Okay .. i'll go first ..
"The demo is like 1.2 GB so it had better be worth it" I said to myself and then downloaded it anywayz.
So .. sunday morning I load the game, cuss and curse at the startup EA adverts that you cannot bypass and remind myself to go and rename the flipping movie files sometime.
[side : thanks to NerdBoy for the link to the missing DirectX files] ( http://www.wargeeks.org/showthread.php?t=1934 )
The intro movie is a quick "whatzhappening" explaining the missile silo's and the Titan ship. It kind of implies that BF2142 only plays in Titan mode, though I was lead to believe that there are other modes as well.
So .. The interface is different and does not like me, and there's a thing about friends and stuff, but that does not really seem useful. At least the microphone test thing appears to work properly in sound options. Of course - in-game the microphone settings are still "Push to talk" [v] for me, even though I had just set it up for voice activation.
The map loads really fast compared to BF2, and the verifying stage during loading seems to be missing. The first time it runs it optimises shaders which takes forever and a year or two.
Then you're into the game. You have the choice of 4:
- A Scout thing.
- An Infantry thing [Also is a medic]
- An engineer thing [Shoots like anti-tank but also has repair machine thing]
- A support dude [Supplies ammo and uses a cool machine gun]
Each of these can be further customised like the ability to lose the body armour and therefore run for longer.
[P.S. Medic packs no longer instantly heal , you stand there and wait, and they have a habbit of expiring on you before you're fully healed.]
You choose a spawnpoint and viola you're onto a beautiful futuristic battlefield. Take a moment to enjoy the scenery, and then you run to the nearest vehicle [yup .. run is the same], press E and into the vehicle you go.
The vehicle behaves like a brick. In fact, all of them seem to be brick like, except for the transport airship [which flies exactly like a blackhawk]. I jumped into BF2142's equivalent of an APC and headed for the closest silo. I played with the main gun which kinda seems insubstantial and pathetic when it shoots. A silvery substance appeared in front of me and I kept on going straight and discovered that the silvery substance was water and that 2142's APC's cannot swim all in one go. Efficiency!
I respawned and tried another vehicle. This one is a tank, but it's a hover tank, and it hovered over the water no problem. A flying thing came and attacked me in me poor tank and I tried to shoot it, but this tank cannot even spell up, never mind shoot more than 15 degrees upwards. The fire rate is about the same as the old tanks.
I then discovered that pressing X does not realease chaff/smoke, instead, it activates the vehicle's shield. The shile lasts about 15 seconds though, so use it wisely.
So .. I finally get to a Silo currently held by enemy forces, and I get close to it, figuring it would be like the flag capture thing. It goes like this:
1 - Uplink to silo computer [10 seconds] [Must be bluetooth]
2 - Turn Silo Off : 15/20 seconds.
3 - Turn it on again, but now you own it : 15/20 seconds.
4 - Reprogram the Silo to shoot at their Titan instead of yours. 15/20 seconds.
Done. Phew.
Only 4 more Silo's to go.
I run towards the floating tank and die suddenly before I reach it. I'm like ... WTF ??? The "dead view" reveals a huge robot thing looking down on me and grinning. Oh .. the death view is no longer staring straight at the sky, a small plus.
So .. after respawning, the announcement that something has blown up on our Titan comes over the air. I didn't know you could spawn onto the Titan, so I endevoured to use a Pod to reach our Titan as was explained in the leading video. I got into and APC and right clicked. Nothing happened. I pressed F2, it changed position, right clicked ... Nothing Happened. Presses F3, it changed position, right clicked ... suddenly i'm flying through the air and there's a large ship thing right in front of me slightly to the right, I instinctiviely guide myself at it, and it approaches really fast and I aim for what looks like a flat surface and WHAM. Things happen, stuff seems to fall off and when the dust settles I'm standing in an area on our Titan. Well .. I fugured that it must be our Titan cos it's not really obvious. I then run around a bit on the Titan but cannot find a way to get inside. An announcement comes over the air saying something abut evacuate, which I ignore. Suddenly the damn thing explodes and the game is over.
The scores show and I have no idea what the scorecards are saying.
i.e. This is a lot different from BF2, it is not a reskinned BF2, well ... it is a reskinned BF2, but it is definately a different game. So much so that I think BF2 will survive for ages still.
More later .. still learning the ropes.
