky and we abandoned it after about a minute of being frustrated.
