List of things i've tried that is NOT ok:
Renaming the BF2.exe ... baaad idea cos the upgrades then miss the exe completely. And .. this must be an ATI thing cos it did nothing for me and my nvidea.
BF2 high priority ... baad idea ... the network traffic suffers.
List of things i've tried that is ok:
The punkbuster hard - drive checks - cool and perfectly legal.
Disable intro movies - Awesome !
The others I left alone ... too scarey - except for defrag.

Do you have to do the punkbuster thing every time you play, or just once off?

I tried some of those typa things a while ago... bad mistake... complete purge of evwerything BF, I needed a clean slate to work on...
However, what Toke said about the intro movies + Bunkpuster are completely true..
Defrag is always a good idea...
etc..

Just going to post it here - so I can find it easliy to apply.
How do you do it?
Step 1: Ok, the first step is very simple, join any BF2 online server which is running punkbuster, preferably a ranked one.
Step 2: Once you are in, and respawned somewhere, press the ` key. This key is located on most keyboards above the tab key and to the left of the 1 key
Step 3: Once you have pressed this, a large white box should drop down with a load of text in it. Type "pb_sleep 500" (without the quotation marks) and hit the enter key
Step 4: Once you have done this, make sure the box is still up and type pb_writecfg to save your settings

One other thing i noticed was reducing most detail levels from HIGH to MEDIUM, as per many web sites mention there being little difference between the two, yet one hogs the PC by using more RAM.
I did that and noticed a serious drop in the amount of HDD activity when joining the SGS servers, its weird coz when playing single player or on an unranked server i never get my HDD as being so active as in a SGS server.

SGS servers are full ... thus they chow more resources and the admin's are stealing your MP3's !!! Run for the hills !

Run away!!!
These lag reduction things can often be a leetle bitty dodgy... still, stealing mp3s is a criminal offence, just like how they came to be in your possession in the first place... excuse the lack of sense in this paragraph...

I fooled them all....I filled my HDD with Neil Diamond songs...that'll screw 'em! ;)
Can't wait to try these lag fixes actually...I have not tweaked by settings in any way and I always have a ping of 70-80 on the server...I'd love to see that drop at least half.

Only if you steal the cd they are on, or hack the companies server is it a criminal offence. If you get them from a buddy you are streching the fair use clause of the copyright beyond what it was meant to allow. I don't think copyright contravention is a criminal offence - maybe a cival actionable breach of contrack type thing.
