Has anybody here hosted a Wiki at an internet hosting company before?
Hosting one internally on the company is fairly easy since one has full control. However, I am a bit worried about the complications involved for external hosting. Does one just need a host that has PHP and MySQL and set up the stuff in there, or is in more complicated than that? I am an application programmer, so this whole web hosting area is a bit foreign to me.
I would really appreciate any advice.

@ GKM - pretty much php & mysql. It depends on the wiki tho.
I've set one up for us a couple of days ago: http://wiki.wargeeks.org
You can sign in with your forum credentials (hopefully) in order to edit/create pages.

Thanks TG.
Was it a lot of pain to set up?
And if the thing goes ahead, we shall need to pick a wiki product and I may have to recommend something to them, despite being clueless myself. There are a lot of Wiki products out there and I cannot really see what criteria one would use to pick one. Is there any specific reason why you picked MediaWiki or was it just because Wikipedia also runs it?

I think the fact that Wikipedia runs on Mediawiki is pretty much the driving motor behind such a decision. It is one of the most utilized and expandable products out there.

Thanks. Yes, internally in my company we use Moin and it works great, but it seems to me that the Python thing might be a bit of an issue on a shared hosting server.

No specific reason for the choice - I've played with a couple of different wikis before - phpwiki being one of them - media wiki seems to be more capable (ie, has more toys to play with.)
Setup was a breeze - the only thing I had an issue with was getting the vbulletin integration to work (properly), but normally that wouldn't come up :)
Basically, the criteria I would use for selection:
a) How easy is it to setup? What are the requirements?
b) What features are available for it (either built in or via addon)?
c) Is it easy to use?
d) Does it look good 'out of the box'?
One of the problems with Mediawiki is that the Help namespace is empty - mainly due to legal issues (IIRC). I believe they're working on that though.
You might need to populate your help or redirect to mediwiki's meta namespace.
