nVidia hasn't admitted any liability, they say they're settling because it's the cheapest route for them to take.

A whole slew of their chips were manufactured using a substandard underfill - this included desktop & laptop parts. This would cause all sorts of defects to manifest in your display, going so far as to cause complete failure. Laptops were particularly badly affected because of the amount of times they were powered up, and shutdown. This is not to say that the desktop parts wouldn't fail, just that they'd fail at later stage than the laptop parts due to decreased freqency in the hot/cold delta.

Affected chips were all the G84, G86s, G92, and G9sl series. Chances are pretty good that we all had one of those - if you had an 8800GT/S, you had one. I wrote about this before.

As far as compensation goes for those not involved in the class action, it's never going to happen.

After all this, nVidia is still denying any wrong doing. There is an extremely good chance that they might even be using the same substandard underfill in their new 400 range.
