I found this quite useful. It's quite amazing how much you can refine you searches in Windows Vista & up:

I found the windows search to be the biggest load of ****.. ended up making my own search in order to find files with wildcards.

Yea vorty's Search rocks :punk: . It actually finds the files you looking for, where Widows search often returns no results for files you know are there.

AND just as a matter of interest, does it search better than Windows advanced query, because I am not having a problem with that.

I just us Everything Search Engine.
http://www.voidtools.com/
It indexes your entity drive in seconds and always gives immediate results. Only works on filenames though and not file content. Still it's incredibly fast.

Well Windows 7 search can take more than 5 minutes before it tells you that there are no files by that name.
That's if you haven't given up and found it yourself using a dos window with dir *blah*.* /s or whatever..

I've developed a cunning search engine. I name all my porn file "Porn####" and then when I search using Windows Advanced Query Syntax, I just type in "porn" and it finds all my files. :p
