I often find myself in the library with absolutely no idea what book to grab for a good read. Tres and I have decided to have a book list handy in future, so I was busy looking for the book list called 101 books to read before you die (from Exclusive books) and ran into this list too. Are there any additions that you would make to the list?
I like the 101 book list because it includes quite a few South African books..

If you're into fantasy at all, you should try Pier Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, which are also available as audio books for people who don't have the time to actually read.
INCARNATIONS OF IMMORTALITY Series:
1. On a Pale Horse
2. Bearing an Hourglass
3. With a Tangled Skein
4. Wielding a Red Sword
5. Being a Green Mother
6. For Love of Evil Morrow
7. And Eternity Morrow
8. Under a Velvet Cloak
He takes characters like the Devil, Death, Nature, War, etc, and personifies them. Actually they're more like roles carried out by mortals who have somehow earned the right, either by luck or misfortune, to leave the world of mortals and perform the duties of each incarnation. He doesn't go heavy on the humour like Pratchett although there are adequate smatterings throughout, and deals with serious things like conscience and morality, though not in a heavy handed way.

101. Winnie-the-Pooh A.A. Milne
Probably my best book (or rather series of books) of all time is the Belgariad, followed by the Mallorean - David Eddings. I recently bought the entire series to read again.
My best author - Stephen King. I'd read his shopping list and get a kick out of it. Admittedly, a lot of his books are utter trash.. but man does that guy have a way with words.
Terry Pratchett would be my second favourite author.

Apart from Harper Lee's tale and one or two others I appear to be a rather uneducated sod. Guess Andy McNab's books don't count :D

8. Markus Zusak The Book Thief
I accidentally ended up near nowhere with nothing to read, so I borrowed this. I was so pleasantly surprised! The narrator is Death, which gives it a strange new approach. It's about a German girl in Nazi Germany around WW2. It has the (by now) usual bad Nazi's and good guys hiding Jews, but it still manages to not be a clichι. I recommend this highly.
58. Antoine de Saint Exupιry The Little Prince
Supposedly a children's book, most of us will have to find one translated from the original French. It is one of the deepest books ever. Also highly recommend this. They're right to have it on both lists.
46. Clan of the Cave Bear Jean M. Auel
I read the whole series of 5 or 6 books. Captivating writing. Most of the scenes she describes are based on archaeological excavations. Pretty good. Apart from the kinky sex scenes you could recommend this to everyone with an interest in pre-history around the last ice age.
91. The World according to Garp John Irving
I didn't read this, I accidentally stumbled over the book after it came highly recommended. In the first chapter it describes how Garp was conceived. I stopped reading after that. I might call it disgusting, as I couldn't be bothered to find a good word for "morsig" in English. The rest might be a masterpiece, but I doubt that a little. I'm no longer interested.
Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance.
This is what I have to add that's not on the list. You should read this. It's not about Zen. It is also not very factual about motorcycles. It is very inspiring about life and how to live it. Actually it's about a way to see the world which will make you live life better. I gave my family one each after I read it for the 5th time. The sequel is "Lola". That explains it all better.
