Default Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Just finished watching this. As you may know, I am a fairly vocal non-fan of Tom Cruise. Bearing that in mind, the following might surprise you. This film is actually pretty freaking decent.

After the overproduced and overhyped trainsmash that was MI3, the sequel slash reboot has a pleasantly gritty and down to earth feel to it. Yes, it is still a bit OTT at times, but nowhere near as bad as before. Tom Cruise is keeping his overpaid ego in check by integrating with the rest of the cast, among them Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) and Simon Pegg. The plot has a few interesting twists and mostly steers clear of tired stereotypes.

It's by no means a masterpiece, but as a popcorn action flick it works well. If this marks the reboot to a series that became a bit tired, and if they plan on continuing in this vein, then I might actually keep an eye on the next one.

A few things about this film:

    1) I was a little disappointed at first in the "non-amazeballs" intro of the movie, reminiscent of MI2's grand canyon climb, but it did set the mood for the film.

    2) Simon Pegg did a sterling job of being the Techie in the team without portraying the stereotypical "hacker nerd with no street smarts".

    3) They reverted to the film's original theme song, which added a bit of nostalgia.

    4) I enjoyed the fact that things did not go to plan, as is the case with so many spy movies. The dust storm car chase scene & the magnetobuggy logic/physics were the only parts I didn't like / humour.

lastly) It was cool seeing Josh Halloway (Sawyer from Lost) again.

    That is all.

I didn't watch it because my version is a cam version, and I simply hate those. I guess I'm trolling.

Mine is a rip from some or other VOD/IFE system - decent quality, not HD though.

    Braggart!

Also, people are still watching this?

I'm almost as surprised as when I saw a bright yellow Hummer H3 this week with low profile tyres on chrome rims with spinners and whatnot, and when the driver got out his pants were pulled up all the way!

I watched this with the Punkmeister on Saturday evening and was soooo pleasantly surprised!! I too agree with RN that they I dont usually enjoy Toms movies (we're on a first name basis ) ... but this one was decent.
I was almost... a little bored at one point and then BAM... I remembered I had popcorn in the cupbaord... fetched it and all was well!

But seriously, I actually enjoyed this muchly!

Having finally gotten hold of a 720p version, and I have to concur - very enjoyable, and even more so when consider that Tom actually was on the outside of that building attached to a harness. My infinite respect to anyone who does that when he doesn't have to!
